WALES THIRD SECTOR FUNDING CONFERENCE 2014 Making a better ask for funding Venue Cymru, Llandudno Thursday 2 October 2014 #walesfundingconf

The third sector is changing. We are a long way from the days when we could rely on grants and philanthropy alone. Today, third sector organisations take out loans, raise funds online, play a major role in the delivery of services and trade goods and services. While none of these developments are entirely new, what is significant is the scale and pace of change within the sector and the widespread recognition that to survive, and indeed prosper, organisations need to make a better ask for funding. The conference is the largest funding event in Wales and offers delegates: Exciting and influential speakers that inspire The chance to meet funders from Wales, Europe and the rest of the UK Valuable networking opportunities The opportunity to grow and develop you and your organisation This is your chance to really improve your asks don t miss it. 3 Plenary sessions I wish I d thought of that Michael Norton OBE Director of the Centre for Innovation in Voluntary Action Innovation is a huge buzzword in fundraising at the moment. As resources are squeezed further, doing things differently, trying out new ideas and finding fresh ways of generating income has never been so important. Michael Norton OBE is a serial social entrepreneur having spent more than 40 years supporting voluntary organisations, developing creative ideas, turning them into successful projects and encouraging others to go out and change the world. Michael s talk will focus on innovations in fundraising, covering ideas for income generation - social enterprise, crowd funding, crowd sourcing, lending for good, social investment tax relief and investing in individuals as the focal point for creating change. How to add icing and marzipan when there is no fruitcake Paul Streets Chief Executive, Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales The Foundation relies on small charities to achieve its mission of Breaking disadvantage: bettering lives. They believe that the changes in the funding environment will be lasting and will threaten the fruitcake funding model Foundations like Lloyds have relied on. They are concerned that many of the small organisations its funds are not responding fast enough or radically enough. In April, the Foundation launched a new strategy following an analysis of the environment for the small charities it is committed to funding. In his plenary Paul will talk about the thinking that influenced the strategy, reflect on the challenges for the organisations funded by the Foundation, discuss why this matters to the people they want to reach and suggest ways in which small charities and funders might respond. What s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet Simi Epstein Director of Fundraising, Hope House Children s Hospices This one line encapsulates the central struggle and tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, and is one of Shakespeare s most famous quotes. Its meaning in today s language is that what matters is what something is, not what it is called. Many charities do much more than their name implies for example Hope House Children s Hospices are more than a hospice and certainly more than just a building. Follow Simi s journey during the past year as Hope House have focused their fundraising efforts more on what they do and less on their name. Learn how they have sought to make a better ask for funding by changing their identity and brand. Wales Funding Conference

Workshop session A (10:30-11:30) Our workshops bring together exciting and influential speakers, and are ideasfocused and practical. The sessions are designed to inspire and foster confidence, helping you to grow and develop your fundraising skills. Making a better ask or case for support is essential for any organisation seeking funding. It is both the cornerstone of any fundraising campaign and can help promote your best achievements. The workshops provide tools and techniques to help you make a better ask for funding, tips on joint working and how to measure, demonstrate and communicate impact to donors and funders alike. 1 European Structural & Investment Funds : A dummy s guide to opportunities for the third sector Judith Stone, WCVA Are European Structural Funds a relevant source of funding for my organisation? If your organisation and trustees have ever considered this question and not found an obvious answer or felt intimidated by the language and seeming complexity and bureaucracy involved in accessing Structural Funds, come along to our awareness raising session to find out more about the peculiarities of EU funding. The session will provide basic information on the pros and cons of running an EU funded project and will help organisations with limited knowledge or experience to decide whether or not to pursue European Structural & Investment Funding in Make your digital fundraising work Matt Howarth, Reason Digital Digital and social media is revolutionising how we communicate with our supporters. Yet even the biggest charities are struggling to turn their tweets and likes into pounds and pence. Supporters who share on social media are up to four times more likely to support you than those that don t - so don t lose hope. Attend this workshop to learn the latest tips, tricks and tools to make the web make you money - and find out how asking for less could be the secret to earning much more from your fans, followers and subscribers. 3 Meet the funders Mike Lewis, Lloyds Bank Foundation for England & Wales and Jemma Wray, Children in Need This workshop offers the opportunity to attend mini-workshops to learn more about our featured funders including what funding is available, how to apply and where to go for help. Wales Funding Conference

