3 Introduction to the faculty Your chosen course Faculty of Engineering and Informatics BSc (Hons) in Web Design and Technology The Faculty of Engineering and Informatics delivers an exciting mix of core engineering disciplines and creative technologies that complement each other by delivering innovative solutions with high sector impact to the challenges posed by industry, the environment, and health and wellbeing agendas. We provide our students with a wide range of expertise and opportunity that individuals can tailor to their particular strengths. Internet and digital media activities are of growing importance in the UK and internationally, both creatively, economically and socially. Graduates who can demonstrate technical knowledge, creative skills and a critical understanding of the workings of the new media industries are in demand. Your studies at Bradford will help equip you for a career in this fast-moving area. Facilities The School of Media, Design and Technology prides itself on the excellent facilities that it has to offer for both students and staff. We have a dedicated technical support team who are available to offer help and support, as well as managing the equipment loans desk. Research We place emphasis on both teaching and research. We continue to make an impact with our international research programmes in imaging, multimedia computing, animation, virtual reality, distributed virtual environments, visualisation, digital video, human-computer interaction, telecommunications and artificial intelligence. Programme overview Web Design and Technology involves the production of webbased projects on an individual and group basis. This programme covers browser and server technology, wired and wireless network systems and graphic design for various platforms. Bradford was one of the first universities that understood the coming of the digital age and to provide courses which equipped students with the skills and knowledge to take advantage of the World Wide Web. During your time here you will have 94% of our 2013 Media graduates (most recent data) found employment or went on to further study within six months of graduating access to specialist lab facilities equipped with high-spec dual monitor and dual boot Linux and Windows machines and dedicated technicians. You will be able to produce state-of-theart web-based applications for desktop and handheld devices. You will examine the technology, sociocultural and content-related issues concerning the current state and the future of the internet and competing delivery systems, whilst working in teams on multi-platform projects. This degree will develop your media and technical expertise, give you the ability to critically reflect, and allow you to develop a wealth of transferable skills in teamwork, presentation and project management. Special features This programme is accredited by Creative Skillset, ensuring that it is work-based and industryrelevant. Industry professionals make regular inputs into this course. 4 Your chosen course BSc (Hons) in Web Design and Technology modules This degree will empower you to develop and produce a range of creative audio-visual media, but with specialisation in the production of websites. There is an emphasis on content creation as we help you to build a strong portfolio of work. Your chosen specialisms will determine which modules are core and which are optional. The University has a dedicated Careers Hub to help develop and shape your career ambitions and look forward to fantastic employment prospects. 100% of our students gain exposure to the world of work. Flexible study You can also choose to take the degree over three continuous years or over four years with a year of practical work experience. Wherever possible, we highly recommend you take the opportunity to undertake a year in industry. This is a period of work experience (generally paid) of usually up to one year, normally carried out in the third year of a four-year degree. Work experience such as this can have a massive impact on your employability when graduating. Industry experience The School of Media, Design and Technology has an excellent network of partner organisations that offer experience including the BBC, the National Media Museum and UNESCO City of Film. Our in-house non-profit company, the Digital Media Working Academy, pays students to work on live professional projects; this gives you the experience to get that first leg onto the professional ladder and build your portfolio. International study opportunities As a Bradford student you ll join a truly international learning environment, with students and staff from over 70 countries worldwide. We also encourage international exchange, and there is the opportunity for our students to broaden their knowledge by studying abroad at one of our partner institutions. You may combine your studies at Bradford with a semester or year in Europe, Canada, Australia, North America or Hong Kong following equivalent courses to our own. 6 Finances Fees and financial support Bradford is consistently cited as one of the least expensive UK cities for students to live in by The Times Good University Guide. We continue to offer an affordable environment compared with other major universities, while private accommodation in the city also offers good value for money. Our fees Our annual Tuition Fees for 2015/16 for all Home (UK-based) and EU students are listed below, but remember if you are going to university for the first time you don t have to pay these fees upfront. Some courses also have additional costs for field trips or equipment. These will be indicated on our website. Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans can help towards the cost of your degree in the short term, and you might be eligible to receive financial help either with a Government grant or one of our many University of Bradford scholarships. Financial support UK students Most students living in England can apply for Government help towards the cost of their education at the University of Bradford. This might be through a repayable, low-interest Tuition Fee or Maintenance Loan, or through a non-repayable Maintenance Grant. Students from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have different arrangements, and should contact the relevant Student Finance body. Grants are also available for students who have children and childcare costs, as well as those with adult dependants and disabled students. Student loan debt has no impact whatsoever on your credit rating. Will I be charged interest on my loans? Yes, interest is now charged on student loans but it is much lower than interest rates charged on commercial loans. Do I have to pay my Tuition Fee Loan and my Maintenance Loan back separately? No, your loan repayments for fees and living costs are rolled into one. When do I have to start paying my loans back? You only start paying back your loans once you ve left university and are earning over 21,000. What if I m not earning over 21,000? If your income falls below 21,000, your repayments will be suspended. Will my loan payments be taken from my bank account? No, your payments will be deducted straight from your salary through the tax system. Will taking out a student loan leave me in debt for life? No, if you have not repaid your loan within 30 years then the remainder will be written off. Investing in scholarships The University of Bradford offers a wide range of financial help to assist you on your university journey, and invests over 3m annually in bursaries and scholarships. Every year we award numerous non-repayable scholarships to UK, EU and international students on the basis of academic excellence, personal circumstances or economic hardship. We are currently developing our Scholarship Programme for the 2015 admissions cycle, so please keep checking our website for the most up-to-date information How we can help In 2015, the University will be offering cash scholarships to Home and EU students who achieve ABB in their A levels or equivalent (a list of equivalent courses and grades is on our website). Students get 2,000 in year one and 1,500 in subsequent years, subject to progressing with an average of 60% or over each year. Student loan repayments have no impact on your credit rating
