1 bcd DEPARTMENT: J O B DIVISION/SECTION/UNIT: TITLE: D E S C R I P T I O N EDUCATION Ethnic Minority Language and Achievement Service (EMLAS) Arabic Bilingual Teaching Assistant POST NO: PE59143 GRADE: Grade 5 pro-rata. Term time only. RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of EMLAS 1. MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB/JOB SUMMARY/OVERALL OBJECTIVE 1.1. Act as a member of the EMLAS Service Delivery Team and contribute towards the achievement of EMLAS aims and objectives through assisting teachers and providing bilingual support to learners. 2. SUMMARY OF MAIN DUTIES/KEY TASKS OF THE POST 2.1. Work under the guidance of the EMLAS specialist teacher/ class/subject teacher/senior school staff 2.2. Assess learners competency in the home language (Arabic) and prepare written reports To work bilingually with a pupil or group of pupils to ensure English as an additional language (EAL) acquisition and curriculum access and achievement To undertake translation of curriculum materials where appropriate, as requested by the class/subject teacher/emlas specialist teacher To maintain appropriate EMLAS records on supported learners To provide background information on supported learners language, culture, religion for school staff/emlas staff To translate school communications/letters (in writing, over the phone, face-to-face) To attend parents evenings or other school-based meetings to act as an interpreter.

To make home visits (where requested) accompanied by a member of the school staff/emlas staff/education Welfare Service To liaise with EMLAS specialist teachers/class/subject teachers to plan, support and monitor the progress of supported learners To promote inclusion and ensure that supported learners have equal access to educational opportunities To encourage parents/carers and learners to value, maintain and develop their home languages To contribute to assessment arrangements for GCSEs in community languages, where appropriate To promote approaches at school level that value linguistic, religious, cultural and ethnic diversity To liaise with other education professionals and agencies (where appropriate) in respect of supported learners To make a contribution to policies, aspirations and plans at EMLAS and school level To undertake appropriate training and development. 3. GENERAL DUTIES 3.1. To adhere to the EMLAS procedures and practices To maintain a professional code of conduct at all times and to promote the aims of the EMLAS in all professional contacts To ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with Equal Opportunities legislation and City and County of Swansea Equal Opportunity Policy. 4. HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES 4.1. To undertake the Health and Safety responsibilities within the HASAWA Employees have a duty of care; 4.2. To take reasonable care for the health and safety of both themselves whilst at work and of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions (by what they do or do not do) To co-operate with the employer so as to enable the duty imposed on them to be performed or complied with Not to interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for their health, safety or welfare.

3 DISCLOSURE AND BARRING SERVICE The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has been introduced as a result of Part V of the Police Act, 1997 and will replace the current system of police checking (see attached notes). It should be noted that this post requires an Enhanced level of disclosure. DEPARTMENT: Education SECTION: EMLAS REQUIREMENTS FOR SAFE AND EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS 1.1. A good standard of education is essential Relevant qualifications are desirable e.g. TA Level 3, interpreting / translating, formal evidence of competency in English and Arabic. TECHNICAL COMPETENCE 2.1. Ability to drive is essential. Must hold a current driving licence. EXPERIENCE 3.1. Relevant experience of working with learners of all ages is essential Experience of working with other professionals is essential Experience of interpreting is desirable Experience of translating is desirable Experience of the British Education system is desirable e.g. as a learner, or volunteer in school etc 3.6. Links with the local Arabic community is desirable. SKILLS & ABILITIES COMMITMENT TO EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 4.1. 6 DISCLOSURE AND BARRING SERVICE (DBS) DISCLOSURE CHECKS The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), an Executive Agency of the Home Office, provides wider access to criminal record information through its Disclosure service. This service enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involve children or vulnerable adults. The DBS was established under Part V of the Police Act 1997 and was launched in March The DBS can issue 5 levels of Disclosure Certificates, depending on the position applied for, namely Standard, Enhanced, Enhanced with ISA check (children), Enhanced with ISA check (adults) and Enhanced with ISA check (children and adults) Prospective applicants should be aware that before any offer of appointment is confirmed the successful candidate will be required to complete an application for the appropriate level of disclosure; the Authority will provide the relevant DBS Application Forms. Proof of the successful candidate s identity will also be required in the form of the following: Passport, Driving Licence, Birth Certificate and Utility Bills. Candidates are selected on the basis of skill, qualifications and experience, and their match against the Person Specification.
