We celebrated our 175 th anniversary by renovating our chapel and building a side chapel for quiet contemplation. One of our published values is: Spirituality The University celebrates its Christian foundation, and welcomes people of all faiths and none. Together, we aim to explore the mystery of life and to grow in wisdom and love. Chaplaincy has a key role to play in the outworking of the above value and the Dean of Chapel is responsible for serving the Christian identity and the Anglican traditions of the University, leading a Chaplaincy to meet the spiritual and personal needs of the whole University community, those of all faiths and those with no faith. In general terms, this will mean developing effective and imaginative ways to explore worship, fellowship and social action programmes. The Dean of Chapel will also have an academic role and contribute to the respect the University has for religious ways of knowing by offering some teaching and engaging in research. The Vice-Chancellor and the Board of Governors Foundation Committee oversee the Christian Foundation and how it is expressed throughout the University. On a day-to-day basis the post holder is accountable to the First Deputy Vice-Chancellor but also has direct access to the Vice Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors as appropriate. The Dean of Chapel will be an ordained priest in the Anglican Church and required to hold the Bishop of Winchester s Licence. The Dean of Chapel is assisted by a part-time ordained

2 chaplain (0.5fte) and a part-time lay assistant. Foundation Music provides a musical expression of the University s values and the various ensembles contribute to the life of the Chaplaincy, University and community. The Dean of Chapel will work closely with Student Services who provide a range of support services to students. In addition to the Chapel on King Alfred s Campus, the University has a Muslim Prayer Room and part of the Dean of Chapel s role is to develop an inter-faith dimension to the Chaplaincy. The Dean of Chapel will be expected to undertake some appropriate teaching in the Department of Theology and Religion and Philosophy and to engage in personal research. S/he will also be expected to lead and develop the King Alfred Award, an optional programme which encourages students to grow in wisdom and resilience. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership: To develop and implement a clear vision of Chaplaincy rooted in the University s Christian Foundation and in its inclusive and hospitable heart. To lead worship in accordance with the doctrine, rules and practices of the Church of England, suitable for the University community. Spiritual and pastoral care: To be proactive in establishing contact with students and staff, to provide spiritual and pastoral care and support for all members of the University, including those of other faiths and those of no faith. Academic: To undertake some teaching (up to 0.2fte) in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, to contribute to the University s Values Studies programme and to pursue an element of research. The King Alfred Award: To lead and to develop the King Alfred Award. Interfaith: To incorporate a dimension of inter-faith Chaplaincy. Internal engagement: To deepen the understanding and expression of how the Christian foundation underpins the University. This will involve membership of various University Committees and working groups. Engagement with ethical issues: To engage the institution in major issues such as Fair Trade, Sustainability, Climate Change and action following disasters, and in active participation in projects in the developing world. Policy development: To participate in policy development, particularly in respect of the Christian foundation and student and staff welfare. Internal links: To be involved in creating and sustaining links with student groups such as the Student Union, Christian Union and other faith groups and to work closely with staff and students on Foundation Music arrangements. Administration: To effectively coordinate, administer and publicise Chaplaincy.

3 External links: To build appropriate links with the Diocese, Cathedral and local church and faith communities. Good higher education practice: To liaise with other Chaplains in HE to discern good practice and implement as appropriate within the University. Other duties: such other duties as may be expected by the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor or the Vice-Chancellor. It is anticipated that this job description will change over time in accordance with the needs of the role. The role holder will be fully consulted on any proposed amendments. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The appointment will be made at Grade 7, currently 33,574 to 35,609 per annum and annual incremental progression within this range. An upper range of 36,672 to 37,768 per annum, will be available (again with incremental progression) to those who, having gained considerable experience relevant to the role, are able to demonstrate added value through activities or contribution which are over and above the normal expectations for the role. Starting salary will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. Salary is paid monthly in arrears by direct credit transfer on the last working day of each month. Accommodation will be provided. If the successful candidate already has accommodation in the local area, the University will provide a housing allowance in lieu of accommodation. Your normal centre of duty will be the King Alfred Campus in Winchester. However, you may be required to work in any part or department of the University, or as otherwise required for the due performance of your duties and responsibilities. Normal hours of work will be 37 per week, to be worked by agreement with your Line Manager. The appointment will, in an appropriate case, be subject to a probationary period of 6 months. The annual leave year runs from 1 August to 31 July. Holiday entitlement is 24 days per annum, plus Bank holidays and two extra statutory days. A proportion of the entitlement is allowed pro rata for part-time staff working less than five days per week and/or not throughout the year, and for all support staff during first leave year at the University. Holiday entitlement is increased by five days on completing five years service prior to the commencement of a leave year on 1 April. Other terms and conditions of employment appropriate to this post and grade apply in addition to those referred to in this statement. Facilities Staff catering facilities are available. West Downs Day Nursery - is situated within the grounds of The University of Winchester. The nursery offers care for children from the age of six weeks to five years in a stimulating and homely environment. The nursery provides 62 places each day from 7.30am to 6.15pm on a full time or sessional basis. The opening times are designed to accommodate the working parent who may wish to continue their career. Further details are available from the Human Resources Department. Sports facilities are available, e.g. gym, squash, badminton, cricket, indoor soccer, tennis, etc and staff organise their own sporting activities.
