1 BURLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL COURSE EXPECTATIONS Course Name: Latin I Teacher: Noralee Cartier Contact Information: (phone) ncartier@bsdvt.org ( ) Call Back Room: B209 Course Description: Latin I exposes students to the language, culture and history of the Romans. An introduction to the language through the Cambridge Series emphasizes comprehension of the Latin language by reading it and thus understanding the social and political history of the Romans, especially during the first century AD. The result of the student s study of Latin is improved knowledge of both English vocabulary and grammar, an expanded understanding of the relationship of the ancient world to his or her own, and appreciation of other foreign languages and culture. Connections to State and School Learning Standards: Standards (Goals and Objectives) Communication: Students read, understand, and interpret Latin. They use orally, listen to, and write Latin as part of the language learning process. Cultures: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the perspectives of Roman culture as revealed in the product of the Romans. Connections: Students will reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the study of a classical language. They will expand their knowledge through the reading of Latin and the study of ancient culture. Comparisons: Students will recognize and use elements of the Latin language to increase knowledge of their own language. They will compare and contrast their own culture with that of the Greco-Roman world. Communities: Students will use their knowledge of Latin in a multilingual world. They will use their knowledge of Greco-Roman culture in a world of diverse cultures. Content (Syllabus including essential knowledge and skills) Communication Content: Includes some combination of the following: family, home, school, daily life, food, entertainment (theatre, gladiatorial shows, the baths), religion (mythology, funerary customs), politics and government, slaves and freedmen; (beyond self) geography of the ancient world, professions, the Roman soldier, history, numbers, transportation and travel, medicine and science Skills Grammar: four conjugations of regular verbs, essential irregular verbs (esse, posse, velle, ire); subject/verb agreement, gender, number and case

2 Culture Content: family, home, school and daily life, food, entertainment, (theatre, gladiatorial shows, the baths); religion (mythology and funerary customs), politics and government, slaves and freedmen, clothing. Geography of the ancient world, the city in the ancient world as revealed by Pompeii, Alexandria, Rome, and sites in Roman Britain, monuments, history, art, literature, inscription, images and symbols, medicine and science Essential Skills: Grammar: application of grammar skills listed under communication Vocabulary: content/context vocabulary; reading strategies, map reading skills Connections Content: language, government and politics, social sciences and history, science and technology, Roman numerals and vocabulary associated with counting. Essential skills : vocabulary related to specific fields of study; reading strategies; names of ancient geographical locations; knowledge of the Roman Comparisons Content: prefixes, suffixes, phrases, mottoes, abbreviations, derivatives and cognates; structural patterns of the target language; architecture, mythology, art and literature, Essential skills: reading and observation skills; Latin and English etymology; grammatical structures Community Content: technology, media, cultural events Essential skills: Internet skills, writing skills, conversation skills, reading skills Typical Day and Classroom Routines: A typical day in the Latin I classroom will focus on learning about the language and culture of the Romans through a variety of learning opportunities. These will include beginning each day with a Latin phrase, grammar and cultural explanations, slide presentations of Pompeii and Herculaneum, videos/dvds related to Roman culture, pair and group work, translations, listening and oral practice, research for projects using library resources and the Internet, studying English derivatives from Latin words, games that enhance learning and vocabulary acquisition.

3 Class Rules and Expectations: Students may not eat during class, but may have a drink if they wish. Students should wear attire appropriate to a classroom. Students may not listen to electronic devices during class. Students are responsible for their own area in the classroom, both keeping it clean and disposing of trash. Students should try to use the bathroom before class. If a student needs to go during class, they should obtain a pass from me. Students should always do their own work! What is considered cheating and its consequences are outlined in the BHS Academic Honesty Policy. Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to be on time!!!!!. Students who arrive late are required to stop at the Grade Office to pick up a note. Students are expected to be prepared for class. This means attending class with their notebook, text book, writing utensil and homework assignments completed. Students are expected to participate in class. This means listening carefully, taking notes when required, and working with other students in groups or pairs. Students should cover their books and please do not stuff papers in them as it breaks the binding. ( A lost or damaged book is the student s responsibility.) Students should show RESPECT for other people in the class at all times. Disruptive, rude and inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. Students should show RESPECT for the teacher and not be so rude as to carry on private conversations while she is speaking. If you have questions, raise your hand. Materials Required for Class: Students will need a notebook that can be divided into four sections: Latin phrases, grammar, culture and translations. Students will also need a folder to keep handouts and homework organized. What might be best is a three-ring binder into which papers can be inserted. Assignments, Projects, and Homework: Homework: There will be approximately 20 minutes of homework a night. This may include translation, grammatical exercises, studying for test and quizzes or work on projects and papers. Participation: It is essential that all students participate fully in class. Participation includes listening carefully and taking notes when required, working with other students in groups or pairs, having necessary materials for class and having homework assignments completed.

4 Quizzes: There will be vocabulary quizzes on each Stage in the text, on grammar points and I, Claudius Tests: Tests will be given on grammar points and sometimes on the completion of a unit. Papers/Projects: There will be a map project the first quarter and a paper, project and presentation on some aspect of Roman culture to be chosen by the student third quarter. Absences and Make-Up Work: Students should make up missed assignments promptly. This is the student s responsibility. If they are out, they should come to see me the next day they are in school and not wait until the class meets again. If a student knows he or she will be absent, they can see me beforehand for assignments. Grading: Grades for the course is as follows: Homework and Participation: 40% Any homework assignment that is turned in late will lose 20 points. Quizzes 20% Tests 30% Projects 10% Students may check with me at any time concerning their grade and to find out about missed assignments. Progress Reports come out about the middle of each quarter. Extra Help and Call Back: Students may see me for extra help and make up work by appointment or at Call Back in B209 from 2:55-3:25 daily. Latin Club All Latin students are automatically a member of Latin Club with the option to select activities. These include Latin Day held at the University of Vermont (usually in March or April), contests, scholarships and travel opportunities. The National Latin Exam is given every year in March at the cost of $4.00 and students are encouraged to take it. It tests their knowledge of grammar, culture and reading comprehension at their level of Latin. The Latin Club goes to Greece and Italy every other year. The next trip is scheduled for April Students hoping to travel need to be in good standing at BHS and will be evaluated for such characteristics as maturity, flexibility, and cooperativeness.