Workshop session A (10:30-11:30) 4 Getting it right making a better ask to Big Lottery Fund 6 Making the ask together skills for effective partnerships Andrea Clarke & Kimba Cooper, Big Lottery Fund Wales This workshop will provide top tips to help applicants applying to Big Lottery Fund s People and Places Programme and how to pass through the outline proposal stage. The People and Places programme has an annual budget of 19.8 million to fund capital and revenue projects that support co-ordinated action by people to make their communities better places to live. It supports local projects and those that operate in more than one geographical area, regionally or throughout Wales. 5 Making the most of your annual report for fundraising Frank Learner, Greengage Associates With a little thought, the annual report can become a really useful document that helps to sell your charity. Frank will introduce you to what funders expect from the annual report, and illustrate structure and style options from recent award-winning reports will see some changes to the annual accounts format (a new SORP) changes relevant to fundraising will be covered. Bring along your charity s annual report for a one-to-one opinion. Stephan Stockton MBE There is a vast range of different opportunities for organisations to generate income through working together, but the skills required for partnership working are common across all forms. Learning how to negotiate, agree shared aims and establish boundaries are all vital in developing projects with potential partners. Whether you re exploring a merger, submitting a partnership grant application or organising a joint fundraising event, this workshop will provide you with the personal and relational skills needed to help ensure your partnership will be a success. 7 Shaping Impact Practice James Magowan, Association of Charitable Foundations Funders can play a critical role in shaping behaviour in relation to monitoring and evaluation, both through providing resources but also in their relationship with grantees. Inspiring Impact has developed an integrated approach to help funders and third sector organisations improve their impact practice. This session will explore the resources available and demonstrate how they can be put into practice to help demonstrate and communicate impact. Wales Funding Conference

Workshop session B (12:00-13:00) 8 Accessing European Funding: the Erasmus+ programme 10 Using your case for support to make a better ask Kevin Robinson delivered by the Erasmus+ UK National Agency, a partnership between British Council and Ecorys UK This workshop will introduce delegates to the funding opportunities available under the Erasmus+ programme. The workshop will focus on how the programme can support third sector organisations looking in particular at funding for staff development and collaborative partnerships. Erasmus+ has a strong adult education strand which the workshop will cover in detail. Following the workshop delegates should have a good overview of the programme and the activities supported, and will have a clear understanding of how they can apply for funding in Facing your fears how to ask businesses for support Sarah Thomas (Business Supporting Communities (B2C), Claire Savage (Accord PR), Llyr Williams (Swayne Johnson) and Roy Jones (Scottish Power) Approaching a local business for support can be a daunting experience, but very often can be a win for both organisations. During this interactive workshop Business Supporting Communities (B2C) together with a panel of local businesses will: Share their experiences of working in collaboration Look at the benefits of business community investment Give you the tools to develop strategic relationships and keep connected Jo Byron and Jane Selman, Freelance Trust Fundraisers What is a case for support and why is it so important in fundraising? How can you talk about the impact your organisation makes in a compelling way? How do you communicate the case for support for your cause effectively to your current supporters and new prospects? How do you choose when to use stories to demonstrate impact, rather than facts and figures? What could you do differently to articulate these vital elements? With over 30 years of fundraising experience, Jo and Jane promise an interactive workshop sharing top tips for making a better ask. 11 The crowd is as important as the funding Michael Norton OBE Co-founder of Buzzbnk Imagine being in contact with thousands of like-minded people who each want to invest 10 in your charity, project or venture online? That s the basis of crowdfunding - literally sourcing funds from a crowd. The idea is young, but it s rapidly growing in popularity. But it isn t all about the money crowdfunding is about building and benefiting the community. Michael Norton OBE, co-founder of Buzzbnk an online crowdfunding platform will explain how to build your own crowdfunding campaign helping you to design your project, define your returns and discover your crowd. Wales Funding Conference

