1 Dawsonera v5 Online Reader - Frequently Asked Questions 1. How does searching work in the new reader? In summary the reader search works by using what is called 'stemming'. This works by taking the stem of the word being searched for and then bringing back the results related to that stem. It is a highly effective and user friendly search format and is used by Google. An example of this would be when you search within a book and put in reformed it will also return reform reformation. As the stem here would be reform. 2. Which browsers can I use and what browsers do you recommend? We support the major browsers and have specifically tested the new online reader using the following browsers and therefore would recommend these in particular: Chrome IE 7,8,9,10,11 Safari 7.x Safari 8 (for critical areas) Firefox How do I share notes? It is important to firstly note that you can only share notes with other users within your institution. When you have notes created in the online reader, in the left hand panel you click on the Notes tab and then click Share

2 When you click Share you will be presented with a popup box containing a code. Simply copy the code and then share or send it to a colleague or friend in your institution and let them know the title of the ebook the notes are for. 4. How do I import notes that a user or lecturer has shared with me? When you have received a share code from a user and the name of the title, simply go into read online mode within the relevant ebook and click on the notes panel and then click on Import. A popup box will appear and prompt you to enter you code and click Import. When you do this, all the notes that your colleague or lecturer has shared with you, will be visible in the notes section. Some institutions have discussed embedding this share code within their reading list system.

3 5. Which screen readers are compatible with the new reader? The new online reader was tested with the latest version of JAWS using IE11 on a machine using Windows 7 and the latest NVDA screen reader using the latest Firefox browser on a machine using Windows 7 on a PC. We also used Voiceover to perform screen reading using the OS/X (Yosemite) operating system on a Mac and OS/X 10.9, as well as using Voiceover to perform screen reading using the IOS 8 operating system using an iphone, ipad Air and ipad Mini. 6. What accessibility guidelines has the reader been developed to? We are committed to ensuring everyone can access our reader. The new online reader is compliant with WCAG Draft 2.0 level AA accessibility guidelines and compliance with the Web Accessibility Initiative Accessible Rich Internet Application Suite. We continue to work with the RNIB to ensure that we receive their Surf Right accreditation for the entire platform and hope to receive this in the near future. These checkpoints are taken from the Website Accessibility Initiative (WAI) published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). 7. Do you have read aloud functionality? We have tested the read out loud screen reading using ios8 using and iphone/ipad,ipad Air and ipad Mini. In addition we have used Voiceover to perform screen reading OS/X (Yosemite) on a Mac and OS/X Using NVDA software will also allow the user to read the contents of the reader aloud.

4 8. How will the platform work on my different devices? Responsive web design is a design approach aimed at providing an optimum user experience across a broad range of devices and screen sizes. In the strictest sense of the term, designing responsively requires the design to fluidly adapt to the entire range of possible screen sizes. With the large range of screen resolutions and pixel densities in the tablet and mobile ecosystem the only way to effectively support them all is with a fluid approach. The tablet experience is very important to us and our clients because a quarter of students own one and use it for reading and research. We take a pragmatic approach to designing responsively. We choose to target the mobile and tablet sizes fluidly, but when it comes to desktop experience we often choose to use a fixed width as it benefits performance of long page content and helps deep-linking of content. 9. How many pages can I print or copy from a book? Each publisher allows a specific percentage that each user may print or copy from each ebook, that is why you might notice that these allowances vary from title to title. Each time you click copy or print you will notice that it tells you how many pages you have left to print or copy from. When you do copy or print, it will deduct one usage from your allocated allowance. We are constantly working with our publishing partners to try and obtain the best print/copy allowances for our users.

5 10. Why can t I print a range of pages on some pages? If you are in an ebook that has a table of contents or preceding pages that are numbered with roman numerals, these can only be printed a page at a time (eg. page v ix). Any numerical page number from p.1 upwards can be printed as a range. You can however print pages numbered in roman numerals in isolation but not as a range of pages. 11. What software do I need to have installed to download dawsonera ebooks? There are two types of ebook on dawsonera, namely: PDF and epub & they require different software to open them. Please see the information below to understand the differences. Please also note that other third party browser add-on s and plugins may affect how our ebooks are opened, so it best to ensure that both Adobe Reader/Adobe Digital Editions/Bluefire are set as default applications. PDF Download and required software You will then be presented with the following popup and your download will be initiated. If the download is a PDF you will need to have Adobe Reader installed on your desktop or device in order to read the PDF & this is clearly indicated to you. If you don t have Adobe Reader installed, simply click on the Get Adobe Acrobat Reader link and you will be able to download it from Adobe. 6 epub Download and the required software When you receive this popup, you are downloading an epub to a desktop and it will ask you to open the ebook in Adobe Digital Editions.
