1 NRK DIGITAL MUSIC ARCHIVE (DMA) NRK has launched a new and enhanced version of their Digital Music Archive - DMA. The extended version is delivered by Reply. SCENARIO NRK is a Norwegian Broadcaster and the main public station in Norway, with 3 TV channels, 4 national FM-channels and several DAB and Internet channels. NRK is in a process of converging all archives digitally in order to make all legacies easily available for digital files based radio and TV production. One of their major areas of commitment the last years has been to create a digital archive for commercial music. NRK has finalized the ingestion of CDs, all stored in linear format with scanned images of front and back of the cover and with prelistening files in different formats, WMA, mp3, AAC. The next step is to digitalize all vinyl acquired between 1970 and THE PRODUCT There are three different modules of the DMA system: a Media Asset Management (MAM) system, an archivist module for the documentarists and a web interface for the journalists. The MAM system, delivered by Reply, takes care of the transcoding, the storing and organizes the workflow and job lists for ingest and digitalization. Reply Reply has also delivered the sophisticated catalogue and archivist module where the documentarists are doing registration of new entries using all kind of available electronic information from the CDs and external sources in addition to replenish metadata manually and performing quality check in order to keep a high standard on the metadata. The archivist tool has huge possibilities for copying and linking information, so the manpower needed for registrations has decreased. The tool has an integrated name manager with which the documentarists can do corrections of multiple names and name variants at the same time, including aliases with tracks and

Thirdly the archivist module has an import module where essences and metadata from labels and other sources are controlled, corrected and enhanced in a semi-automatic process. The third module is the web interface used by the journalist. This module gives the journalists unlimited possibilities for searching, browsing, navigating and pre-listening. The essence is presented in different windows representing different objects like tracks, albums, collections, musical works, names and biographies. The web interface includes the possibility of storing searches, keeping lists of your own favorites and, by using the ordering page, the user can download material to any production system or other receivers. DMA IN NRK. In NRK essence from DMA is distributed to the DigAS system from David, to ProTools, Quantel, WhatsOn from MediaGenix and FinalCutPro. The output from DMA goes through a middleware based on EBU standards which handles the delivery of right audio format and requested metadata to all systems. The quality of the metadata delivered from DMA has simplified the music reporting and enhanced the quality of information available on Internet-radio. In addition the DMA system has a build in fingerprint generator that makes a fingerprint of all the tracks transferred to the storage. The fingerprint is used to recognize the music after broadcast and an automatic music report is created, nearly 100% automated without manpower from journalists. The generated reports are used to fulfill the requirements of rights organizations and labels. BOOKLETS. With a new add-on tool by Reply NRK has started to scan all booklets belonging to their CD collection. The booklets are stored as single images and as pdf files. The pdf file is available both in the archivist module, the journalist module and through the export to production systems or other receivers. The pdf files are searchable within the document; instead the content of the booklets is searchable across the whole catalogue, also as full-text retrieval after having recognized via OCR. When the booklets are scanned the CD-collection is removed from NRK and stored in the mountains in the northern part of Norway, under controllable conditions managed by the Norwegian State Library. 3 3 NRK DIGITAL MUSIC ARCHIVE (DMA) ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS The commercial subsidiary of NRK, launched a web site where people can download commercial music. The site gives the possibility to purchase and download commercial music, and in addition it offers the download of NRK s own productions, the purchase of spin off effects, the availability of playlists, news, sports, weather forecasts and program schedules and articles related to the program. The download of music is done in cooperation with the rights organizations and the music labels. THE PROJECT In this project standard functionalities are mixed with the extended search possibilities built into the DMA archive, based on specifications written by trained and experienced archivists and users, supplied by Reply. The services offered go beyond what is known today from similar sites as if you like this you will also like that or most downloaded lately. This installation does deeper analyses of the music and the need of the customers and combines this using the latest of semantic technology. Such features offer a variety of music that no other download site can offer; it is therefore important for the music industry, but also for NRK to handle the cultural heritage of Norway and to create public station responsible for the culture offer to the public. Music pre-listening is possible both by mobile phones and through Internet. Purchase and download of music include not only music, but also extended information about the records, additional material, images and an offer of DVDs and books. TARGET ARCHITECTURE NRK MUSIC SHOP

4 4 NRK DIGITAL MUSIC ARCHIVE (DMA) For a period, NRK has run its digital media and music archive - DMA in order to serve internal production systems with commercial music, essence and metadata. Now the time has come to complete the collection when it comes to national music. To fulfill this ambitious task NRK has made a partnership with the National Library of Norway, in order to coordinate and share resources for this huge lift for Norwegian culture. The technical solution for ingest, digitalization, transcoding, storage, exchange of material and workflow design is delivered by Reply in collaboration with NRK and the National Library. THE AGREEMENT The job to be done was huge and to reach this goal NRK and the National Library have agreed upon the following allocation of tasks: NRK receives all new releases online from the labels. When file based delivery can t be offered NRK does ingest. All the material is stored in the Digital Media & Music Archive in NRK. All Norwegian music is automatically copied to the National Library. NRK does the digitalization of the vinyl. National Library does the digitalization of master tapes, music cassettes and shellacs. NRK and the National Library share the work of scanning booklets, spindles and covers. National library has the responsibility for storing the physical CD-collection. THE PROJECT The DMA is expanded with additional requirements by the National Library. Exchange of metadata is bi-directional in XML format. Exchange of essence is bidirectional. Global metadata e.g. metadata delivered from the labels are available for the public through portals run by the national Library and other institutions. Some additional metadata, mainly created by NRK, are only available for research inside the National Library. 5 5 NRK DIGITAL MUSIC ARCHIVE (DMA) Rockheim is the official Norwegian Pop and Rock museum, with a physical adventure center, a web based encyclopedia for Norwegian pop- and rock music and a virtual museum. In order to have continually access to all Norwegian pop and rock music, from the past and in the future, Rockheim has chosen NRK as their supplier of music on-line, whether its audio or video. The installation is delivered by Reply, the same supplier that has developed the digital music & media archive in NRK. Mediacenter Rockheim Museum THE PROJECT The digital music archive in NRK is the main storage. All new releases are either imported as digital files from the labels or ingested by NRK into this MAM system. Metadata are handled by the documentarists of NRK. A service provider in Norway is hosting a similar system to the DMA system in NRK, this installation is used by Rockheim. An automatic process copies all Norwegian popand rock music from NRK MAM-system to Rockheim, making audio, video, images, booklets and metadata available for the services by Rockheim. In addition to commercial music delivered by NRK, the Rockheim MAM system handle Rockheim s own recordings, non commercial videos, images, documents and posters. The custodies of Rockheim can replenish and change the metadata in the Rockheim system. The system is also responsible for the feeding of the real and virtual museum thus delivering audio and video content in the right format to large video screens and professional audio systems.
