3 3 1 Operations and maintenance (O&M) of solar power plants and wind farms An essential performance tool for optimum energy production A wind farm or a solar power station will only continue to perform optimally over time if their technical facilities are properly managed if the equipment is monitored, operated, maintained and improved on an ongoing basis. Experts at EDF EN Services in Europe and EDF Renewable Services in North America (both fully-owned subsidiaries belonging to EDF Energies Nouvelles and exclusively involved in operations and maintenance) manage renewable energy facilities for both EDF Energies Nouvelles and third parties. They are involved at all levels in optimising the energy production of these facilities. Their teams are responsible for monitoring performance, remotely managing assets, scheduling work and all maintenance operations. The maintenance operations that they carry out are both: - Predictive in order to foresee the damages and breakdown - Preventive carrying out scheduled work specifically tailored to meet the requirements of each technology. An average of two 60-hour preventive maintenance operations is required per year for an onshore wind turbine to operate optimally. - Corrective addressing any faults as quickly as possible. It is therefore vital to have a local maintenance service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Maintenance offices connected to an Operations Control Center (OCC) To provide a high-quality, responsive service, EDF EN Services builds Operations Control Centers that are located as close to the facilities as possible. In France, nine maintenance offices have been opened since 2013, bringing the total number of Maintenance offices currently in operation across the network up to 19. Colombiers Operations Control Center All the Europe-based maintenance offices feature the most sophisticated monitoring and intervention tools. Each Maintenance office works closely alongside the Colombiers-based Operations Control Center for wind farms and solar power plants management, where more than 30 experts track performance remotely on a

4 4 continual basis (24 hours a day, 7 days a week ). The Operations Control Center features a high-technology control room from which EDF EN Services has an overview of all the facilities for which it is responsible. Information from the renewable energy facilities is processed continuously, and any deficiencies which may require either remote intervention or intervention on the ground can be detected immediately. This center is the only one of its kind in Europe. It is the only center able of managing all aspects of renewable energy facilities, irrespective of the technologies used and the equipment integrated everything from wind turbines to photovoltaic inverters, as well as electricity substations and even weather stations. The center's experts can keep an eye on the facilities and carry out corrective action remotely using a unique monitoring system connected up to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) on the wind turbines, inverters and electricity substations. The Colombiers-based European Operations Control Centers is linked up to a dense network of regional centres located as close as possible to the "green" facilities. As soon as the slightest problem that cannot be repaired remotely is detected, the Colombiers center dispatches a local maintenance unit to the site so that repairs can be carried out as soon as possible. The engineers continuously analyse statistical data about the facilities, ensuring that they continue to operate correctly and optimising the energy production. They are also involved in implementing specific maintenance plans: they provide the operations team and maintenance centers with high-level technical support so that corrective action plans can be implemented or special action plans based on feedback as part of an ongoing performance improvement initiative. A second European Operations Control Centers dedicated to offshore wind farms will be built between now and the end of 2017 in Nantes. It will be based near Alstom s R&D center and will focus on "Ocean" related activities. Alstom is EDF Energies Nouvelles exclusive provider of turbines for French offshore wind farms. This future offshore wind farm Operations Control Center will supervise the operation of EDF Energies Nouvelles offshore wind farms in France (the Fécamp and Courseulles-sur- Mer wind farms, as well as the Saint-Nazaire wind farm currently in development), and in the UK (the Teesside wind farm which commenced operation in 2013). The Operations Control Center will be operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will employ around 50 people. EDF EN Services through its German subsidiary REETEC has entered in wind offshore O&M with the Bard wind farm, located in the North Sea.