Workshop session B (12:00-13:00) Making a better ask for Inspiring Impact let your legacy gifts impact do the asking Dr Claire Routley, Consultant at Legacy Fundraising Over the next 30 years, the income from legacies to our sector will increase dramatically. In order for our organisations to benefit from this increase, however, we need to effectively make the case for legacy giving to our supporters. Fundraisers often find the legacy ask one of the most challenging. This session will explore how to overcome these challenges, consider the motivations that underlie legacy giving and how we can use these in our asks, and help you develop the confidence to talk about this difficult subject. 13 Venture Philanthropy in Wales a new kind of ask Liza Kellet (Community Foundation in Wales) & Matt Brown (WCVA) The third sector is undergoing a revolution, with more and more organisations generating commercial income to support their charitable aims and objectives. But to get to this profitable stage a mix of outside investment and expertise is often required. Venture Philanthropy, pioneered in Wales by the Community Foundation in Wales, could play a much larger part than it currently is in meeting this requirement. Could you benefit, what is it that you need to thrive and grow, and could venture philanthropy form part of this mix? Bryan Collis, Senior Research Officer WCVA This workshop will provide an opportunity to examine your organisation s impact demonstration practice using the Inspiring Impact code of good impact practice. Using a step by step self assessment tool it enables you to identify your strengths and areas for improvement. Links to other Inspiring Impact resources can be made to enable you to plan the improvements or find the tools you need. 15 Meet the funders Alan Whittick, Comic Relief and Andrea Powell, Community Foundation in Wales This workshop offers the opportunity to attend mini-workshops to learn more about our featured funders including what funding is available, how to apply and where to go for help. Wales Funding Conference

Workshop session C (14:00-15:00) 16 European Structural & Investment Funds Friends with benefits how to turn customers into donors Phil Fiander, WCVA and the Welsh European Funding Office During West Wales & the Valleys will benefit from a third tranche of European Structural & Investment Funds. This workshop will provide the latest information on the design and implementation arrangements for the programmes, looking specifically at delivery opportunities for the third sector. 17 Meet the funders Richard Tynen, The Funding Centre How do you convince casual visitors or occasional customers to become donors to your cause? Many charities, heritage and arts organisations are looking at quick and sustainable ways of finding new donors. This fast-paced and interactive session will look at some of the successes and failures of recent campaigns across a whole host of organisations. Whether you are new to fundraising or are looking at introducing new streams of income to an established organisation, there will be plenty for you to get your teeth into. Andrea Clarke, Big Lottery Fund and Anna Rees, Waterloo Foundation This workshop offers the opportunity to attend mini-workshops to learn more about our featured funders including what funding is available, how to apply and where to go for help. Wales Funding Conference

Workshop session C (14:00-15:00) 19 Renewables funding for the future 21 Outcomes and impact: demonstrating the difference you make David Eccles, Welsh Government This interactive workshop will explore the potential benefits, barriers and opportunities that renewable energy offers the third sector. It is based on the experience of the Welsh Government s Ynni r Fro programme, which offers grant aid, loans and free, independent advice to help social enterprises develop their own community scale renewable energy schemes across Wales. Hear from those who have benefited from the programme and those who have provided support, highlighting the potential benefits of adopting a local distributed generated model. The workshop will also focus on the ongoing and future support Welsh Government will provide after Ynni r Fro ends in March Funding co-production Gareth Coles, WCVA WCVA and many others are calling for a new way of organising public services and a new way of working with third sector organisations, people and their communities. But as the co-production policy gains momentum, what does this mean for funding relationships between public bodies and the third sector? This workshop will discuss the practical implementation of co-production policy and explore funding issues. How can funding mechanisms be used to facilitate co-production? What are the implications for commissioning and procurement? And is there a role for grant funding or social investment? Harriet Pearce Willis, Charities Evaluation Service (CES) In this practical and accessible workshop, Harriet will take you through a step-bystep process to demonstrate the difference you make with your work. She will show you how to identify your key outcomes and impacts, and how to collect robust and useful data. There will also be some top tips for communicating your findings to your stakeholders. 22 Communicating with impact Helena Sharpstone, Director Sharpstone Skinner 85 per cent of all problems at work can be traced back to something to do with communication. Once it was enough to hone our technical fundraising skills. But you can t separate fundraising and communication, so now we have to develop ourselves interpersonally to the highest level if we are to build effective relationships with a range of supporters, colleagues and key partners. This practical session is aimed at helping you make the right impact when communicating your services, expertise and ideas and develop a more natural, flexible style of doing what you do.
