4 PASSPORTS The party will travel on a group passport. Each pupil will have their own identity card (a German requirement). Unless arranged, Pupils with their own passports should not take them. INSURANCE 1 EHIC (Medical Insurance) 2 Comprehensive insurance has been arranged through Nottinghamshire County Council. SPENDING MONEY ENGLISH MONEY You may wish your son/daughter to purchase a meal on the outward and return journeys in which case between 5 and 10 would be needed for a meal on the outward journey at the airport. Alternatively, you may wish for them to bring a packed lunch. The first meal provided will be the evening meal on Thursday. For the return journey, students will need approx. 10 Euros to buy some food at Munich Airport. PLEASE NOTE that passengers are not permitted to take liquids on board the aircraft. If students haven t finished their drinks before we arrive at the airport, they will not be allowed to take it through the security checks it will have to be disposed of before this point. EUROS As a rough guide, about 60 ( 50 approx.) will be needed to cover purchases of souvenirs, ice creams, drinks (Coke can cost 1+). Money should be changed BEFORE travel to Germany. This can take a few days from a bank or building society, but local travel agents or the Post Office, Retford, can offer an on the spot service. word/trips/franceexcursion2006 4

5 LUGGAGE Pupils should bring one small piece of hand baggage and one piece of checked baggage. Both of these must adhere to the airline s regulations, as excess baggage charges cannot be paid for by the Elizabethan Academy. PLEASE NOTE parents will be responsible for paying excess baggage charges imposed by the airline. One piece of hand baggage is allowed on EasyJet flights, with standard maximum dimensions of 50x40x20cm, including handles and wheels. There is no weight limit to your carry-on bag, but the one piece limit is strictly enforced. If you have a handbag, it must be placed into the carry-on bag, otherwise an extra fee will be applied. There is a checked baggage allowance of 1 bag (up to 20kg/44lbs). Pupils will be responsible for carrying their own luggage. All luggage should be clearly marked with the pupil s name Liquids in hand baggage There are a number of rules to remember about what to put in your hand baggage and what to leave at home or pack in your hold luggage. Importantly, the word liquids has a wider meaning than you would perhaps think in the first instance. For example: lip balm, lip sticks, hand creams, deodorant, and hair spray are all considered liquids in this context. The rules: The liquid is in a container with a maximum volume of 100ml Each passenger can carry a maximum of 1000ml (e.g. 10 x 100ml) All containers must comfortably fit into a transparent, re-sealable 1 litre plastic bag, measuring no more than 20 x 20cm This plastic bag must be removed from the hand baggage and shown separately to airport security You ll be asked to dispose of any liquids that don t match these requirements so please take note! word/trips/franceexcursion2006 5

6 DRESS Pupils are expected to be reasonably dressed at all times; comfortable clothing should be packed. No objection is raised to smart jeans. Flat, comfortable shoes should be worn at all times. Do pack a warm waterproof coat in case of rain. It is likely to be very cold (a few years ago we had temperatures of -6!), so please pack some thermal vests and long johns, as well as lots of warm layers. You should also bring a hat, scarf and gloves, as we will be outside for a considerable amount of time. School Uniform need not be worn BEHAVIOUR Behaviour will be exemplary. Pupils are expected to be courteous to the coach driver and airline staff at all times. Litter should be placed in the bags provided. If there is a chemical toilet on the bus, please use this only in emergencies, as the driver may not have the opportunity to empty storage tanks and refill the cistern! IMPORTANT For your own safety, you will be expected to SIT in your seat at all times on the coach and the aeroplane. You MUST NOT kneel on the seats or walk or run up and down the aisle of the bus or aeroplane. You MUST always wear your seat belt. CHEWING GUM is banned at all times. Students MUST listen carefully to the safety briefing given by the airline staff before take-off. They must also follow the instructions given by the airline staff immediately and without question.. and in the hotel Pupils will be expected to remain in their own rooms and to keep the noise to a reasonable level remember, walls can be VERY thin! Boys are not allowed in girls rooms under any circumstances and vice versa. At meal times, noise should be kept to a reasonable level we must show consideration for all other guests. Mobile phones are not permitted at meal times. Smoking and alcohol are banned. You must not buy fireworks. Pupils will be supervised at all times in the hotel. word/trips/franceexcursion2006 6

7 BLOG Whilst we are away the students will write accounts of their experiences and we will post them as a blog. You will be able to follow our activities and see photos from the trip. We are only able to post updates to the blog when we have suitable internet access and we cannot guarantee what time this will be. If you do not wish to have your child's photo included could you please let Mr Oldbury know as soon as possible (oldburyn@elizabethan.notts.sch.uk). The web address you will need to use is: vle.elizabethan.notts.sch.uk/germany2014 VALUABLES All valuables (cameras, personal stereos, etc.) are taken at the pupil s own risk. We are insured for loss or theft, but we expect pupils to take care of their own belongings at all times. MOBILE PHONES Mobile phones may be taken, but it would be advisable to check, prior to departure, whether they will work abroad. Pay phones will be available for use. Pupils often share the cost of a phone card and it is the most economical way to phone home. ALCOHOL & CUSTOMS RIGHTS It is illegal for pupils to purchase alcohol (of any sort) and cigarettes in Germany; it is illegal for pupils to bring any alcohol drinks or tobacco products (cigars, cigarettes, tobacco) into this country. It is also illegal to bring flick knives or any other offensive weapons (however innocent it may be or look e.g. flick combs ), fireworks and pornographic materials into this country. Replica guns of any type, however innocent they may be, MUST NOT be bought. Pupils may bring back perfume and eau de cologne. word/trips/franceexcursion2006 7

8 THINGS TO TAKE Usual toiletries towels tissues books/magazines and games for the journey thermals hat, scarf and gloves warm, water-proof coat warm clothing comfortable, flat shoes any medication needed Please notify staff of any medical requirements. Do let us know if these have changed recently. We shall take a first-aid kit with us, but if: You need to take any medicines, bring an adequate supply. You think you are going to have a headache or an upset stomach bring something that works for you.
