The house is a beautiful 1908 farmhouse with original features intact. The kitchen, however, was tiny, odd shaped and in disrepair. Design+Build Goals: 1. Maintain the kitchen footprint. Make it more functional and connect it to the rest of the house. 2. Marry new and old. The new kitchen enriches characteristic of the house without replicating the old. 3. Reuse, revitalize, and refurbish as much as possible. Demolish as little as possible. 4. Build sustainably. Use local material and artisans.

3 1 Instead of removing old pantry cabinets, we stripped out old paint at the wood face with non-toxic solution and re-painted interior of cabinets with low VOC paint. 2 Then we added new large sliding doors, made of Madrona frames with 3-Form recycled resin panels, to existing upper and lower cabinet. Slider hardware was made by a local blacksmith. 3 The rotten and shallow countertop was removed and replaced with a deeper reclaimed Madrona butcher block countertop to make a more functional work surface. 14 Opened the wall dividing the dining room and pantry, and installed reclaimed Madrona bar top. 13 Original door trims and headboard through out. 12 Installed salvaged old school chalkboard. We framed it with reclaimed Madrona to integrate it with kitchen cabinet. 4 Door location was moved to create a continuous working surface. We installed new locally manufactured glass door to let natural light in. 5 Installed Fireclay recycled ceramic tile backsplash at both kitchen and pantry area. 6 Spice shelf, is steel angle made by local steel fabricator. 11 Moved refrigerator into old pantry closet. Existing refrigerator is not old, so we keep, and it fits perfectly in the pantry space. 7 All lower cabinet consists of stainless steel appliances, and stainless steel shelf (built by local fabricator), with reclaimed Madrona butcher block countertop. 8 Energy star appliances 10 New kitchen cabinets made by Core Casework. All cabinetry is reclaimed Madrona veneer with FSC certified plywood core, and low toxic finishes. Some cabinet doors have 3-Form recycled resin panels (same as the sliding doors in pantry). All cabinet pulls are made of reclaimed Madrona scraps. 9 Owner stripped out vinyl floor and we cleaned old fir flooring underneath and painted fir flooring with low VOC paint. Floor is sealed with OSMO for protection. what is green about the kitchen
