Focus is on ancient civilizations and the cultural heritage stemming from them. Primary sources (in translation) are emphasized (UCF Undergraduate Catalog, p.471). Course Outcome Objectives By the end of the course, students should be able 1. To identify and briefly describe the major contributions of the world s cultures: their history, worldview, practices. 2. To relate a basic understanding of the interaction among cultures through migration, conquest, and dialogue. 3. To locate ideological vestiges and concrete examples of the contributions from ancient cultures in contemporary societies. 4. To integrate the material drawn from this course into the student s own academic discipline. Required Texts 1. Gloria K. Fiero, The Humanistic Tradition Volumes 1-3, 6 th Ed. (New York: McGraw- Hill, 2011). 2. Other required and supplemental readings are provided on Canvas. POLICIES A. Attendance and Class Participation Attendance at class meetings is compulsory. Every student should be present in class, prepared to begin promptly at the start time. Late arrival disrupts the flow of class. Please turn off cell phones & music devices as you enter class. Laptops and recording devices are permitted in class for appropriate use.

2 To facilitate active and informed class participation, assigned readings should be completed before coming to class. If an absence is unavoidable, please inform the instructor by . The student should also find out what she or he missed in class lectures and discussions. B. Course Assessments 1. Two Objective Tests (50% Total; 25% Each) There are two tests to evaluate student progress. Each test consists of objective questions (i.e., matching & multiple choice). Tests will be administered in class and are subject to time constraints. A make-up test is possible only for a serious emergent reason. Please consult Course Schedule for dates. 2. Six Online Reading Comprehension Quizzes (30% Total; 5% Each) The course texts are very important because they supply interpretive content to the material we will discuss in class. There are six short quizzes to check to assess reading comprehension. These quizzes are scheduled before we begin the new material of a particular culture. Quizzes will be administered on Canvas and subject to time constraints. It will not be possible to make up the quiz. 3. Short Written/Research Essay (20%) The short essays demonstrate the student s ability to analyze a contemporary cultural, political, or religious issue in light of the study of ancient peoples and ideas. The student will submit a 1000-word essay toward the end of the semester. Further details on essay format and submission guidelines will follow. Please consult Course Schedule for due dates. C. Academic Integrity Academic integrity is at the center of the educational experience at the University of Central Florida. Students are expected to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity, neither engaging in nor tolerating academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, fabrication, cheating, or plagiarism. Any violation of academic integrity will be investigated and, where warranted, the student will receive appropriate sanctions through the University s Student Conduct Process. Adherence to the Student Conduct Policy and Academic Integrity Policy will help to ensure that learning and living experiences are founded on integrity. Please familiarize yourself with these policies. D. Grading For the essay, scoring rubric will be available on Canvas. For reporting of final grades, the following grading system will be used. A = B = C = D = A- = B- = C- = D- = B+ = C+ = D+ = F = below 70

3 E. Canvas Some students may be using Canvas for the first time. It is a very user-friendly online learning management system. The instructor uses Canvas primarily for document storage (power points, course syllabus, and scoring rubrics), grading, and timely communications. F.
