The seminar is open to all reserve and active duty officers up to the rank of Major. Please encourage your junior reserve and active duty officers to participate. 3 Agenda (tentative) The seminar will focus on introducing junior reserve officers from NATO and PfP countries to the basics of NATO and international leadership. Seminar Primary Objective: Aim of the seminar is to assist in integration of YROs from NATO/PfP nations into a coalition environment. The seminar contributes to development of knowledge of NATO/CIOR structure and mission as well as leadership skills. It provides initial international/coalition experience for participants and increases awareness of alliance security issues. This year the focus will be on cross-cultural communication. 4 Friday, 17 April Seminar Day Breakfast Warm up and introduction day program YROC Seminar Bloc III (3 h) - Use of interpreter (1.5h): o Type of interpreters, type of interpretations, conduct of mission, limitations and common mistakes made by interpreters. PE: Introduction to leadership styles - Cross-Cultural Communication Principles and Rapport Building (1.5h) o Determine VBBNs for communicants, account for perception factors, determine where the cultures collide, o determine the meaning of nonverbal and verbal cues, Essential components of Rapport and Key techniques (including 15 min coffee break) Lunch Host nation Seminar Bloc IV (4 h) - Influences on Culture (1h) o Factors of influence, impact of the following factors: Geography, History, Religion, Economics, Social. - Practical Exercise (1h) - Negotiation strategy (1.5h) o Negotiation approaches, define your BATNA, ZOPA o negotiation styles and KLE prep (including 30 min coffee break) 1800-open end Dinner Host nation PAGE 4 of 5

5 Saturday, 18 April Seminar Day Breakfast Host nation Warm up/admin/outprocessing Host nation Seminar Bloc V (2 h) - Negotiation Strategy and KLE Prep exercises (2h) o Each group will be given a detailed scenario of a situation in a separate country. The group will need to conduct research, prepare which negotiation approach they will be using, identify their BATNA, ZOPA and negotiation style. o In addition one group will be selected and they will conduct a meeting related to their scenario. The instructor will play the individual the group is meeting with.
