Map to other nearby hotels: Public Transportation/Metro: From the Ronald Reagan Airport to the Preferred Hotel, take the Blue Line towards Largo Town Center, and exit at McPherson Square, direction of 14 th and Franklin Square. Hotel is across the street. Approximate cost: $2-3. Note on Tours: Please read all directions carefully! For instance, no purses are allowed in the White House, and there is no baggage check. If it is raining, umbrellas are permitted. Cell phones and cell phones with cameras are allowed, however you will not be permitted to use them inside of the White House. Dinner includes 2 drink tickets, a large selection of passed appetizers, tax and gratuity. Directions from Hilton: Exit hotel to the left. 2 Saturday, October 27 Tour Notes Names of People Pre-approved for Capitol and White House Tours If your name is on one of the lists below, you have been cleared for both the Capitol and the White House Tours. If your name is not on one of the lists, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in either tour. Everyone whose security information was received by the September deadline has been cleared to attend both tours. What to bring: Official photo ID with information and name matching that which was previously submitted for clearance, money/credit card, phone or phone with camera (but no other type of camera), umbrella if there is rainy weather. Since no bags are allowed, consider bringing only what will fit into your pockets. Admission: Carrie Varouhakis of the Moore School holds the official group tour passes and will be on hand to facilitate admission for the group at both the Capitol and White House. Timing: There is not much time to get from the Capitol to the White House, so we should proceed to the Metro immediately upon the conclusion of the Capitol tour. Saturday, October 27 Itinerary Gather in the Hilton lobby to leave for Capitol Building Depart 9:00 a.m. Pam and Carrie will leave the Hilton at 9:00 am. Those staying at different hotels can join us for the procession. From the Hilton to the Capitol Visitors Center via the metro and walking is a brisk 30 minutes. We should allow closer to 60 minutes to manage our large group and to buy tickets at the Metro. Page 2 of 6
3 Saturday, October 27 Continued Capitol Tour Budget: Free + cost of metro $2-3 Many thanks to Congressman Clyburn s Office for setting this up. 10:00 a.m. Capitol Building 10:00 a.m. arrive to clear security (Bring ID) 10:20 a.m. guided tour of the Capitol as a single group See notes here for what NOT to bring. Metro: From McPherson Square, take Blue line towards Largo Town Center. Get off at Federal Center Metro Station (8 min, 5 stops) From there, go North on 3 rd Street SW (towards D St.) and turn Right Independence Avenue. Then, turn Left onto First Street SW. Proceed to the Capitol Visitor Center. The Capitol Visitor Center, the new main entrance to the U.S. Capitol, is located beneath the East Front plaza of the U.S. Capitol at First Street and East Capitol Street. Afterwards, follow the directions provided in the White House section of the itinerary below to either proceed to the White House or to return to the hotel. Capitol Building Tour Other Notes Before entering the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center, all visitors are screened by a magnetometer, and all items that are permitted inside the building are screened by an x-ray device. Visitors should keep their belongings with them at all times as unattended items may result in a disruption of service at the Capitol. While certain exceptions for medical needs can be made, the following items strictly prohibited: Liquid, including water Food or beverage of any kind, including fruit and unopened packaged food Aerosol containers Non-aerosol spray (Prescriptions for medical needs are permitted.) Any pointed object, e.g. knitting needles and letter openers (Pens and pencils are permitted). Any bag larger than 18 wide x 14 high x 8.5 deep Electric stun guns, martial arts weapons or devices Guns, replica guns, ammunition, and fireworks Knives of any size Mace and pepper spray Razors and box cutters Page 3 of 6
