1 Dear Parent/Carer, Visual Art Extension Program Newsletter Term 1 Overview 2014 We have had a great start to the year in Visual Art Extension. Students have been focusing on their drawing techniques this term. Learning new techniques in school and from their after school art tutors. Year 9 and 10 students visited Rottnest Island for the first ever Art Camp. And year 8 students worked with a Professional Artist to design a new sculpture for the school. Students were also involved in community art projects relating to National Youth Week, designing promotional posters and creating a sketchbook as part of the KickstART festival. Recent Achievements Artist in Residence Last term the year 8 students had the privilege of working with a professional public sculptor Jason Hirst. Students have been collaborating with Jason to design a large scale artwork for the school. Together they developed themes and concepts to inspire the etchings that will embellish the sculpture. It will be interesting and exciting to see the new art form come to life. It will be fantastic to see our students artwork and ideas on pubic display to enjoy for many years to come. (Artwork by Saara Foo) The Premier s Visit Our school was the hosted the Inaugural Youth Leadership Forum which brought together four local high schools and eleven primary schools from the area. Attended by Premier Hon. Colin Barnett MLA and Liberal Member for Southern River, Mr Peter Abetz, an audience of over 140 students, parents and local school principals had the opportunity to hear from the leader of our State on the issues of leadership. The conference was held in the Da Vinci building where The Arts put on an exhibition for this special event. Visual Art Extension students worked hard in the weeks leading up to the event to have new artwork on display. The exhibition was filled with students work.

2 This term year 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to embark to Rottnest Island for the first ever Art Camp. Students enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Rottnest Island over three days on Art Camp this term. Students were excited to adventure onto the island, surrounded by beautiful beaches and friendly quokkas. Over the three days students were challenged with different sculpture, drawing and photography tasks. They enthusiastically engaged in each activity and produced some amazing artworks in the limited time. From large- scale sand sculptures of creatures coming out of the ocean, sketching the spectacular lighthouse structure, to drawing with sparklers at night. Students also learnt about the history of the island, the Indigenous Australians who once lived there and about the pioneers and prisoners who created the buildings in the main settlement. Looking over the clear blue water of The Basin, challenging their colour observational drawing skills. In the process being covered with green and blue pastels - staff included.(pictured right) Students particularly enjoyed working together in groups, to draw with sparkles in the dark and capture words and images. (Pictured below) On the last night of camp, students put on a mini exhibition, showing the group their chosen artwork from the activities completed. It was lovely to see what each student had created and achieved in such a short amount of time. Students had a great time exploring the island, enjoying the time with their peers and engaging in extended art activities. Overall the camp was a success and we hope to venture on another Art Camp in future.

3 Exhibitions, Competitions and Community Events Propel Youth Arts Sketchbook Project Every year Canning Vale College students enter the Sketchbook Project, which runs annually as part of the KickstART Festival in celebration for National Youth Week. This is a community event inviting young creative people aged 12 to 25 years, from all over WA to exhibit their artwork in a traveling exhibition. National Youth Week Students were also involved in a school community based competition relating to National Youth Week. The challenge being to create a promotional poster relating to the theme Be a Friend. All students engaged in the task enthusiastically and created beautiful posters for the school event. Congratulations to year 10 student Ariana Sangster for her winning entry which was used for all promotion of the school community youth event. Applicants are sent a free sketchbook by Propel Youth Arts, to fill with drawings and artwork of their choosing and then send it back. Propel then sets up exhibitions for the sketchbooks to travel all around metro and rural WA. This year CVC was sent an A4 sketchbook, students were given one page to decorate and embellish their liking. Using, coloured pencils, charcoal, fine liners, inks and paints, students have created a beautiful collection of work to share with the public of WA once more. Future Competition: Black Swan Portraiture Prize Students that have been working with portraiture in school (or at home in their own time) should work towards this Art Prize! (Artwork by Kate Denteith) The 2014 Black Swan Prize for Youth empowers school students aged to take their art outside the school environment and to exhibit alongside some of the most talented artists in Australia. 4 Art Classes In School Art In school Art classes focused on honing and up skilling students drawing techniques. Students created small and large scale drawings of still life, skulls, taxidermied animals, balloon animals, portraiture and colour theory. Many of these drawings were on display for the Premier s visit. Artwork By Ayesha Limb Year 8s, have been studying skulls of different animals, building their observational sketches and understanding of tone and form in a series of drawings. Year 9s, have been busy working on large scale drawings in chalks and charcoal. Focusing on still life, bright coloured balloon animals, and rustic skulls. Year 10s, have been focusing their attention on portraiture, drawing student and teacher life models. Progressing from grey scale charcoal to coloured pastel, learning the beginnings of colour theory, practicing by drawing different landscapes. After School Art Yrs 8s worked with myself (Miss Eve), I introduced students to textured observational drawing. Students studied taxidermied Native Australian animals before working with Professional Artist Jason Hirst in designing the new public artwork for the school which will appear later on in the year. Students worked well together brainstorming and drawing designs for the permanent artwork. It will be exciting to see the sculpture later on in the year. Yr 9s worked with Tutor Bryony Crawford who is a Lecturer at the Central Institute of Technology. Bryony introduced the students to observational colour drawing using large scale animal balloons for students to draw from. She also introduced portraiture, teaching new techniques how to sketch and grid portraits. Students learnt a lot form these processes, proven in their self portraits all looking fantastic. Artwork by Nicholas Subianto Y10s worked with tutor Magda Joubert who is a Lecturer at the Central Institute of Technology. Magda introduced a wide variety of new drawing techniques, bringing in different objects and materials for students. Experimenting and producing many drawings using frottage, ink and bleach, and creating life size self portraits. Artwork by Ariana Sangster and Darren Chan

5 This Term This term we will be starting off by focusing on Rottnest, using the photos students took as inspiration for projects. This gives all students the chance to get to know the beautiful island and to engage in extended activities and projects. Students will be introduced to new painting and sculpture techniques. After School Art students will have three studio classes to choose from this term: Photography, Painting and Sculpture. It will be interesting to see what students create over the term in their selected area. Year 6 and 7 Testing This term applications and testing occur for year 6 and 7 students for Applications close on the 9 th of May and testing will be held in the middle of this term. Students will be asked to perform art making tasks and sit a portfolio interview to gain entry into the program.
