1 Engineering and You Photo Competition 1. INTRODUCTION Rules and Regulations Every day, thousands of engineering processes are carried out at different locations all over Hong Kong. These may involve design, manufacturing, construction or operation and maintenance activities. Pictures of these activities are often interesting and attractive to members of the engineering profession as well as the general public. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) cordially invites you to submit entries for the Engineering and You Photo Competition. Winning entries will be displayed at the Hong Kong Science Museum in March 2015 in an exhibition which will be open to the public. The objectives of the Photo Competition are: (a) to allow the community to understand more about the work and nature of the engineering profession; (b) to enhance appreciation of engineering activities in various trades and disciplines; (c) to highlight the engineering profession's values and contributions to the community; and (d) to demonstrate the entrants' appreciation of engineering and photographic skills. 2. ENTRANTS The Photo Competition is divided into two categories: (a) Public: (b) HKIE: Open to all members of the public Open to all HKIE members Participant can join both categories but he/she shall not submit the same photo for entries to both categories. 1

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Theme The theme of the photo competition is Engineering and You ( 工程與你 ) 3.2 Content of Entries Entries should demonstrate how engineering and engineers benefit the development of society and wellbeing for Hong Kong and its citizens. It should reflect the theme of the photo competition, Engineering and You, including but not limited to the following: (a) Good practices in engineering; (b) Construction and engineering safety; (c) Sweat and smile of engineering practitioners; (d) Marvelous of engineering works; (e) Eye-catching engineering operations; and (f) Any good shots related to engineering or construction professions. A proposed list of photo shooting locations is attached (Appendix I) for reference only. 3.3 Other Requirements (a) By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his/her own and permits the HKIE to reproduce all or part of the materials free of charge for exhibition and publication purposes, including website applications (e.g. Facebook). (b) Entries must be originals taken on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. Winning photo(s) from local / overseas open competition will not be accepted. (c) All entries must be taken in Hong Kong within the last 3 years, ie. from year 2012 to (d) Only simple touch-up after image capture is permitted, e.g. simple cropping, minor adjustments to brightness, contrast, colour balance, etc. (e) Composite or synthesized photos are not accepted. (f) Winners will be required to submit high-resolution soft copies, slides or negatives of the photos for enlargement and display in future exhibitions. 2

3 4. SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES 4.1 Format of Entries (a) Entries can be in either colour or monochrome (B&W) prints. All entries shall be submitted in the form of BOTH: i. Hard copies (at least 8 x 8 inches/200mm x 200mm (8S) not exceeding 12 x 15 inches/300mm x 375mm (12R). Lamination or mounting is not required; and ii. Soft copies in a CD with files in JPEG format (soft copies will be for web publishing purposes); (b) The maximum number of entries to be submitted by each individual is four (4). 4.2 Information Required Please fill in the Entry Form and provide the following information using the template attached in Word format: (a) The title of the entry (in either English or Chinese); (b) Date and location of where the photo was taken; (c) A description of not more than 70 words about the photo. 4.3 Submission Method (a) All entries should be submitted by post or by hand to the HKIE Headquarters at 9/F Island Beverley, No. 1 Great George Street, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong; (b) Please clearly mark the wording Engineering and You Photo Competition on the envelop/packing materials for easy identification; (c) No entry fee is required; (d) The deadline for entries is 5:00pm on Tuesday, 24 February Late submissions will not be shown to the judging panel; (e) An acknowledgement will be sent to the entrant upon receipt of the entries. If no acknowledgement is received within 5 working days, please contact the organiser for follow-up. 3

4 5. JUDGING 5.1 Panel of Judges The judging panel will comprise four independent photographers. The judges are: Ir WONG Wai Man Raymond, Convenor Ir LAU To Koon Kenneth Ir LO Tin Hoi Ir Prof NG Tung Sang 5.2 Judging Criteria Entries will be judged based on the following: (a) The degree to which the photos are able to illustrate the theme Engineering and You ; (b) Artistic merit; and (c) Description of photos. The decisions of the judging panel shall be final. No appeal mechanism will be provided. 6. AWARDS Public Category: One Gold Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$ 10,000. One Silver Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$ 7,000. One Bronze Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$ 5,000. Ten Merit Awards: Each with a Certificate and a cash prize of HK$ 1,000. HKIE Category (Entrants should be HKIE members): One Gold Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$ 10,000. One Silver Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$ 7,000. One Bronze Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$ 5,000. Ten Merit Awards: Each with a Certificate and a cash prize of HK$ 1,000. 4

5 Each entrant may only win one of the Gold, Silver or Bronze Award, but there are no restrictions on the number of Merit Awards any entrant may win. An Award Presentation Ceremony will be held no later than March All winning photos from both categories will be covered in HKIE's journal, Hong Kong Engineer. 7.
