2 Spend 3 Weeks In China This Summer! Brock s Teach and Travel program combines the additional qualification course Teaching English Language Learners (formerly ESL) AQ with the opportunity to spend 3 weeks in China with your instructor and fellow participants. 3 Where? When? Cost? *Cities in China: in 2016 Shanghai, Kunshan, Beijing Dates: (based on last year s schedule) * Depart July 1 st and return July 23 rd OR depart July 7 th and return July 31 st $2000 Total Cost: includes course, flight, accommodation, meals, ground transportation to and from airport, some local touring Note that only the China portion of the fee ($1295) is payable by the end of February at ticket booking. The course cost is payable just before departure since the course itself is classified as a summer course and your course payment will be made accordingly. Numbers of participants are set by the schools in China. The usual number in a location is between 10 and 20. NOTE: Exact locations are at the discretion of our Chinese hosts.

5 Are YOU prepared to teach in a multicultural, multilingual classroom?

6 Ontario s Demographic Reality Your future classroom will most certainly include newcomers. Most southern Ontario ELLs come to the Toronto/Niagara corridor.

7 Who Should Take the Course? Preservice grads or current teachers who want: an intensive, hands-on PD experience that will prepare you to teach in the classroom of the future where your students will undoubtedly include newcomers whose first language is not English. an ESL qualification to broaden teaching opportunities at home and abroad. an exotic travel opportunity!

8 Is this course different from the same course delivered in Canada? The course expectations are the same for all Faculties of Education. The main difference is that the culminating assignment is built around the teaching practicum in China.

9 What Qualities are Necessary for Participants? Team player! Participants live and work very closely together in China. Flexibility: Living and working in a very different culture requires extreme flexibility and adaptability. Positive Outlook: It is essential that participants be supportive of each other and eager to gain from this unique experience. Good General Health: Teaching and traveling in Asia requires energy and some tolerance for heat and humidity. Appreciation of Diverse Cultures: Cultural norms are different in China and we are guests.

10 The Realities of Teaching in China The teaching arrangements, hotels and food are organized by the Chinese education officials. The schools and the ages and grades of the students who participate are sometimes subject to change depending on local circumstances, so we don t always have exact information until close to departure. This is a summer program for them and they recruit and organize in June. The level of hygiene may sometimes not meet western expectations, especially in washrooms and public places; e.g smoking in public places is acceptable. The food, as in any foreign country, may not always agree with your western tastes; our hosts are not expected to accommodate for special diets.

11 The Realities of Teaching in China... cont d Last minute changes in teaching assignment in terms of age group or exact school are sometimes possible due to fluctuating numbers of students, since students are signing up for the program up until our arrival. Communication may be difficult you are the minority! Not all schools are air-conditioned to western standards. Shared accommodation is the norm for the program. It is up to you to select a compatible roommate from among your team members single accommodation may be available at a surcharge.

12 Responsibility of the Participant Your commitment in China involves 3 weeks of teaching which you are expected to fulfill. Brock enters into a contract with our Chinese hosts who will make all arrangements regarding your stay. Cost to participants is subsidized by China and based on each participant having taught a full program. Any additional cost incurred by failure to complete the teaching (eg. medical emergency at home, cancellation after flights are booked) are borne by the participants themselves.

13 Responsibility of the Participant... cont d Every participant must arrange for, and provide proof of, out-of-country medical coverage and be aware of the terms of its use. Every participant must have a current passport with at least 6 months validity remaining in order to obtain a visa to enter China. A scan of the first page of the passport must be submitted with the initial application.

14 Course Components Pre-departure meeting with teaching team and instructor, date TBA last year it was Saturday, June 4 th. Online course modules May/June: This is your chance to complete some of the course readings and meet your teaching team and instructor online to begin planning for your teaching and travel. It is not a heavy load. Practicum in China * 3 weeks in July, Monday Friday, 5 hours teaching per day. Each participant has his/her own class with a Chinese bilingual teacher in class to assist.

15 Practicum Overview Each teacher has his/her own class of elementary or middle school (usually Gr 1 - Grade 9) students to teach for 5 hr per day in China with breaks and lunch. Last year 3 experienced teachers in our group taught Chinese teachers. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided at the school, hotel, or local restaurants. 5 days per week are teaching days followed by 2 free days for free time and local tours; one tour day per weekend is hosted for us at no cost and one free day remains for you to enjoy. 16 Cost and Ticket Booking Cost $2000 with payment of $1295 processed at ticket booking. Flight must be booked early, (usually by the end of February), when ticket prices are within our budget and seats are available. We fly direct Air Canada. Course cost $685 + $20 material fee due at course registration or before departure. NOTE: Once travel cost is paid, a ticket is booked and issued in your name and is non-refundable except through the process defined by the travel agency. When a ticket is booked, arrangements and permissions are booked in China in your name. The program is heavily subsidized by our Chinese hosts who expect you to follow through with the teaching program.

17 Extra costs Summer Chinese Visa extra: arranged for you after ticket booking. Spending Money for souvenirs, personal items, drinks, and the odd meal or individual local travel on free days when you are out and about on your own. Out of country health insurance arranged by each participant. Immunizations as deemed necessary by each individual participant. Fees include accommodations, flight, meals, ground transportation to and from airport, transportation to and from the school, and some local touring and cultural events depending on location and availability.

18 Steps to Register Fill in Application Form and send to or Passport: Make sure you have 6 months remaining, from completion of program date (end of July). Include a scan or cell phone picture of the first page of the passport with the passport number clearly visible. 19 Next Steps Once your application has been received, Cheryl will connect you with the Brock University/China coordinator who will work with you directly to arrange flights and Chinese visas. Pay as directed, travel cost plus any additional cost for individual extended travel and at that point your spot is confirmed. If you fail to follow through in a timely manner, you will be placed on the wait list. Course cost of $685 plus $20 material fee is due when registration opens for summer courses, or by departure. Your spot is NOT CONFIRMED until payment has been made and all paperwork is complete. NOTE: Cheryl will continue to connect with you by until Sakai is open. At that point, all updates will be posted in Sakai and communication among teaching teams will begin.

20 Extended Travel If you wish to extend your stay at your own expense at the end of the program, you must indicate your flight return date at the time of travel payment. Return flights to Canada are the most difficult to nail down, since many international students return to Canada in August and seats are limited. If you are intending to travel outside of China before your return to Canada, please indicate this before booking, as you may require a multiple entry visa. You are responsible for any extra fee involved in extending your ticket, which the travel agent will indicate to you before booking. If family members or friends are joining you, they may do so at the conclusion of the program. Persons outside of our group are not allowed on site during the program. Our travel coordinator may be able to arrange their flights as a courtesy. All participants are expected to travel with and arrive with the group.
