2 Overview The Central Arizona Chapter of the Association for Women in Science [AWIS-CAZ], established in 1997, is housed at Arizona State University. Our membership includes men and women at all career stages within a STEM discipline. We are dedicated to providing support and inspiration for the advancement of women in science by building a community among women through networking, mentoring and continuing education. We host regular luncheons, workshops, outreach events and informal gatherings to provide members and non-members the opportunity to interact with other STEM professionals and to provide inspiration to future scientists. Sample Events Hosted by AWIS-CAZ Include Monthly seminars covering a wide range of topics [i.e. Outstanding Elevator Speeches, Networking, Careers outside of Academia]. Events and seminars specific to graduate and undergraduate student members [i.e. Research ethics, How to improve your presentation skills]. Host outreach events in collaboration with several companies, state universities and community colleges [i.e. Career Fairs, Internship Fairs]. Career enrichment events - K-12 students: Hands on Science Tour and Science Fair Judging - Graduate students and Postdocs Career training : Jump Starting STEM Careers - Undergraduate students: Career fair preparation and STEM Internship Seminars

3 JumpStarting STEM Careers Conference JumpStarting STEM Careers originated in 2011 as a collaboration between researchers at George Washington, Ottawa, and Gallaudet Universities. It was a multi-day workshop originally called FORWARD to Professorship and was developed to help early STEM professionals [specifically women, minorities and those with disabilities] learn skills to help them prepare for, acquire and become successful in a STEM career. Since 2013 this evolved into a half day, theme based symposium which is has been held annually at Arizona State University. This year JumpStarting STEM Careers will be organized as a one day conference. There will be four speaker panels covering the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The 4-5 member panels will be comprised of STEM professionals from well-known businesses such as Intel, Henkel, and NASA, as well as academia representatives, who will summarize their career accomplishments, how they got to where they are at now and then give mentoring advice on how to pursue a similar career. The final panel will include representatives from career services and various graduate programs that will provide information to students regarding career options. Lastly, there will also be an undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral student poster session including poster awards. [Individuals outside of the Phoenix metro area are also welcome to attend.] STEM professionals either beginning or establishing their career. Attendees are asked to register but there is no cost for the event. We do not provide parking or transportation for this event. Attendees who are not employees or students at ASU will be given visitor parking information.

6 Media Coverage Based on the demographics of most students, our main media outlet is through social media or website forums. We have active accounts on Twitter, Facebook, AWIS-CAZ.org, and AzSEF [special award categories] and the event will be streamed live and recorded for future viewing. Internet and Social Media AWIS Central Arizona Chapter Facebook page. This group page has announcements for upcoming events and fun historical facts about notable female scientists. Women-in-Science AWIS_CAZ and AWIS_CAZ_UG (undergraduate) Twitter accounts. Those who follow these twitter posts will see updates for upcoming events as well as news regarding women in STEM. or AWIS_CAZ Central Arizona AWIS chapter website. A general resource for members which provides information about upcoming events and links to sponsors. AWIS-CAZ.org Central Arizona AWIS chapter LinkedIn. A general resource for local members which provides information about upcoming events and STEM career discussions. The event will be streamed live at and recorded for future viewing. The event will be promoted on the ASU general and club event calendars. The event will be promoted through calendars listed at participating academic department websites.
