1 The Stuttgart Region is located at the heart of Europe - the world s secondlargest single market. It is the ideal starting point to serve the most important national and European markets. Key facts With a population of 2.7 million and per capita purchasing power of over 20,000, the Stuttgart region provides companies with an excellent market for their goods and services. 12 million people live within a 100 km radius of the Stuttgart Region, 21.5 million within a 200 km radius. By contrast, only 12 to 13 million people live within the same radius of Munich, Hamburg and Berlin. Over 1 million employed persons produce a gross domestic product of over 86 billion nearly 5% of Germany s economic output. Transport and communications infrastructure With around 8.8 million passengers and over 18,000 tons of freight, Stuttgart Airport is the sixth largest in Germany. The extensive motorway network provides fast links to all key population centres in Germany and the rest of Europe. Stuttgart is located on Europe s main east-west railway route, connecting Paris, Stuttgart, Munich, and Vienna, and it is linked to the high-speed rail network of Deutsche Bahn/German Rail Corporation. A Datex-M high-speed fibre-optic network provides the bandwidth required for multimedia communications, and connects the region with all major European and German economic centres. 1/8
