For more information on NRC-IMS please visit: <a href=" Your Challenge MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES The Surfaces and Interfaces Group investigates surface and interfacial structures of materials of strategic interest to IMS. The group also performs analysis in support of IMS projects, for collaborators and external clients. The Group operates a set of chemical (e.g. SIMS, Auger, XPS etc.), physical (XTEM, SEM, AFM etc.) and optical (Raman, PL, ellipsometry) characterization instruments and an ultra high vacuum cluster tool for in-situ process (ISP) development and analysis. The incumbent will be responsible for the general maintenance of an optical spectroscopy laboratory and for routine optical characterization measurements (e.g. Raman, photoluminescence spectroscopy, ellipsometry etc) on semiconductor samples. KEY ACTIVITIES

3 Maintains, repairs and troubleshoots the optical spectroscopy laboratory, which includes activities such as maintenance of lasers and ancillary equipment, cleaning and aligning optical components, filter replacements, operation of cryostats, etc. Performs routine optical characterization measurements on semiconductor-based samples, using techniques such as photoluminescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy or ellipsometry, organization of data, analysis of experimental data, etc. Assists the Research Officer (or principal investigator) in the preparation of functionalized surfaces suitable for sensor applications using a Raman scattering detection scheme. Provides instruction to visitors and students on the operation of equipment in the optical characterization laboratory. Screening Criteria Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates: Education Technical diploma in the physical sciences or engineering. Experience Significant experience using and maintaining complex scientific equipment in an R&D optical spectroscopy laboratory. Condition of Employment Reliability Status Language Requirements English Assessment Criteria Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria: Technical Competencies: Solid knowledge of optical components and vacuum equipment. Knowledge required in areas such as optics, electronics, vacuum, cryogenics and computer control of experiments (PC, Labview and GPIB interface standard). Knowledge of safety practices for working with compress gases, cryogenic fluids and electrical, mechanical and vacuum systems.

4 Ability to handle and mount optical components (samples such as semiconductors), lasers and other equipment in an optical spectroscopy laboratory. Ability to maintain, repair, assemble, troubleshoot and test electrical, optical, vacuum, mechanical, cryogenic and computer equipment. Acquisition, organization and analysis of scientific data.
