Prep Indonesia This term students will develop a range of skills while manipulating two and three-dimensional materials to create series of artworks based on studies of art in Indonesia. The focus for this term is developing student s fine motor skills when using pencils, scissors and paintbrushes. Students will be introduced to the art elements of line, shape and space. In the first project students will explore textiles. They will make a pattern inspired by Indonesian batik using tie-dye and glue batik techniques on calico fabric. They will learn how to repeat shapes and lines to make a pattern. Student s textile work will be sewed together into a class mural. In the next project students will draw and paint their first landscape inspired by photos of Indonesia. They will use acrylic paint to make a horizon line; they will explore texture when they paint the sky, ground and water. They will cut and arrange a pagoda style temple onto the background Students will listen to cultural stories about dragons. They will look at traditional representations of dragons. They will explore the use of shape and line in these drawings and sculptures. They will use scratch art plates to make their dragon, repeating lines and shapes to make scales and the interesting textures on the surface of the plate. In their final project for the term, students will investigate traditional shadow puppet theatre. They will look at different characters. These puppets, called Wayang Kulit, are from the Indonesian island of Java. Shadow puppets are popular all over Asia. These puppets are used to tell story of the Ramayana - an epic tale from India, which is more than 2000 years old. They will collage and decorate their own shadow puppet based these traditional characters.

YEAR 1 Magic bush Students will explore early Australian landscape paintings when they make a series of two-dimensional artworks inspired by the Australian bush. Students will investigate texture, colour and shape when drawing, painting, and making collages. In the first project, students will make collage based on Frederick McCubbin's painting "The lost child". They will look at this famous painting and discuss the feelings this painting evokes. They recreate the pose of the child in a photo shoot of each other in the schoolyard. They will print and collage these photos onto a tissue paper collage of the bush. They will handcolour their photos to connect with the background composition. In the next project, students will explore monochromatic colour, when they make paper mosaic composition of trees. They will draw a series of vertical lines on coloured paper. They will outline these in black texta. They will cut and arrange paper mosaics into these tree forms paying attention to colour relationships. Students will develop their painting skills in the final project. They will learn to mix secondary colours and tint colours with white paint. Inspired by Australian impressionistic landscapes, students will layer colour using short brushstrokes. They will explore the vibrancy of the colours in these examples and apply these ideas in their own design.

YEAR 2 Ned Kelly This Term students will develop a range of skills while manipulating two and three- dimensional materials to create series of artworks inspired by Sidney Nolan s paintings of Ned Kelly. The will read a short narrative text about the bushranger in class. In the first project, they will improve their drawing skills, when they make a drawing of Ned Kelly based on these paintings. They will explore colour relationships when they make a drawing in pencil texta and charcoal and another composition using oil pastel and ink wash for the background. In the next project, students will use clay and slab building techniques to make a portrait of Ned Kelly s Head armor. They will learn to roll, cut the clay and form it into a cylinder shape. They will use mesh to cast texture onto their clay surface. They will paint their clay silver and use charcoal and gloss to make a burnt metal effect. In the final project, students will make a wanted poster. They will learn to age paper using staining techniques. They will explore taking a self- portrait using photobooth. They will learn to edit their photo and make the image black and white. They will add their photo to their wanted poster.

YEAR 3 Antarctica The focus on the Visual and performing art programs this term, will be developing artworks and animations around the theme of Antarctica for Arts Night in Term 4. Linking with our overall theme for the Arts Night Belonging, students have been exploring sustainability and the importance of preserving our environment. Students will all make two landscapes projects using printmaking and painting techniques. Students will select some of these as the backgrounds for their animation projects. In the first project, students will explore a series of prints by Bea Maddock when she travelled to Antarctica. They will use tissue paper and collage techniques for the basis of their print; they will draw their iceberg landscape on foam and make a print on the collage using white ink. In the next project, students will look at watercolour paintings by David McEown, they will learn to layer and apply paint to create simple and dynamic painting of Antarctica inspired by photos. Small groups of students will work together to develop their animations. They will write the stories and music for their animations in performing arts. In Visual Arts, students will use an Animation app on the I Pads and use stylus pens to draw on the program. They will be supported to delegate different roles to make the film in their team framework. This project integrates student learning in both Visual and performing Arts and will be ongoing in Terms 2 and 3..

Year 4 Art Program Sumatran Rainforest The focus on the Visual and performing art programs this term, will be developing artworks and animations around the theme of Sumatran Rainforest for Arts Night in Term 4. Linking with our overall theme for the Arts Night Belonging, students have been exploring sustainability and the importance of preserving our environment. Students will all make a series of two- dimensional artworks using collage and pastel techniques. Students will select some of these as the backgrounds for their animation projects. In the first project, students will explore a series of photos of the rainforest. They will use tissue paper and collage techniques for the basis of their landscape. In the next project, students will design and make a print of a Sumatran tiger. They will handcolour these prints. Small groups of students will work together to develop their animations. They will write the stories and music for their animations in performing arts. In Visual Arts, students will use an Animation app on the I Pads and use stylus pens to draw on the program. They will be supported to delegate different roles to make the film in their team framework. This project integrates student learning in both Visual and performing Arts and will be ongoing in Terms 2 and 3.

Year 5/6 Rock band Design This term students will explore graphic design when they make logos, T-shirts and CD covers for their Rock bands that have been formed in the music program as a feature for Arts Night in Term 4. In order to convey this information well, graphic designers need to attract their intended audience to their designs. Visual communicators are primarily concerned with conveying information through images (pictures and letterform). Students will work in small groups to develop their logo and visual products. They will learn how to use design elements and principals to attract the viewer s attention. They will explore concepts such as composition, figure/ground, balance, contrast, cropping, scale, proportion and pattern. They will be able to select traditional drawing and painting techniques and or IPAD apps and other digital platforms to make graphic designs to promote their Rock Band.
