2014 THE MOST EXCITING YEAR IN BATH SPA UNIVERSITY S HISTORY Be part of it

2014 will be one of the most significant years for students in the University s entire 160 year history. A complete redevelopment of the main Newton Park campus providing world-beating facilities for students and 500 new top quality student residences on site A superb new creative enterprise campus in Wiltshire alongside a major enterprise park housing leading global companies, with both on-the-spot and wider industry placement opportunities A new specialist Education Institute in Wiltshire providing the highest rated teacher training in the country, and leading the way in educational policy and practice development An innovative model of undergraduate study in the form of new four-year Integrated Masters courses for high achieving students in subjects leading to graduate careers in the creative industries New partnerships with universities and colleges around the world providing unprecedented opportunities for international student exchanges and collaborative study The chance to learn from newly-appointed worldleading authorities in different academic disciplines including Professors Gavin Turk, Dexter Dalwood, David Almond, Naomi Alderman, Kate Pullinger, Philip Hensher, Joe Duddell

New courses Bath Spa University is offering new Integrated Masters courses in creative subjects from September Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors Integrated Masters Commercial Music Integrated Masters Creative Technology and Enterprise Integrated Masters Integrated Master programmes These are four year courses incorporating an undergraduate degree leading directly to a Masters qualification. They re an attractive option because of the additional benefits a postgraduate qualification offers to students: improved job prospects and career opportunities, and the opportunity for more in-depth academic study and research. The Masters programme provides a depth of specialist knowledge at Masters level which is highly valued by employers. If you change your mind at the end of the 3 year degree and didn t want to continue onto the fourth year, you d simply stop after the three years with a BA qualification. There s no obligation to take the fourth year. The advantages of following this study pattern are: students are eligible for a fee loan and maintenance loan for all four years of study (stand-alone Masters courses are not eligible for government funding, which means that many students can t afford them) students are guaranteed study at Masters level (many postgraduate programmes are competitive to get onto) the fourth year of the course (the Masters year) is an intensive placement-based year making students highly employable when they graduate.

Textile design for fashion and interiors The Integrated Masters in Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors (MA) develops your individual approach to becoming a professional design practitioner. You will explore your creativity and learn skills in the field of textiles, whilst preparing for professional practice by developing your entrepreneurial abilities and industry awareness. Integrated Masters ucas code: W231 Location: Sion Hill campus Tuition fee (2013): 9,000 per year (subject to annual inflationary increase) entry Requirements: Grade ABB or equivalent More information: About the course Students will be globally aware, and there are trips to New York, Tokyo, Eindhoven and Paris, along with visits to specialist studios, trade fairs, exhibitions, museums and student exchanges. You will engage with industry professionals through a visiting lecture programme, leading master-classes and workshop activities. The course is supported by creative drawing workshops and underpinned with comprehensive knowledge of digital technologies. It has a strong studio culture in which students are inspired to express their personal direction. Course structure The first two years of this four year course mirror our successful BA (Hons) Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors. In the third year Integrated Masters students undertake two Level 7 (Masters) modules, and in the final year work entirely at Masters level, alongside other MA Design programmes. In Level 7 modules students develop the entrepreneurial abilities and communication skills essential to professional practitioners. Students engage in the complexities of combining creative innovation and project management, taking initial ideas through to final product, and communicating the outcome through marketing and presentation. Year 1 In Year 1 you start to cultivate your observation, thinking and drawing skills into your individual style. You begin to explore the field of textile design and its contextual framework. You learn skills in understanding colour, fabric, yarns, materials and dyeing. Supporting textile design, you engage in basic pattern cutting, sewing construction and digital design applications. Taught techniques in embroidery, print, knit and weave provide the foundation to your design development. Year 2 In Year 2 you start to explore your potential focus engaging with modules as a textile designer for either fashion or interiors, and begin committing to areas of textile specialisms. Your facility for thinking, writing and analysing is expanded through professional and contextual studies. To establish an understanding of your style and direction, you tackle a combination of projects looking at advancing textile techniques and understanding your career options; these include competitions, live briefs and exhibitions. Year 3 In Year 3 you undertake a dissertation and state your identity as a textile designer through an initial exploratory personal studio module. The professional context module leads up to the Level 7 modules. The Masters modules require that you begin to explore research methods for your Audience and Context to underpin the establishment of a Textile Design practice. Year 4 Year 4 sees you continuing to advance your studio practice, while defining your audience through market research, entrepreneurship, business development and promotional skills. Your study concludes with a Final Masters Project demonstrating your ability as a professional Textile Designer.

