There are dedicated staff from both the ECE and CSE Departments to oversee the whole program. The objective of the CPEG program is to provide students with a broad and well-integrated background in the concepts and methodologies needed for the analysis, design, implementation and utilization of computer systems. Such systems involve a far wider range of disciplines than mere computation, and the scope of the Computer Engineering program is correspondingly wide, and can lead to concentrations in the areas of Intelligent Robotic Systems, Networks and Communications, Multimedia Computing and Processing, VLSI and Computer Systems, and Speech Processing and Language Engineering. The Computer Engineering curriculum has been carefully designed such that it contains rich and coherent core/required courses, yet it is flexible enough to allow the students to gain a broad background, at the same time of having the opportunity to follow some concentrations or streams of study. The core and required courses can be grouped as: software fundamentals, hardware fundamentals, system fundamentals, mathematics fundamentals, business fundamentals, and general education fundamentals. In addition, all Computer Engineering students are required to undergo a formal industrial training program during their first and second years to gain practical exposure to key hardware and software skills that are in great need in industry. Computer Engineering students are privileged to have access to all of the hardware and software facilities of both ECE and CSE Departments, in addition to those provided by the University to all students. As a result, they have ample opportunities to use a very wide variety of state-of-the-art laboratories in both Departments. Bioengineering, the bridge between the basic life sciences and engineering, is broad in its spectrum, 165
4 SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING with its foundation in all of the engineering sciences as well as biology, medical, behavioral and health sciences. The Bioengineering (BIEN) Program, an initiative embarked by the School of Engineering, facilitates the close integration of biological, physical, and computational sciences, and engineering. The program offers postgraduate studies leading to the research-based degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The BIEN Program adopts a systematic and quantitative approach to the study of biological systems. It aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge to contribute to the biomedical industry as well as optimize existing bioprocesses, and develop new biotechnologies. The program will allow students to apply the tools of engineering, computer science, and physical sciences to their study of biological processes. Students enrolled in these programs are required to take three general core courses to equip themselves with general knowledge in Biology. In addition, students are required to take elective courses from four different streams, which will be developed in two stages. Initially, only three streams are offered: (1) Biological Information Engineering, (2) Bioprocessing and BioProduct Design, and (3) BioMEMS and Biomaterials. The fourth stream, Neuroengineeering, will be available in due course. Postgraduate Program and Research Stream 1 - Biological Information Engineering This stream addresses the application of information technology and process systems engineering. The area of Biological Information Engineering addresses the issues associated with new computational concepts and tools involved in bioinformatics but can also be extended to other relevant information based areas such as protein structure prediction, drug design, biodiversity, data mining and knowledge discovery in molecular databases, data interpretation, evolutionary biology and process systems engineering. Stream 2 Bioprocessing and BioProduct Design Bioprocessing is the application of chemical engineering principles to the design of biocatalysts, cells, reactors, separation systems and their integration by process systems engineering into an optimal bioprocess plant. In addition to technology aspects, engineers need to be aware of regulatory, safety and ethical issues in biotechnology. BioProduct design involves the systematic evolution of production processes using product characteristics to assist in a product oriented process design. Stream 3 BioMEMS and Biomaterials Biomaterials is the engineering study of the physical and biological properties of synthetic polymer, metal, ceramic and other materials, and their interaction with blood and soft and hard tissues. It aims to provide novel, reliable and safe new materials and devices for biomedical use. BioMEMS is the application of biological and bioanalytical methods to micro electrical and mechanical systems such as gene chips. 166
5 Stream 4 Neuroengineering Neuroengineering is both the application of engineering principles to solve problems in neuroscience, and the reverse: the application of insights from neuroscience to the design of engineering systems. The objective of this stream is to develop engineers who are equally comfortable with the biology of neural systems and modern engineering techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on areas of neuroscience that include processing of sensory information, neural computation, pattern generation and central control of movement; and on areas of engineering that include signal and image processing, neural networks, neuromorphic circuit design, sensors, actuators, and robotics.