4 Saturday, October 27 Continued Gather to depart for White House Depart 11:30 a.m. It is an estimated 30 minutes travel time to reach White House via Metro and walking. We will leave the Capitol no later than 11:30 am to arrive at the White House by 12:15 pm. It is recommended to have a snack or get some water at this point before proceeding to the White House. White House Tour Budget: Free + cost of metro $2-3 Many thanks to Congressman Clyburn s Office for setting this up. 12:15 p.m. White House 12:15 p.m. arrive to clear security (Bring ID see notes) 12:30 p.m. First Group tours (see below for assignment) 1:00 p.m. Second Group tours (see below for assignment) See notes at end of itinerary for what NOT to bring & IDs. Tours are self-guided, however United States Secret Service officers are posted in every room to provide historical information about the room and the White House. Please feel free to ask them questions. From Capitol Building, return to Federal Center Metro Station, located at the corner of 3 rd and D Streets. (From Independence Avenue, go Left onto 3 rd Street.) Take the Blue line towards Franconia-Springfield. Get off at McPherson Square Metro Station (8 min, 5 stops). To proceed to the White House, exit in the direction of 14 th St and Franklin Square (not White House). Exit Metro to Right, continue on 14 th St, turn Right on H St, continue to 15 th St and turn Left onto 15 th St. Continue to Alexander Hamilton Place on Right where you will see a gate and sign for White House Tours. Groups should enter the White House complex at the corner of 15th Street and Alexander Hamilton Place. Uniformed National Park Service Rangers are posted to assist groups as they arrive. Groups should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled tour time. Late arrivals may not be accommodated. Page 4 of 6
5 Saturday, October 27 Continued Free time for lunch, sightseeing, etc. 1:45 p.m. approx Pam Ex will organize lunch with anyone who is interested. Near the Hilton are the quick options of Cosi, Pret a Manger, Potbellies, NY Café, Starbucks and a CVS Pharmacy. Suggested itineraries for the afternoon are: 1. A walk around the monuments: Washington, World War II, Vietnam, Lincoln, Korean War, Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and perhaps the Jefferson Memorial. 2. Visit to any of the Smithsonian museums Admission is free to all museums. a. ms - Most of these are on the Mall within walking distance of the White House and Hotel and the larger ones have nice cafeterias for lunch. 3. Relax at the hotel. The Hilton has a great pool and work-out facility. Dinner Budget: $70 per person Deposit to be paid in advance 6:30 p.m. Capitol City Brewery 1100 New York Avenue Northwest Washington, DC (202) We will be in a private room. Photo slideshow tonight! Directions from the Hilton: Do not go to 1100 New York Ave! If you do, continue walking around the building until you see the restaurant on the corner of H and 11 th. Exit Hotel to the left. Turn Left on H St.. Continue on H St. as the street jogs to the right of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Continue to 11 th St, restaurant on your Left. Page 5 of 6
6 White House Tour Other Notes Groups should enter the White House complex at the corner of 15th Street and Alexander Hamilton Place. Uniformed National Park Service Rangers are posted to assist groups as they arrive. Groups should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled tour time. Late arrivals may not be accommodated. Groups who arrive for a tour should not bring: - Cameras or Video Recorders - Handbags, book bags, backpacks or purses - Food or beverages, tobacco products, personal grooming items (i.e. makeup, lotion, etc.) - Strollers - Any pointed objects - Aerosol containers - Guns, ammunition, fireworks, electric stun guns, mace, martial arts weapons/devices, or knives of any size There is no place at the White House to check a bag or a prohibited item. If it is raining, umbrellas are permitted. Cell phones and cell phones with cameras are allowed, however you will not be permitted to use them inside of the White House. Cell phones used inside the White House are subject to confiscation. All guests 18 years of age or older will need to present photo identification with information matching the name previously submitted for clearance. Individuals without acceptable identification or whose identification does not exactly match the name or data cleared for entry may be denied entry. Acceptable forms of ID include: - Valid Government issued United States' drivers license - Valid Government issued United States' identification card - Valid United States or other official government issued passports - Valid United States State Department ID - For foreign nationals, only VALID passports are accepted No foreign-issued state IDs, foreign-issued driver s licenses, expired passports, or other forms of identification will be accepted.
