1 Explain the difference between renewable and nonrenewable energy resources. (You may simply define them if you wish.) Renewable: Renewable energy resources are those that are easily replenished in short periods of time. Examples would include solar energy, geothermal energy, hydropower, wind power and biomass. Nonrenewable: Nonrenewable energy resources are those that are being used faster than they can be replenished. Example would include Uranium235 for nuclear fission, petroleum, coal and natural gas.

13 Explain the problem of the U.S. importing more than 50% of our oil from foreign countries. Challenges of us importing oil from foreign countries include the fact that they indirectly control our economy. They may cut us off from their oil, which will shut our economy down and send us into a recession (Oil Embargo of 1973). We are sending billions of dollars per year to countries that may not necessarily have our best interests in mind. We are sending billions of dollars per year out of our economy. Explain two solutions to the U.S. becoming independent from foreign oil. Develop more alternative fuels and/or vehicles such as bio-fuels and electric cars to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. We should use our resources wisely (conserve) to prolong their availability. We need to increase the fuel economy of our vehicles and use more mass transportation (buses, car pooling or trains)

17 Why is it important to discuss using energy resources wisely while working to develop resources other than fossil fuels? Explain your answer being sure to give examples. We need to discuss using energy resources wisely because we are running out of oil and natural gas. We need to develop other resources to prolong our use of fossil fuels. Bio-fuels, electric vehicles and mass transportation can help us extend our fossil fuel availability. We are able to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases by using fewer fossil fuels. The burning of fossil fuels contributes to SOx and NOx in the atmosphere, which leads to acid rain. Burning of fossil fuels also adds CO2 leading to global warming. Renewable energy sources generally have fewer negative impacts on the environment.
