6 Biotic Components of Ecosystem Populations of the same species live in a given region or ecosystem Populations of a species vary in age, size, structure, and genetics depending on the ecosystem they live in Populations of a species never live in isolation They share resources with other organisms and species This forms a Community of all the organisms in a given ecosystem

7 Ecosystem Boundaries Ecosystems can have very distinct boundaries ie: Lake Ecosystem Ie: Island ecosystem Ecosysme boundaries can also be transitional or indistinctive Ie: the transition from a marine to coastal ecosystem

8 Diversity of Ecosystems Why is diversity important for organisms living in an Ecosystem? Diverse Ecosystem: many different kinds of organisms at each trophic level. Remove one species may affect one or more other species ability to survive Diverse ecosystems are more likely to survive changes Example: If a predator consumes four species of prey and one prey dies out the predator still has three prey to consume Example: If a predator consumes only one species of prey and that prey dies out then the predator will either also die out or be forced to move to another ecosystem
