1 -9- SYMBOLISM: The school badge consists of a Scottish thistle surrounded by a laurel wreath with the letters SC on either side of the thistle and below this is the motto of the school Voorwaarts. - Forward The environment and vegetation of Glencoe is very similar to Scotland s Glencoe, therefore the Scottish thistle was chosen. The laurel wreath symbolises the academic values of the school. HISTORY: Sarel Cilliers High School is a relatively young school with a proud history and tradition. Initially there were two schools in Glencoe namely the Willie Maree Technical High School and Glencoe High School. The Department of Education, however, decided that the two schools should amalgamate and thus, in 1974 Sarel Cilliers High School was established. The name is derived from the Voortrekker leader Sarel Cilliers who, on 9 December 1838, took the VOW 17 km outside Glencoe at the present day Wasbank. The first principal of this new school was Mr E.D. Cason, while Mr W Brandt officiated as vice-principal. At present the school principal is Dr M.L. Neethling. He is assisted by four heads of department of which one is responsible for the technical section. Together with academic excellence, which is the highest priority, it is also the school s primary aim to produce educated, well-balanced, God-fearing citizens. ADMISSIONS: Applications for admission must be made on the prescribed forms obtainable from the school. The following documents must accompany the said form on submission; 1. Identity document of both parents/guardians 2. Proof of Residence 3. Pay slip 4. Identity document or birth certificate of the pupil. 5. His/her most recent school report. 6. His/her transfer card (if possible) HOSTELS: On account of the technical subjects which the school provides, the school has two hostels, which provide lodging for learners from far and wide. The two hostels (one boys hostel. and one girls hostel) provide lodging for up to 200 learners. Application for hostel accommodation is made in the same way as the application for school admission except that a letter of motivation must accompany the application. The hostel fees are R per learner per term. Parents should note that when their child is admitted to the school they, as parents will undertake to adhere to the school and hostel rules. MANAGEMENT PLAN: Together with the principal, the two deputy principals and heads of department form the management team which helps in conjunction with the Governing Body to formulate the policy of the school and to bring this policy to fruition.

2 SCHOOL FEES: An annual amount is payable and it is expected of parents to give their co-operation in the collection of these monies. In the future, the availability of education facilities will become the responsibility of the parent community more and more and it is therefore essential that parents take this into consideration when doing their personal financial planning. To be able to provide the necessary requirements for the school this amount will be updated from time to time. Our compulsory school fees for 2012 will be R per learner per year. Fees will be payable as follows: ALL PARENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO PAY AT LEAST THE FIRST (1 ST ) TERM'S SCHOOL FEES WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. 1. Ten monthly payments of R787-00, with the first payment in April 2012 until October Four quarterly payments of R , payable at the beginning of each term; and 3 If school fees are paid in full in the first term 2012, you only pay R for the year. Our aim is to instill in each learner a positive attitude towards himself, his fellow-man and God. COUNCELLING: Learners that experience problems in terms of studies, subject choices and career choices may consult with the councellor. Parents can make appointments with the councellor by contacting the principal. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES SPORT: It is expected of all learners to take part in one summer and one winter sport. If, because of health or any other reason this is not possible, it is expected that a medical certificate be supplied or that parents contact the principal. The following sports are catered for: SUMMER: Tennis, swimming, cricket and athletics WINTER: Rugby, netball, cross-country and hockey SOCIAL SPORT: Chess CULTURAL ACTIVITIES S.C.A. The S.C.A. is an independent Christian society to which any learner of any denomination can belong. SCHOOL NEWSPAPER: Disseltjie is the name of the quarterly school paper in which the term s events are reported.

3 DRAMA: Here the learners are regularly given the chance to demonstrate their acting abilities in the form of one-act plays and talent contests. DEBATING: Learners with debating skills are regularly given the chance to participate in local and zone competitions. CHOIR: The choir is an active section of the cultural activities and regularly takes part in competitions and performances. OTHER ACTIVITIES FIRST AID: A large group of learners are trained in the basic skills of First Aid. MEDIA CENTRE: The school has a fully equipped media centre. The centre has a wide choice of literature for the learners and it is at their disposal daily. An important section of the media centre is that of subject literature where the learners can obtain almost any information concerning their subjects. NB: All extra-curricular activities of the school depend on the participation of all learners even if only as spectators. SCHOOL WEAR: The SUMMER WEAR for boys is; WINTER WEAR (Formal wear); Blue short-sleeved shirt, grey shorts and grey school socks with black laced school shoes. OR Blue short sleeved shirt with school badge. Grey long or short trousers, grey school socks and black laced school shoes. Grey long trousers with blue long-sleeved shirt with school tie, V-necked school jersey and school blazer or just the blazer without the jersey. NB: The school blazer for boys and girls must have the school badge on the pocket. SUMMER WEAR for girls is as follows WINTER WEAR for girls; Grey shirt, short-sleeved blue school shirt with badge on the pocket and white socks with standard black school shoes. (jersey or blazer optional) Grey skirt/long grey pants, long sleeved blue school shirt and tie, stockings ( smoky haze or blackmail ) or grey bobby socks, with blazer. GENERAL INFORMATION HOMEWORK Every class has a homework timetable and a homework notebook. Homework is set regularly in each subject. It is expected of parents and teachers to periodically sign these homework books. Parents are requested to make sure that their children do their homework according to a set programme. TUCK SHOP The tuck shop is situated on the school grounds and supplies learners with an assortment of refreshments.

4 GROUP INSURANCE There is a group insurance scheme available to all learners. Tariffs are available on request at the office. CHURCH There are churches of almost all denominations in Glencoe and Dundee which learners can attend. A very pleasant atmosphere of co-operation exists between the different churches and the school. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The academic achievement of every learner remains the school s highest priority. Where the learner s progress is not satisfactory, contact is made with the parents. However, parents who wish to enquire about the scholastic progress of their child(ren) are most welcome to do so. Such a visit can sometimes be of incomparable value. Please arrange for an appointment if possible. Parent day/evenings are arranged regularly where parents are given the opportunity to personally see or enquire about their children s work. 5 Weekend accounts must be paid promptly on the last day of the month. Learners with outstanding accounts will not be allowed to stay in over weekends until all debts are paid. If you have any queries regarding your hostel account, please contact Mrs van Jaarsveldt. LAUNDRY Only learners who stay in for the weekend will have their laundry done free of charge. Learners who go home for the weekend will be charged R30.00 per week, payable in advance. BREAKAGES Each room contains the following items which are the responsibility of the whole room: a dust bin, a dust pan, bedside table, curtains, beds, mattresses. Should any of these items break or get lost, the learner responsible for the breakage or loss will be charged. If the guilty party is unknown, the costs involved will be shared by all the pupils in the room. Broken windows will be replaced and the learner(s) responsible will be charged. Please encourage your children to respect hostel property, as it is you, the parents, who are paying for the damages. MEDICAL If your child is registered on your medical aid scheme, a copy of both sides of the medical aid membership card is required. No Medical Aid: If your child has no medical aid cover an amount of R must be paid before an appointment for the doctor will be made. Alternatively an amount of R may be paid on arrival at the hostel to cover an emergency visit to the doctor. If not used, it will be credited to your account at the end of each year. Transport: When possible the doctor s vehicle will collect the learners from the hostel. However when a learner is transported by a staff member, the parents will be responsible for the payment of a transport fee, as established by the principal. LINEN Please note that learners must supply their own sheets, duvets, blankets, pillows and towels.
