1 Ecosystem approach to marine spatial planning Polish marine areas and the Natura 2000 network Report on task Task title: Elaboration of macrophytes layer of the Polish marine areas The main contractor: Maritime Institute in Gdańsk Gdańsk, March 2008
2 Ecosystem approach to marine spatial planning Polish marine areas and the Natura 2000 network Page 2 Basing on the archival data obtained in other research projects, the macrophytes occurrence and structure was elaborated for the investigated Polish marine areas: 1. Boulder area in the north-western Słupsk Bank, 2. Boulder area in the coastal zone off Rowy locality, 3. The r Puck Bay, 4. Coastal zone of the outer Puck Bay; from Cape to Hel (0-10 m depth), 5. Coastal zone of the Orłowo cliff area (0-10 m depth), Dates of sample collections and sampling stations characteristics are shown in table 1. Geographical coordinates of sampling stations in Orłowo cliff coastal waters were not mentioned by the author of the study (Kowalczuk 1996). Table 1. Number of species varied from 6 in the Rowy boulder area to 22 found in Długa and Bórzyńska Shoals along the Hel Peninsula (in the coastal zone of the outer Puck Bay). Biological diversity (number of species) of the Słupsk Bank and Orłowo cliff boulder bottoms was similar (table 2). Table 2. Data on biomass and species composition was submitted to the Habitat Mapping Environmental Database. Due to insufficient number of sampling stations, the distribution of macroalgae in the boulder areas of Słupsk Bank and Rowy were not determined. Bigger number of sampling stations were investigated in the coastal zone of the Orłowo cliff, however, they covered a part of the boulder bottoms. As a consequence, figures 3-5 show location of sampling stations and biomass dominance structure exclusively.
