Access to feedback on the selection process is available. WORKING IN THE DIOCESE OF CAIRNS The Catholic school system is an integral part of the Church. The Catholic Diocese of Cairns extends from Cardwell in the south, west to the Northern Territory border including the Atherton Tablelands, and north to gulf country, Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Straight Islands. With the exception of Catholic Education s Thursday Island school, all schools and colleges are within two hours driving time from Cairns. Catholic Education Services is the Diocesan education office. Leadership and strategic management of the system of schools is the responsibility of the Executive Director of Catholic Education Services, who is the employer of all Catholic Education staff in the Diocese. CATHOLIC EDUCATION SERVICES Catholic Education Services within the Diocese of Cairns comprises a group of twenty six schools, all owned by the Diocese of Cairns or its parishes. There are nineteen primary schools, one P 12 college and six secondary colleges. Leadership and strategic management of the system of schools is the responsibility of the Director of Catholic Education. Through a team of professionals the Director manages and facilitates a number of significant obligations which include: Support of the mission of the Church as delivered through Catholic education. Support of schools by providing services that strengthen school capacity. Provision of leadership and forward planning to develop organisational capability. Distribution to schools of government allocated funds and their accountability. Monitoring of quality of schools and compliance/accountability with requirements of governments, Church and parents. Within limits, provision of some centralised, specialised student services, where this is the most effective and efficient approach. 2. ROLE OF ADVISORY VISITING TEACHER: DISABILITY The role and responsibilities of the Advisory Visiting Teacher Disability is to develop capacity within schools to cater for the diversity of learners within the school population with a particular emphasis on Students with a Disability. This involves promoting contemporary principles of effective learning and teaching, relevant syllabi, curriculum policies, work programs and educational trends for effective inclusion The role requires developing the skills and practice of classroom teachers in planning, preparing and delivering quality and effective teaching and learning programs for verified students. The Advisory Visiting Teacher also leads in the development and maintenance of supportive school environments in which verified students are equally valued and challenged as learners. 3. MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS A strong demonstrated commitment to the objectives, vision, and ethos of Catholic Education Teaching qualifications and Current registration with Queensland College of Teachers. Additional qualifications in disability, special and / or inclusive education would be highly valued At least two years experience in the area of teaching students with disabilities Proven capacity to develop and implement programs and associated strategies and services to support the needs of students with disability A current motor vehicle driver s license 5. SELECTION CRITERIA Mandatory Requirement Possession of a degree in Education / Teaching from a recognised tertiary institution, or other equivalent formal qualifications and registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. 9 WORK PROFILE 1. WORK ENVIRONMENT The Advisory Visiting Teacher Disability works within Student Services as part of the Learning and Teaching team. Student Services lead in the development and implementation of effective and contemporary approaches for students with diverse learning needs. We strive towards improving models of inclusion and empowerment of all within our school communities to provide supportive educational environments. Through the support of effective pedagogies it is envisioned that all students will have equitable access to our Catholic school communities so that they may be supported to reach their full potential in development of not only their physical wellbeing but also their educational and faith journey. Frequent and regular school visits are a key component of this role 2. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Reports directly to Student Services Manager / Therapy & Disability Coordinator Works in close collaboration with Principals and school staff Works in close collaboration with the Student Services team 3. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Typical duties performed may include, but are not limited to: Regularly visit schools to provide a specialist advisory service to teachers of students verified under the categories of intellectual impairment and autistic spectrum disorder Advise and provide support provided in relation to curriculum (e.g. content, strategies, assessment), physical environment, resources and specialist equipment for verified students. Collaborate with parents, principals, class teachers, learning support teachers and other professionals in identifying the learning and social needs of verified students Participate in school based processes relevant to Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Reviews and Transition plans/programs Support the implementation of disability specific programs developed by other specialist support staff, e.g. Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists Develop effective working relationships with other specialist personnel, i.e. Therapists and AVTs, working in Catholic schools Monitor and support school based staff in their planning and support of verified students particularly Learning Support Teachers, Class Teachers and Student Officers Coordinate and support the process of verification of students in all disability areas Guide and support consistent implementation of policies and procedures pertaining to inclusion and other disability related issues, within all schools across the Diocese Maintenance of disability data at a diocesan level in consultation with the Student Services Manager Update and maintain own knowledge about key developments in the education of students with disabilities and in service teachers regarding these developments 9 P age

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The Commission for Children and Young People Act 2000 requires the preferred applicant to be subject to working with children check as part of the employment screening process.