Commercial Music This four year course in popular music allows you to specialise in Years 3 and 4 at the cutting edge of your field so that you then graduate with an MA. Integrated Masters ucas code: W385 Location: Newton Park campus Tuition fee (2013): 9,000 per year (subject to annual inflationary increase) entry Requirements: Grade ABB or equivalent More information: About the course You choose one of four specialisms within Commercial Music to study at Masters level (you will make this decision at the end of your second year). The specialist areas are: Songwriting Music production Music business The course is aimed at students with the equivalent of ABB or higher at L3, along with a high level of performance or composing skill (assessed via MP3s of your three best original tracks); music technology experience; and performance experience. Course structure Year 1 In your first year you write songs, you write journalistic and promotional material (Creative and Applied Writing) and you learn how to produce and develop your material in the recording studio (Audio Production and The Music Workstation). Meanwhile you work towards live showcase events in the Performance module. Year 2 In your second year, you take Image and Product where you write, produce, and record your own original material in our recording studios. You explore semiotics, marketing, cultural theory, photography and advertising, and you develop an understanding of branding in a crowded marketplace. Music Business Skills introduces you to the 3.8 billion UK music business (2011 figures) and our Music Think Tank lecture series features keynote speakers from the music business who deliver fresh insight into contemporary practice. In Staging, Video and Live you design and edit your own promotional video to create your internet presence for Promotion and Tour. Using your website and audio-visual content as a promotional launch pad, you then set up your own national tour.

Year 3 In your third year you start to develop your specialism. The Portfolio sees you deepening your songwriting, performance and production skills. In Creative Enterprise students work in projects to design, fund and launch an innovative music product or service. All students write business plans and then implement their projects in the real world. Many graduates have continued successful business projects they started at university beyond graduation. In your skills module you further your specialism at a higher level. You also develop research skills at Masters level in Context and Methodology. Year 4 Your fourth year sees you continuing to hone your specialist skills whilst also devising collaborative projects in the Collaboration module. You finally bring everything together in the Major Project module, which could involve creating an album or a major live event or a business project.

Creative technology and enterprise Creative Technology and Enterprise (CTE) aims to prepare students for a fast-changing world of digital creativity and innovation. Integrated Masters ucas code: W901 Location: Newton Park campus Tuition fee (2013): 9,000 per year (subject to annual inflationary increase) entry Requirements: Grade ABB or equivalent More information: About the course You will work flexibly across traditional discipline specialisms, reflecting the requirements of the digital economy for people who are equipped with creative ideas, entrepreneurial skills and technological knowledge. 10 Campus developments Be the first students to benefit from our amazing campus development! By spring 2014 our new building at the Newton Park campus will be completed transforming facilities for students. The campus is already stunning, with medieval buildings such as the Castle and Gatehouse, in a landscaped parkland setting complete with its own lake. But from 2014 you will be able to benefit from magnificent, ultramodern space and facilities too. This is the most significant campus development for decades, and is the first part of a 70 million development. It will provide magnificent, ultra-modern space and facilities alongside the historic buildings for which the campus is so well-known a unique blend of modernity and history. Sion Hill is our specialist art and design campus, and already boasts some of the most modern facilities for art and design in the country. The new building As well as state-of-the-art teaching facilities, digital space and a café, the new academic building will include approximately 1,800 square metres of Learning Commons which comprises a range of open-access, technology-enabled study space, social learning space and bookable group working rooms. A superb new digital space will provide the best resources for teaching digital media-related courses in the south-west, equal to anything found at cutting-edge commercial organisations and broadcast companies. New halls of residence The second phase of the major campus development provides another major boost for students joining us in 2014 the addition of 550 new en-suite study bedrooms at Newton Park. The new student residential accommodation will consist of individual houses for up to ten students. Each house will include a shared kitchen/living space and

en-suite bedrooms fitted to a very high standard. They will be situated in an attractive courtyard setting at the top of the campus near to the Students Union facilities, providing an excellent campus community living experience.
