3 1 Welcome Welcome to the Energy Institute s Level 1 management essentials online training course. The course is designed to give an energy manager all the skills they need in order to manage energy effectively on a day to day basis. It is designed to be flexible so you can take it at your own pace and can learn at times that suit you. Your course team are here to help you in any way we can, please don t hesitate to contact us. 4 2 Expectations 2.1 What you can expect from the Energy Institute and your tutor A tutor who has a high level of knowledge in the area being delivered High quality online learning platform, which is interactive, user-friendly and meets your needs Reasonable support arrangements to be made for any learning needs you advise us of in advance queries following the course to be responded to within 1 week Submitted coursework and assessment marks to be returned to you within 3 weeks For your work to be marked fairly and for you to receive feedback on project work Opportunities to provide us with feedback To be treated with respect 2.2 The Energy Institute expects that you will: Show full commitment to the course, by: o Completing all 10 modules, and the assessment including both the exam and energy audit project Maintain effective communication with the EI and your tutor Inform us of any difficulties you are having with accessing or completing the course 2.3 Time Commitment The course is designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing you to complete at your own pace and at times that suit you. The course in full should take roughly 60 hours to complete, with an additional non-timed end of course assessment, and an estimated 8-10 hours to be spent on the energy audit project.
5 3 Course content and learning outcomes The course content is broadly divided into 10 modules. The learning outcomes detailed below describe what you should expect to be able to do by the end of each module and will form the basis of the assessment. Module 1 - Introduction to Energy Management 2 - Metering and Buying 3 Monitoring and Targeting Techniques 4 Regulations, Standards and Initiatives 5 Energy Auditing in Practice Learning Outcomes Define the terms Energy and Energy Management Describe the role of an energy manager Explain the significance of energy management Estimate how much money an energy manager could save your organisation Determine whether or not your organisation is carrying out a systematic approach to energy management Define what we mean by Monitoring and targeting and how it can be used to help the energy manager Identify the key features of different types of energy meters including smart meters, portable solutions and sub-metering. Explain the different data collection techniques that are available Describe the key features of the UK energy markets State the key features of an energy invoice Explain how the data from an energy invoice can be used in your role as an energy manager Describe the monitoring and targeting process Apply a number of monitoring and targeting techniques with in your workplace to detect avoidable energy waste Establish challenging but realistic energy targets for your organisation. Identify key UK & International bodies that introduce energy legislation & regulations State the differences between directives, regulations and standards Describe the concepts of carbon emissions and carbon trading Develop an understanding of the concept of carbon emissions, carbon trading and how they are regulated and reported upon State key items of UK legislation & regulations governing energy use Give an overview of forthcoming UK energy legislation Identify key UK, EU and international voluntary standards relating to energy Assess the benefits and drivers of an energy audit Explain the Energy Audit Process and the elements that make up the process Review and analyse energy data as part of the audit process Describe the types of equipment and key considerations required when carrying out an energy audit Undertake an energy audit of your home, workplace or other building.
