We would like to thank the members of our Subcommittee responsible for organizing this trip, César Ramos and Eugenio Pérez, for all of their hard work. We look forward to a series of productive meetings with leading IP organizations in Mexico. 2 American Intellectual Property Law Association Intellectual Property Practice Latin America Committee The IP Practice in Latin America Committee hosted an AIPLA delegation to Mexico City on June 5-7, 2013, with the purpose of increasing relationships of the AIPLA and the IP Practice in Latin America Committee with local authorities, intellectual property law associations and IP practitioners in Mexico. AIPLA President Jeffery Lewis and AIPLA Board Member Mike Martinez both joined the trip, as did the leadership of the IP Practice in Latin America Committee, including James Larson (Chair), Joaquim Goulart (Vice-Chair), and Robert Wells (incoming Vice-Chair). Joining them was six of the Committee s active members, including Jim Larson, Guillermo Lopez Davis, Rafael Beltran, Brian Batzli, Alex Menchaca, and Eugenio Torres. Eugenio Perez and Cesar Ramos graciously hosted the AIPLA delegation. Both active Mexican members of the IP Practice in Latin America Committee and the co-coordinators of the Organizing Committee, Eugenio and Cesar, were instrumental in scheduling the various visits and organizing the meetings during the trip. On the first day of the trip, June 5 th, the delegation met for an informal dinner, introductions and discussion of the agenda. On the second day, June 6 th, the delegation got an early start, leaving the hotel at 8:00am and heading directly to the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property ( IMPI ). The delegation enjoyed an outstanding reception at IMPI, which included a wonderful breakfast and the opportunity to meet many members of the IMPI, including its General Director, Mr. Miguel Margáin, and the General Director of the Copyright office, Mr. Manuel Guerra. Mr. Margáin gave a presentation on behalf of the Institute and treated the AIPLA delegation to a tour of the Institute s new facilities. After the visit to IMPI, the delegation participated in a seminar organized by the Mexican Association of Intellectual Property ( AMPPI ). Jeffery Lewis (President of the AIPLA), Eduardo Kleinberg (President of AMPPI), and Michael Lewis (First Secretary for IP, Regional IPR Attaché for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean of the USPTO stationed out of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City) officially opened the seminar. James Larson, Chair of the IP Practice in Latin America Committee, moderated the presentations. There were then four excellent speakers, Rodrigo Calderón Ponce and Alejandro Luna from AMPPI and Robert Wells and Alex Menchaca from the AIPLA delegation. The presentations covered the newly enacted and implemented AIA, as well as the Mexican provisions of patent linkage and prosecution. -2-

3 The seminar was extremely successful with more than 60 attendees from local Mexican IP firms. The speakers responded to scores of questions. The second day ended with a gala dinner offered to the AIPLA delegation by Olivares & Cia and Uhthoff, Gomez Vega & Uhthoff, S.C. (two IP specialized Mexican firms) at the Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de México overlooking the beautiful Plaza de Independencia. The third day started with a visit to the Federal Court of Fiscal and Administrative Affairs. At the Federal Court, the delegation had the chance to meet with the three Judges in charge of deciding industrial-property matters at the Mexican Federal Courts. The delegation toured the Federal Court s facilities and then participated in a roundtable, where the delegation members and the Mexican IP Judges discussed the Mexican legal system and the way it deals with IP matters. After the visit, the delegation attended to a lunch sponsored by AMPPI, where the members of the AIPLA delegation had an opportunity to talk more informally to many Mexican IP practitioners. That evening, the delegation enjoyed a farewell informal dinner, ending the trip to Mexico. The trip succeeded on various fronts. First, the number of AIPLA members who attended proved the growing interest of our committee members in the region. Second, the interest shown by Mexican authorities and local IP practitioners heightened their awareness of the AIPLA. And third, we strengthened the importance of the AIPLA in Mexico. The AIPLA s IP Practice in Latin America Committee extends it sincere appreciation to both Eugenio Peres and Cesar Ramos for organizing the visits and the social events of this trip. Without them, we could never have accomplished our goals with such success. -3-