5 5 O&M, a strategic activity for EDF Energies Nouvelles EDF EN Services has introduced a high-quality operations and maintenance service for renewable electricity facilities in Europe for itself and for third parties. As of June, 30 th 2015, the EDF Energies Nouvelles subsidiary is responsible for maintaining 1450 MW of installed capacity (950 MW of wind power and 500 MWc of solar power). Its heritage, know-how and expertise have made it the leading O&M company in France in the Utilities sector. It has been awarded ISO 9001 (quality management) OHSAS (health and safety) and ISO 14,001 certifications. EDF EN Services has become skilled in managing and operating many different types of turbines and inverters. This is a major asset, meaning that it can offer its clients unique operation-maintenance contracts that cover a range of different technologies. The work it does involves more than 240 operations, maintenance and engineering experts in France. EDF EN Services runs more than 3 GW of installed capacity (in 2015) in Europe across 200 wind turbines and photovoltaic facilities. It does this via strategic and industrial partnerships with a number of companies in the sector. Map: The worldwide group's O&M activity EDF EN Services has access to the expertise of EDF RE Services its US subsidiary which has been a leader in this particular field for more than 27 years in North America. In June 2015, EDF RE Services manages the maintenance requirements of MW of installed capacity via maintenance centres located as close as possible to the renewable energy facilities for which it is responsible,

6 6 together with an Operations Control Center based in San Diego, California. The subsidiary s O&M team has 650 full-time maintenance technicians and around 50 experts. EDF Energies Nouvelles, an integrated operator active across the entire value chain Since the creation of EDF EN Services in 2009, the EDF Energies Nouvelles Group has sought to diversify into incorporating operations and maintenance services to its activities. EDF Energies Nouvelles has expertise across the entire value chain of a renewable energies facility: 1/ DEVELOPMENT: land protection, environmental impact studies, project management (administrative, economic and technical coordination); 2/ CONSTRUCTION: engineering (electrical, acoustic, etc.), carrying out works (project management), supply, logistics; 3/ PRODUCTION AND SALE OF THE ASSET (development and sale of structured assets): asset management, relations with co-contractors, production tracking, development and sale of structured assets; 4/ O&M: remote supervision, predictive and scheduled maintenance, corrective maintenance, procurement / spare parts management, change of major components, data analysis, performance studies. There are two reasons for operations being internalised in this way: so as to manage the various different technologies that feature within the EDF Energies Nouvelles group in order to source a know-how and to guarantee energy production and ensure a maximum service life for wind turbines and solar power facilities; in accordance with the ICPE regulations; so as to share this unique expertise with owners of wind turbines and solar power facilities who are interested in entrusting a reliable operator with the O&M of their assets.

7 7 EDF Energies Nouvelles: a leader in the utilities sector in France for O&M services With a portfolio of 1.4 GW (end 2014) of wind turbines and photovoltaic facilities to run, EDF Energies Nouvelles has become (via EDF EN Services) the leading Utilities company on the French market for this particular activity. In 2015, EDF Energies Nouvelles had a 10% share of the renewable energies market in France. As far as the O&M market is concerned, EDF EN Services has: o a 14% share of the wind farm O&M market for facilities that are no longer under guarantee; o a 9,7% share of the photovoltaic solar power market. EDF EN Services which is able to take advantage of cutting-edge technologies so as to provide high-quality services is the only integrated operator to have a premium Operations Control Center in France. With more than 13,700 MW of installed capacity managed via O&M contracts throughout the world, the EDF Energies Nouvelles Group boasts nearly 1,250 experts in North America and Europe across its dedicated subsidiaries. EDF Energies Nouvelles is a leading provider for operations and maintenance services through its subsidiaries. The company encourages close collaboration between North America and Europe on engineering, information systems, security and technical facility operations. The Group does it by ensuring continuous discussion and by moving specialists around from subsidiary to subsidiary on a regular basis.