6 6 Energy Auditing: Report Writing 7 Energy Management Solutions 8 Energy Management: Project Development 9 Renewables 10 - Mounting an Effective Staff Awareness Campaign Describe the contents and writing style of an energy report Explain how reports are read and in what ways this should affect how you write Make an effective business case for prospective opportunities Explain key points of best practice when developing and giving presentations Formulate an energy report from an audit of your home, workplace or other building Identify solutions that will lead to reductions in energy costs and usage. Explain how to assess new and replacement technologies for their potential to achieve greater energy efficiency Decide what is best in energy saving solutions for your particular business or organisation whether it be technology or people orientated. Explain which methodologies and procedures can be employed within your organisation to get the best results Ascertain what sources of information are available to you to help your journey towards greater energy efficiency Perform Basic Energy Consumption Calculations Identify what help you may require from internal and external resources such as energy consultants, advisors and suppliers. Assess the financial potential of any revenue or capital expenditure project. State of what resources are available to help plan and finance any expenditure related project. Give examples of how to overcome both financial and human barriers to change. Prepare a specification for a project that highlights all of the relevant parameters, reduces risk, and increases understanding for internal and external stakeholders. Identify key renewable energy sources and the technologies available to exploit them State differences and similarities between technologies designed to exploit renewable energy sources and those focused upon fossil fuels Explain the concept of carbon emission reduction and how renewable energy technologies can contribute to this Describe key UK legislation and incentives to support investment in renewable energy technologies Give an overview of passive techniques which exploit renewable sources of energy Plan an effective staff awareness campaign so that you can realistically achieve your goals. Assigning roles and responsibilities when implementing a campaign Describe how to confirm the effectiveness of the campaign by reviewing the levels of awareness throughout your organisation Explain the importance of gaining and maintaining the right level commitment throughout the different levels of management
7 4 Resources The course makes use of a number of resources, including a course text book which has been written by our industry expert tutors to support you during the course, and for your post course study. A copy will be available for download on the learning centre. All course materials will also be available for viewing and download on the learning centre. This will include general course resources and module specific resources. All of these can be found in each module s Resources section. 4.1 Learning Centre The Energy Institutes Learning Centre is where you can access the course. It is the central home for your learning, and should provide you with everything you need as you work your way through the course including: This learner handbook Each of the 10 course modules All course materials, including each module s information pack, learning objectives, module overviews, activities, and case studies. Course resources Course feedback forms The assessment An area for you to upload your project work and receive feedback Final grades Logging into the learning centre: Launch your web-browser and navigate to and follow the steps below: If you haven t previously registered, click on Register in the My Account login box. Fill in the registration form then click Submit. You will then be taken to the gateway page. Click the Go button next to the course you have purchased. The first time you access each module you will be asked for an access key. Your access key will be issued to you in your joining instructions, but if you lose this please do not hesitate to contact one of the training team who will be able to let you know.

9 5 Assessment information The assessment of the Level 1 Certificate in Energy Management Essentials has two components, a written end of course assessment, which you will be able to take on the learning centre once you have worked through all 10 modules; and a short energy audit and report which will need to be completed after you have worked through the course modules and assessment. The end of course assessment will cover most learning outcomes from the course, through a mixture of multiple-choice, long and short answer and calculation questions. The pass mark for the exam is 60%. The course project requires you to conduct an audit of your workplace, or if you are a consultant of one of your clients sites. You will be asked to make a number of recommendations to improve the energy efficiency of the site. Full details of the project brief and marking scheme are available from the learning centre in the resources section. The pass mark for the project is 60%. The deadline for submission is 6 weeks after the completion of the course. We expect it to take you roughly between 8-10 hours to complete. Both the exam and project must be passed in order to successfully complete the course. 5.1 Resits In the event of you being unsuccessful in any aspect of the course on your first attempt, you will be invited to have a further attempt. In the case of the written assessment, the second attempt will usually be arranged within 6 weeks of the mark being returned to the learner. In the event of the retake not meeting the pass mark, one final attempt will be possible following a 3 month revision period. This third attempt will incur a VAT marking fee. In the event of the third attempt being unsuccessful, learners shall not be able to take any further attempts without purchasing and retaking the full course. In the case of the project, you will be invited to re-submit an improved version to incorporate your tutor s feedback on a date to be agreed between the learner and the tutor. This date should usually be within 6 weeks of the mark being returned to the learner. In the event of the resubmission not being successful, one final attempt will be possible. This third attempt will incur a VAT marking fee. 5.2 Extensions Extensions to the project deadline will only be granted in exceptional circumstances. Learners who wish to apply for an extension should do so in writing to:

Additional extensions beyond 4 weeks will incur a VAT marking fee. 6 Feedback The end of course feedback form should be completed immediately after the end of the course. All feedback is welcome and it is a vital aspect of ensuring the best possible course for our learners. If you would like to make a complaint you can do so either by completing the feedback form, or sending a message directly to one of the training team by the learning centre s messaging service, or by . All complaints will be logged and sent through to the training team manager immediately. We take all complaints seriously and will do our best to respond as hastily and as efficiently as possible.
