3 What is a School Sport Apprentice? A School Sport Apprentice is an exciting opportunity for students interested in a career in sports coaching, sports development, sports management, physical education or teaching. School Sport Apprentices can have a large and positive impact on the delivery and development of school sport, physical activity and PE. A demonstration of how much impact apprentices can have in schools is seen through the numerous apprentices who have been employed at their school once they have completed their apprenticeship. More information can be seen on the School Sport Apprentices website where you can also see case studies from our schools and apprentices. Here is a quick summary of the main information. Apprentices will work full time (minimum of 30 hours) in primary schools, with the aim of supporting the school in the following areas: The delivery of high quality school sport and coaching, including whole school events and initiatives To help develop and deliver a high quality out of school hours programme for sport and physical activity (focussed on increasing participation) Support the co-ordination and delivery of competitive sport opportunities To support and develop PE and school sport so that all young people feel confident about taking part in physical activity and improve young people s personal qualities that affect their attitudes to school and learning. The apprentices will have an intense summer training scheme but it is important to note that the apprentices are not trainee teachers. The aim is to have the apprentices delivering aspects of curriculum PE as well as afterschool/lunchtime clubs; however the development and timing of this is decided on an individual basis in regards to their personal development. Experience and ability levels of the apprentices are varied. A high majority of apprentices will not have qualifications that allow them to lead sessions by themselves. Schools play a crucial role in supporting the apprentice to be able to develop and progress to leading sessions. Apprentices will be qualified to lead sessions by themselves once they have passed relevant qualifications such as the Level 3 Higher Sports Leadership qualification or an NGB level 2 coaching certificate.

4 Key Information We aim to appoint apprentices who are 18 years of age, although legally the course is open to learners aged 16 plus and we will appoint appropriately experienced and skilled learners. All learners will: Have previously completed a sports education qualification at Level 2 or above (GCSE PE / L2 BTEC in Sport) Have an enhanced DBS check Have completed an intensive training scheme (see below) Receive various resource packs to use in schools Receive constantly developing resources to help the sustainability of the apprentices learning and development in schools Complete a development programme that aims for the apprentices to assist and deliver curriculum and after school/lunchtime sessions Training Apprentices will be studying the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of PE and School Sport. An intensive summer training scheme aims to give the apprentices a good level of skills, knowledge and understanding ready to start working in schools. The training will be followed by ongoing mentoring, assessment and CPD. The training programme will include knowledge, understanding and application of the following areas: Safeguarding First aid Basketball Level 1 coaching qualification Health and Safety Equality and Diversity National Curriculum requirements Class management Leadership skills and initiatives Curriculum PE and school sport

5 NVQ teaching and Apprentice CPD To ensure a valuable CPD experience the college will organise specific training and support days throughout the year at college. As the apprentices have only 20 days contracted holiday the training days will take place during the school holidays. However, it is possible that some support days or CPD opportunities arise during school time and if this does happen these dates will be made clear to schools in advance to prevent any problems that may occur. Support days will be focussed on: NVQ teaching and support work Reviewing and assessing progress Reflecting on practice Sharing ideas Introduction to new innovative ideas to implement back in the schools Expectations of the schools It is important that the apprentices have a named member of school staff to act as a mentor. This mentor will be responsible for making them feel welcome in their new school, make introductions to staff and students and provide them with the necessary knowledge and advice needed for an effective placement. The mentor position has proven to be a crucial role in the success of an apprenticeship placement. The mentor needs to be a person that has a lead in the delivery of sport and physical activity and also the time and desire to help the apprentice on a day to day basis. The mentor will need to ensure that the following are achieved: Work place induction Oversee the apprentice s job role within the school Weekly target reviews this forms part of the NVQ folder of evidence and requires a 20 minute weekly meeting Completion of the supervisors section within every progress review (every 6 / 7) Support the apprentice with involvement in the delivery of after school / lunchtime clubs and physical activity provision Informal day-to-day support for personal development and completion of daily tasks Assistance with NVQ coursework tasks and projects To report and liaise with their tutors regarding any issues that may arise during the apprenticeship

6 All schools will receive additional mentoring support through document resources and additional events. The Mentor Guide will have all the specific details for mentors regarding NVQ deadlines and work documents, as well as supporting material to help mentor the apprentice. It is expected that the schools will provide the apprentice with the same level of respect and support they would for any of their members of staff. It is important that the apprentice builds good working relationships with school staff and pupils that is equivalent to any other members of staff. To aid the apprentice s classroom management and ability to control groups, they will need to be given a similar level of authority, so that the pupils show them the same respect as they would their usual teacher. Expectations of the college The College will provide the apprentices with the training, guidance and knowledge to coach sport in schools to the highest possible standard. The summer training programme will give the apprentices the opportunity to have a running start, with an intense learning programme and practical experience working with children in a sporting environment. Main duties: To supply schools with the required information ready to start in September, and support the schools with induction process Supply schools and mentors with the necessary resources and overall support to successfully deliver the programme To efficiently deliver the NVQ, completing progress reviews with apprentices to be carried out at schools or over the phone Apprenticeship tutors to visit schools throughout the academic year to support both the apprentice and the school (formal and informal visits/observations of apprentice coaching) To establish and maintain effective communication with schools To deliver CPD events and training days throughout the year for useful reflection and development

7 Recruitment All the necessary partnership paperwork between the school, College and IMPACT Apprenticeships is completed as soon as all parties are happy with the terms of agreement. The initial recruitment is then carried out by IMPACT Apprenticeships. Applicants will complete an initial screening process, followed by telephone interview and face to face interviews to ensure entry requirements are met and then be signposted to schools for interview. Employment IMPACT Apprenticeships will provide a full recruitment and HR support service to you and your apprentices whilst on this programme. IMPACT Apprenticeships will legally employ your apprentice and place them with you a host employer. After completing the year as a School Sport Apprentice, students can then go on to degree level education (with the appropriate level of learning pre-apprenticeship) and then on to teacher training. With the experience and qualifications gained during the apprenticeship it sits as an excellent precursor to teacher training, enriching their experience in PE and school sport enabling them to be more confident teachers in regards to curriculum PE delivery.