8 8 2 Condition and development potential of the O&M market In France, growth in the sector is driven by the construction of new renewable facilities. Construction is picking up pace across all sectors. The sector looks very healthy both from an energy and a social perspective; in particular, the growth in numbers of offshore wind farms means an increasing need for a qualified workforce based as close to the facilities as possible. The O&M sector therefore has considerable development potential. Throughout the world, O&M experts forecast 10% growth until 2017, boosted by: Improvements made with regard to ageing wind turbines or their replacement; the maturity of maintenance contracts of the first built facilities; Invitations to tender for offshore wind farms and solar power plants; The maintenance contracts for the first facilities built expiring; Governments desire to achieve energy independence and increasing numbers of wind power and solar power facilities in Europe. Wind power and offshore wind power in particular Wind power and offshore wind power in particular is one of the most dynamic energy sectors. As of the end of June 2015 France had 9,713 MW of installed capacity from onshore wind power, boasting the second greatest wind resources in Europe. France's government is currently aiming to achieve 6 GW of installed capacity generated by marine energies between now and 2020 the equivalent of 3.5% of France's electricity consumption. In order to try and meet this target, France has issued two invitations to tender for offshore wind farms, worth a total of 3,000 MW. EDF Energies Nouvelles submitted a proposal in response to the first of these invitations and won contracts for three offshore wind farm projects in These projects represent around 1,400 MW of capacity scheduled to be installed off France's coast between now and 2020.

9 9 These wind farms will be France's first offshore facilities. The challenge with which France is faced, is considerable: it has to adhere to the commitments it made by signing up to the Climate Plan, while at the same time creating a major industrial sector. As this new sector grows, new facilities will be built requiring more labour. The wind power sector has grown considerably throughout the world over the last few years: end 2014, there were more than GW of installed capacity, 133 GW of which was in Europe. The sector accounts for 86% of the Group's activities. Solar power Since 2003, photovoltaic solar power has been a second avenue of growth (after wind power) for EDF Energies Nouvelles as of the end 2014; France had 5,292 MWc of installed capacity generated by photovoltaic solar power. Energies Nouvelles has 869 MWc of installed capacity generated by photovoltaic solar power throughout the world.

10 10 3 Operation & Maintenance: a dynamic sector that creates wealth and jobs at local level Renewable energy facilities continue to be brought online, meaning an increase in the need for O&M personnel. In France, the number of O&M-dedicated staff working for EDF Energies Nouvelles increased from 50 in 2009 to 240 by the end of EDF EN Service recruits in France and at international level In France, 240 EDF EN Services employees (including 200 experts and technicians) are currently involved in operating and maintaining 367 wind and solar power facilities. Between now and 2018, EDF Energies Nouvelles will recruit 350 people, in order to completely internalise operations and maintenance activities for its future offshore wind farms. This will equate to around a hundred jobs for each of the three offshore sites that make up the consortium managed by EDF Energies Nouvelles. Furthermore, the Group plans to create a second Operations Control Center for all of its future European offshore wind farms. For some, this will involve jobs that are completely new to the Group. Now that it operates in ten countries, EDF Energies Nouvelles O&M activity is no longer limited to France. In Europe and North America between the end of 2011 and the end of 2015, the number of people employed by EDF Energies Nouvelles throughout the world in operations and maintenance increased by 57%. This pushed the total number of operations and maintenance employees up to more than 1,250, alongside the expansion of the US. portfolio and the creation of new subsidiaries in countries such as Belgium, Italy and United Kingdom.

11 11 Management and maintenance technician: a job of the future Their responsibilities Maintenance and control technicians are tasked with carrying out all the technical operations needed for the wind farms or solar power plants for which they are responsible to operate correctly. Their responsibilities involve: supervising activity and monitoring performance of facilities; controlling access to the renewable energy facilities and stations (24 hours a day, seven days a week on-call service: remotely starting equipment back up, managing relations with the network manager, carrying out fault analyses and diagnostics); optimally managing facilities, continually striving to improve energy output; carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance tasks (changing major components in the wind farms); ensuring that the facilities remain safe and secure (industrial risk management, safety visits). Management and maintenance technicians use cutting-edge equipment and a local service to perform their tasks: the Operations Control Center (at the forefront of technology) for remotely checking equipment, analysing data or helping teams out in the field; local maintenance centers which are always located near the facilities so that work can be carried out as quickly as possible, thus reducing production losses.

