The last few weeks have been quite busy with a great deal of fun and exciting school events. Since beginning my career in education, I have always enjoyed these last few months as we bear witness to the culmination of so many of the activities that the students have invested so much of their time and energy. It is in these months that we celebrate their many successes. We cannot thank you all enough for the kind words and sense of family that has helped everyone to persevere and get to where we are today. I look forward to these next few weeks as the faculty and staff guide students as they continue to work hard in their studies, and we as a school community take every opportunity to continue to foster the memories that will last a lifetime. Students learn to connect to themselves, each other and their community guided by two of our faculty, Ms. Ady Kayrouz and Ms. Deidre Murphy. Students work on balance, flexibility and strength and their application in life and academia.

3 Cinco de Mayo - Spanish trip P A G E 3 Students indulged first hand into the Spanish culture. There is no better lesson we can provide than to give them this chance to sample authentic Mexican food and to provide them the opportunity to speak Spanish in a real world setting. 4 P A G E 4 Gorton Honors Night ~ 2013 On May 16th, 2013, Gorton s faculty, students and parents came together to honor students who have proven themselves academically throughout their time at Gorton. We would like to thank Dr. D Agostino, Ms. Karen Bacchus, City Councilman Edgar Ladouceur, and Councilwoman Donna Travis for joining our celebration of our academic scholars achievements.

6 P A G E 6 7C in New York City On May 9th, the Seven Seas Team visited New York City. Students went to the Museum of Jewish Heritage, took a harbor tour to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and visited the 9-11 Memorial. Despite a rainy bus ride in, the weather was great in the city and the students were able to enjoy a fantastic trip! Way to go Raiders!!!

7 7B in New York City P A G E On May 10th, Team Bumble Bee went to New York City to visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum! The weather was gorgeous, the city was "buzzing" and the kids enjoyed a trip that they won't soon forget!

8 Anti-Bullying Walk 2013 P A G E 8 Thank you to Stop & Shop for supporting Gorton s 3rd annual Walk Against Bullying. It was as usual, a great experience, but especially since Representative Frank Ferri was able to join us this year. Over 400 students and teachers participated. We were all behaved like mature students. It makes us feel good to do something for such a great cause and have our school come together like that because it does show what a great community we are. We had another successful year of Gorton s Anti-Bullying Walk. Victoria G. & Daria M.

10 J E F F Washington D.C. Trip 2013 P A G E 10 Some of our 8th graders made their three day trip to Washington DC with many discoveries. They went on walks to Mount Vernon, the White House, the National Zoo, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Newseum and the Holocaust Museum.

11 NELMS Scholar Leader Award Winners P A G E 11 Tuesday, May 14th, Gorton s own Will Hindinger and Julia French were honored at a banquet at the West Valley Inn by the New England League of Middle Schools along with other RI scholars. Nominated students distinguished themselves in terms of outstanding citizenship, scholarship & leadership. Cyclones visit URI The honors students from the Cyclones went to URI on Friday, May 9th, for a lab demonstration of genetics and DNA extraction. They walked to the URI Den where the students experienced college cafeteria food. Then they visited two Genome Sequencing labs on the campus.

12 J E F F Student/Faculty Basketball Game P A G E 12 Friday, May 17th, Gorton s teachers played the winning team of students from our annual Basketball Tournament. All proceeds from ticket sales and refreshments go to St. Jude's. Hope to see you all there. Last year, Gorton Jr. High School raised $1200 for St. Jude s Children Hospital. This year, Gorton s students and faculty raised another $1200 to support this organization.
