13 / INSERTS / INTRODUCTION TO CARBIDE INSERTS INSERT SELECTION METHOD Step1: Answer te ollowing tree questions to elp you Step 2: Coose te correct tool rom tis catalog Example: Steel Question 1: Wat material are you cutting? Answer: CK45 steel Question 2: Wat is te ardness o te material? Answer: 600 N/mm² Question 3: Wat is your operation? Answer: Finising Use te guide to Guide to Workpiece Material cart on page 586 to locate your workpiece material or closest to it. Note te material group (color) and category or your workpiece. Example: CK45 is a steel (blue) in te medium carbon & ig carbon steels category. Turn to te Carbide grade selection/application guide or steel on page 56, (Note: pages are color coded or eac material group). Coose te grade wose mid-point is closest to your operation (eavy rouging, rouging, general purpose or inising). I more tan one grade is applicable, coose te irst grade displayed. Example: Locate te grade you cose in te last step. Find te column or te category o steel being cut. At te intersection were te grade and te category meet, you will ind te recommended cutting speed (Vc) and geometry (cipbreaker). Bold and red lettering indicates irst coice or cipbreaker. Example or ISO: 494 m/min and an F2 geometry. To determine Dept o Cut (DOC), go back to te irst column in te Application guide. A range is given. To select a DOC, start at mid-point or a 12.7 mm I.C. insert (suc as SNMG ). Reduce or smaller inserts (SNMG ) or increase or larger inserts (SNMG ). Example: 0.9 mm Note: DOC sould never exceed ½ o te insert I.C. or cutting edge lengt. To determine te eed rate (millimeter per revolution), go back to te second column. A range is given. In general, ligter eed is used or inising operations and eavier eed rate or rouging or eavy stock removal. Example: 0.1 mm/rev You now ave your starting parameters (Vc, DOC, and Feed) and te recommended grade and geometry. You may increase/decrease cutting conditions to optimize your application depending on many actors including: - Work piece ardness, - Surace inis required, - size, sape and nose radius, - Lead angle, cipbreaker, - Cycle time required, - Desired tool lie, - Desired ailure mode and reason or indexing. See GENERAL INFORMATION on page 342 & 577 to optimize your application. 16 General Catalog

14 / INSERTS / INTRODUCTION TO CARBIDE INSERTS INSERT TEMPLATES Instructions or using insert templates ISO standard part numbers (insert identiication) usually ave 4 letters and 6 digits. Example: CNMG To determine te part number or a given insert Step 1: Determine insert sape (1st letter o part number), size (1st and 2nd digit o part number) and corner radius (5t and 6t digit o part number). Lay te insert lat on te appropriate template sape (square, rombic, trigon, etc.), size and corner radius. Sides (perimeter) o insert sould line up to lines o correct template. Pay special attention to te corner radius area. Wen you ave te correct template, write down te inormation. sape C size Corner radius Step 2: Determine insert relie angle (2nd letter o part number). Stand insert on edge and line up to appropriate template. Add te appropriate letter to te 2nd position o te part number. C N Clearance angle Step 3: Determine insert tickness (3rd and 4t digit o part number). Stand insert on edge and line up to appropriate template. Add te correct number to te second digit o te part number. C N tickness Letters 3 and 4 reer to tolerances and insert caracteristics suc as ole and/or cipbreaker. See ISO codiication page 12 or more details. Customer Service - Tel.: +33 (0) Fax: +33 (0)