12 12 Expertise required The following expertise is required for this job: high-level expertise in mechanical and civil engineering, automated systems, composites and civil engineering; a sound knowledge of English; ability to carry out work at height and on both low- and high-voltage electrical systems; an occupational first-aid certificate; knowledge of and ability to apply quality, health, safety and environmental instructions; ability to draw up accurate reports of work carried out and components used. I get details of the alarms that have been triggered when a machine has developed a fault, and then I go off and repair it with my team mate. Then once we get back to the base, we fill out a technical work report. But in actual fact, not two days are the same. "What I find the most stimulating is the sheer breadth of the technologies involved everything from mechanics, automated systems and fibre optics to high-and lowvoltage electrical systems". Training for a qualified labour Numbers of renewable energy facilities are increasing at a fast rate. Sector professionals need qualified personnel for running and maintaining them. A number of training programmes have therefore been developed, particularly for facility maintenance. To become a maintenance technician, for example, basic training in electrical systems, mechanics and/or

13 13 hydraulic engineering is required. Electro-mechanical technicians or people accustomed to working on offshore platforms will be needed for both offshore wind farm projects. Training programmes delivered to meet these requirements are: Professional Baccalaureate in Electrical engineering; Professional Baccalaureate in Industrial Maintenance; Vocational training certificate (BTS) in Electrical engineering; Vocational training certificate (BTS) in Industrial Maintenance. To help young people, companies establish close links with educational centers in order to ensure that new training programmes meet their requirements as effectively as possible. For example, EDF Energies Nouvelles has entered into no fewer than 32 partnership agreements ( COMO or offshore wind farm operations & maintenance management degree, a partnership with the Le Mans Greta [adult education center], etc.) for the future Saint Nazaire offshore wind farm. And the consortium that EDF Energies Nouvelles leads works closely alongside national and local training bodies, as well as bodies involved in helping people get back onto the job market. This way, they can predict certain skills requirements and tailor the modules that they offer accordingly. For example, a revised vocational training programme in Maintenance has been introduced by the French National Education System - the "System Maintenance" programme, which also involves professionals from the wind power sector. Elsewhere, a "Jobs and Qualifications Campus" has been created focusing on Energies and energy efficiency" at the Descartes-Maupassant Lycée in Fécamp (with the support of the Rouen Education Authority and the Haute-Normandie region). And a national certification scheme was brought in last June. Internal training programmes: increasingly sophisticated expertise among EDF Energies Nouvelles O&M technicians EDF Energies Nouvelles recruits qualified personnel who then receive training on the continual basis at the Colombiers training center. In 2014, nearly 12% of the total wage bill went on training (by law, companies in France are only required to invest 0.9%).Employees receive training every year. These training programmes are updated every six months.

14 14 The Group's dedicated O&M training center provides EDF EN Services' European technicians with regular training. It does this through special training programmes, integrating feedback and examples of good practice. The subsidiary's internal teams are given training as a priority, but clients and partners may also receive it. The training policy is implemented starting from when employees are hired, and all of them follow an integration programme. This proactive approach encourages the development of an operations and maintenance culture that is shared across all sectors. Safety: always a major issue EDF EN Services is responsible for risk prevention and for ensuring the safety of its employees and subcontractors. A risk management programme highlights the commitment of the company's management and its employees for each activity. EDF EN Services defines and applies an SHEQ charter. Its purpose is to create a working environment that is safe and reliable, protecting people's health and preventing environmental pollution. Upstream, applying the charter involves risk prevention. To this end, EDF EN Services and EDF Renewable Services have developed a cross-subsidiary system for keeping an inventory of near-misses. Across the subsidiaries Europe and the US as a whole, there are around a hundred near-misses every month. The system provides a means of analysing each near-miss so that appropriate action plans can be developed.
