2 Introduction CSTT s scientific output flourished in 2014, with five reviewed papers published in highranked tourism journals and a wide range of book chapters and conference presentations. For the second time, CSTT co-organised the Freiburg international workshop on sustainable tourism mobility in Germany. An edited book on the 2012 workshop was published by Routledge, and included several CSTT chapters. The CARMATOP project is well underway and the carbon calculator, Carmacal, is now operational for the final tests in During 2014, associate professor Paul Peeters continued his work as a consultant for one day a week for the European NGO Transport & Environment. He assists T&E in negotiation within ICAO/CAEP, who are responsible for a new fuel efficiency standard in civil aviation. From the 1st of December 2014 this project is financed by the European Climate Fund with an extended budget until at least June Furthermore, the CSTT team said farewell to Jorick Pels, who did work on the two Travelling Large projects, and had to leave because of lack of further funding. On the other hand we welcomed Harald Buijtendijk, for assistance with CARMATOP, and Boukje Strous, because of a PhD proposal. Paul Peeters Associate Professor Sustainable Tourism and Transport 2

3 2014 Highlight The Freiburg workshops and output July 2014, the second international workshop in the Black Forest was organised by CSTT, together with University of Surrey, Western Norway Research Institute, and University of Otago. The conference theme The psychology of governing sustainable tourism mobility: Bridging the science-policy gap was covered by 26 high quality papers, presented by researchers from many renowned tourism institutes. A Special Issue in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism is planned for Meanwhile, the output of the Freiburg 2012 conference continued in After the Special Issue in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism 21(7) in 2013, an edited volume was published by Routledge in Spring Paul co-edited the volume together with Scott Cohen, James Higham and Stefan Gössling, and he and other CSTT authors contributed to five chapters (Cohen, Higham, Peeters, & Gössling, 2014; Eijgelaar & de Kinderen, 2014; Gössling, Peeters, Higham, & Cohen, 2014; Peeters, 2014; Ram, Nawijn, & Peeters, 2014). The volume has been reviewed rather positively, with a reviewer concluding that it is relevant for the approaches adopted, the insights discussed, and the repercussions of tourism within the increasingly crucial debate over climate change and sustainable development. [ ] This contribution, therefore, should be used as basis for a more critical review of the contemporary paradoxes of the tourism industry in the light of the evident environmental inefficiency of the tourist system as a whole (Amore, 2014, p. 3). 5 Projects A significant share of the CSTT income is generated by projects for third parties. In 2014, nearly all our project effort went into CARMATOP, our two-year project with the Dutch travel industry. The overall trend of revenues is stable with current project value only slightly lower as in The Projects overview shows we were working on 6 projects with a total value of around 230,000 euro. Some of these projects will continue in Project title CARMATOP Carbon Management for Tour Operators Year 2013/2015 Period until Budget 166,166 euro (total NHTV share) Client SIA Report/product See next page Project title Year Period until Budget Client Report/product Project title IMPACT (IMPlementation & Adoption of Carbon footprint in Tourism travel packages) 25,000 euro Year Period until Budget Client Report/product Project title European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Goossen, M., Peeters, P., Dubois, G. & Kalisch, D. 6 CARMATOP Carbon Management for Tour Operators The RAAK-SME project CARMATOP is one of the larger projects CSTT has been working on. In 2014, up to nine researchers from NHTV/CSTT were involved. The number of participating tour operators was extended to 15. The project is well underway and the carbon calculator, Carmacal, is fully operational for the final tests early 2015 the final project phase. In 2014, the following publications, reports and conference presentations were disseminated under this project: NHTV Research Newsletter, October 2014: CARMATOP a RAAK-SME project with benefits for industry, tourism education and the environment, an article by Eke Eijgelaar (NHTV CSTT). Consultant on aircraft CO2 standards Since March 2013, Paul Peeters is a member of the ICAO/CAEP Working Group 3, which is responsible for setting a new fuel efficiency standard for of civil aviation. He does so for the International Coalition for Sustainable Aviation (ICSA). Paul presented several papers at international CAEP meetings and contributed to discussions, often taking a contrarian opinion towards the aviation industry about the fuel efficiency standard. ICSA was established in 1998 by a group of national and international environmental NGOs as official observers. Since its inception, ICSA has contributed to CAEP s work on technical means to reduce emissions and noise, the role of market-based measures, supporting economic and environmental analysis, modelling and forecasting, and ICAO s carbon calculator. It has also been invited to present its views at ICAO workshops on carbon markets and bio-fuels, and has presented to the high-level Group on International Aviation and Climate Change (GIACC). ICSA uses the expertise within its NGO membership to formulate its co-ordinated positions. To gain the broadest level of understanding and input from environmental NGOs, ICSA communicates with, and invites comment from, other NGO networks and bodies working in related areas. ICSA s participation in ICAO and CAEP meetings is currently provided by the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF), the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Transport and Environment (T&E). 11 Education CSTT contributed to education by successfully guiding NHTV and WUR students with their (final) thesis or apprenticeship. Paul Peeters gave several guest lectures outside NHTV (see overview further down), notably for a Sustainable Tourism Course at the University of Surrey. Eke Eijgelaar co-organised the BSc Tourism first grade Environment & Tourism course in close collaboration with Wageningen University and Research (WUR), giving several lectures (e.g. on tourism emissions) and tutorials. In this fifth year of its existence, the BSc attracted some 40 first grade students. CSTT employees were also involved in the courses Tourism Economics and of Principles of Tourism (lecture Paul Peeters on tourism transport) for the same bachelor. Eke further contributed a lecture (tourism environmental impacts) and tutorials for ITMC 2nd grade course Tourism Impact Studies. Furthermore, he supervised three ITTI students with their final theses, and four ITTI students on international placement. In 2014, it contributed 11 posts on NHTV s daily Insight newsletter, several more on the Academy for Tourism newsletter, and a large item on CARMATOP in the NHTV Research newsletter. Four news items were posted on the CSTT website ( apart from constant updating of new publications, conference and project information. Many publications are now also disseminated through several LinkedIn, academia.eu, ResearchGate and GoogleCitations profiles. In January 2014, the IDUT platform was replaced by the MVO Netwerk Toerisme, under the MVO Nederland banner. CSTT remains active in this network, and contributed a post on its site (see under Public output). Employees working with CSTT in 2014 were: Rianne Nelemans, Eke Eijgelaar, Jeroen Nawijn, Martin Landré, Pieter Piket, Rob Bongaerts, Kim de Bruijn, Christa Barten, Jeroen Klijs, Harald Buijtendijk, Jorick Pels, Boukje Strous and Paul Peeters. Harald joined the CSTT for work on CARMATOP, Boukje for a PhD proposal. Jorick Pels was temporarily contracted until September Martin officially retired from NHTV in 2013, but will remain available for CSTT. In 2014, Eke refereed for the Journal of Sustainable Tourism (JoST). Paul refereed for Annals of Tourism Research, African Journal Of Business Management, Applied Energy, Current Issues in Tourism, International Journal of global Warming, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, Sustainability and tourism Management. Jeroen Nawijn for Tourism Analysis. CSTT activity related carbon emissions have been kept to a minimum, as all conference venues and business trips were made by train (except Paul who flew a day return for a meeting in London and a return to Madrid, both for the T&E ICAO project).
