Harold Wilson, the then British Prime Minister, became our first Chancellor and the University began to grow steadily. 4 Introduction Your course Faculty of Engineering and Informatics BSc (Hons) in Business Computing The Faculty of Engineering & Informatics delivers an exciting mix of core engineering disciplines and creative technologies that complement each other by delivering innovative solutions with high sector impact to the challenges posed by industry, the environment, and health and wellbeing agendas. We provide our students with a wide range of expertise and opportunities that individuals can tailor to their particular strengths. Business Computing aims to produce graduates who can become hybrid managers having both computing and management skills. Your time is divided between modern business and management skills and the fundamentals of computing. Specialised modules each year in business and management are provided at the University s prestigious School of Management. Facilities The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science prides itself on the excellent facilities we have to offer for both students and staff. As well as general computing labs, we offer specialist labs for computer games, graphics programming, video editing, design and robotics. Overall we have over 200 computers available for student use and a number of wireless hotspots to enable students with laptops to access the campus network. We have a wide range of Electrical Engineering and Electronics laboratories for student use, including a Surface Mount Lab, Power and Machines Lab, PCB Fabrication workshop, Robotics Lab and more. We also have dedicated research laboratories for Antennas, Communications Systems, Energy Research and Future Ubiquitous Networks. We have a dedicated technical support team who are available to offer help and support, as well as managing the equipment for students to loan for free. Ever wanted to get more involved with technology? We are home to the first ever British Computer Society Student Chapter: Pi Soc. Research We place emphasis on both teaching and research. We have particular research strengths in: Artificial Intelligence Applied Mathematics Cyber Security Electronics, Communications and Information Systems Engineering Energy and Smart Grid Research Future Ubiquitous Networks Propagation and Computational Electromagnetics Visual Computing Course overview Computing and Management are constantly changing disciplines as technologies evolve and new programming languages emerge. However the underlying theory and principles do not change rapidly. You will study these fundamentals and learn how to apply them to the analysis of problems and how to plan, implement and evaluate the solutions. In particular you will be able to apply your computing knowledge to the study and solution of problems in a business environment. 89% of our 2014 Computing graduates (most recent data) found employment or went on to further study within six months of graduating A range of computing and management option modules allow you to specialise in areas of particular interest to you and you will also undertake an individual computing project in the final year that can be related to management or business. Our programme will equip you with high-level computing and business skills so you can take up computing management, administration and analysis posts in any sector of industry and commerce. Special features This course is accredited by The Chartered Institute for IT (BCS). You will have access to our dedicated facilities equipped with high-spec dual monitor and dual boot Linux and Windows machines

5 The average starting salary for our 2014 Computing graduates (most recent data) was 19,399 Meet your lecturers You will be taught by computing and management practitioners and researchers who are experts in their field. Below are some of the people who will be teaching you. Industry placement You can choose to take the degree over three continuous years or over four years with a year of practical work experience. Wherever possible we highly recommend you take the opportunity to undertake a year in industry. This is a period of work experience (generally paid) of usually up to one year, normally carried out in the third year of a four year degree. Work experience such as this can have a massive impact on your employability when graduating. Maximising your employability Our syllabus is focused around maximising the employability of our students. The University has a dedicated Careers Development Service to help develop and shape your career ambitions as well as look forward to fantastic employment prospects on graduation. 100% of our students gain exposure to the world of work throughout their undergraduate studies. Student community The School s academic computing society, Pi Soc, is a great way for students to share ideas, knowledge and have fun! The society meets twice a week to work on computing projects and develop their skills across all years of study. They also work in teams to compete at hackathons and arrange a variety of socials. We d encourage you to join Pi Soc when you start as it has become a great aspect to many students University experience. International study opportunities As a Bradford student you ll join a truly international learning environment, with students and staff from over 70 countries worldwide. We also encourage international exchange and there is the opportunity for our students to broaden their knowledge by studying abroad at one of our partner institutions. You may combine your studies at Bradford with a semester or year in Europe, Canada, Australia, North America or Hong Kong following equivalent courses to our own. DAVE FORBES SENIOR LECTURER IN COMPUTING Dave holds an MPhil from the University of Bradford and a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds. His research interests are in the design of coding techniques for nano molecular communications, data mining, big data and biological networks. Dave will be teaching you Fundamentals of Internet Technology in Year One. DR PAUL TRUNDLE LECTURER IN COMPUTING Paul holds a Bachelor s degree and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Bradford. His research interests include data mining, machine learning and artificial intelligence including applications in gaming. Paul will be teaching you Software Development in Year One. As admissions tutor, Paul enjoys meeting and welcoming new students each year. LORNA ARMITAGE LECTURER IN COMPUTING After graduating from the University of Bradford, training and working as a teacher in local schools, Lorna joined the Computer Science department five years ago as a lecturer in Computing. She is currently in the process of completing her PhD dissertation, exploring why social engineering attacks are so successful. Her research interests include cybersecurity, specifically the human element within security and women in technology. Lorna will be teaching you the Developing Professional Skills module in Year One

We continue to offer advice and assistance to our students and an affordable environment compared with other major universities, while private accommodation in the city also offers good value for money. Our fees Our annual Tuition Fees for 2016/17 for all Home (UK-based) and EU students are listed below, but remember if you are going to university for the first time you don t have to pay these fees upfront. Some courses also have additional costs for field trips or equipment. These will be indicated on our website. Our 2016/17 academic fees Support from the University Over 4m invested in scholarships every year The University of Bradford offers a wide range of financial help to assist you on your university journey, and invests over 4m annually in a range of support packages for students from all backgrounds. Support from the Government Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans can help towards the cost of your degree in the short term, and you might be eligible to receive other financial help.
