2 International Congress of Religious Shrine Cities New directions in assessment of pilgrimage and religious tourism: Cooperation, Management and innovation Fátima, 10th- 12th of November 2016 Introduction In modern societies, human beings invest an important part of their time in leisure, travel and tourism activities, to rest, to contact with other people, cultures, new realities and even experiences that promote self-knowledge. The diversity of motivations for travel purposes is endless. This social phenomenon full of meanings is therefore on the rise. In this context, man has sought and continues to seek the holy places. The pilgrimage and religious tourism is known nowadays as a process of renewed momentum. The increase of these touristic flows and the diversity goals of the visitors, force the local host to seek new ways of management, cooperation and a constant demand to seek more creative ways to maintain and increase economic sustainability, that appears today as one of the few areas where the supply of goods and services generates wealth and creates jobs. The challenge for public and private decision-makers related to the sector is to ensure the constant and demanding pursuit of sustainable development Panels: Panel 1 - Attracting crowds vs. preservation of the sacredness of the place Panel 2 - Challenges and opportunities for host communities Panel 3 - Excellence and innovation in Pilgrimage and Religious Tourism Panel 4 - International cooperation and networking of Shrine cities Objectives: 1. Strengthen the project Shrines of Europe on the occasion of its 20 years of existence, in commemoration of the framework of the 100th anniversary of the Fatima Apparitions; 2. Sharing best practices implemented in these shrine cities regarding pilgrimage and religious tourism; 3. List new organizational constraints and management of these destinations; 4. Present solutions to overcome the common and specific problems detected; 5. Foresee future challenges which will arise to such destinations; 6. Compare the experiences of cooperation between the several actors (public and private, civil and religious) of each shrine city in local and regional development Pág. 2 de 5
3 Target Group: Mayors and other municipal technicians responsible for shrines and other church leaders, official tourism organizations, teachers, researchers, students, tourism technicians, tour operators and hoteliers, and all interested in the proposed themes.
