11 Distance Learning Mode (DLM) Introduction Many Kenyans (and other nationals too) wish to further their academic qualifications, but may not have opportunity to study as regular students because of various reasons. Some have to work to earn a living and therefore cannot find adequate time for school, others find it difficult to sit in class because they feel too old for it, others find it too expensive to register full-time, while other have various other restricting circumstances. The interest and need for attaining higher academic qualifications keeps on growing even though the opportunities appear to be decreasing. With the changing global, economic and technological environment, the demand for new methods of study that are friendly to the working individuals is likely to continue to increase. The KEMU Distance Learning Mode seeks to satisfy this demand. The Mode The Distance Learning Mode of study provides students with opportunity to study at home. The home environment provides a favourable personalised atmosphere for individual study. Using wellprepared instructional materials, assignments, continuous assessments and tutorials, students are guided through various course units to acquire levels of knowledge equivalent to classroom instruction. DLM students take regular University examinations along with other students at the end of the Trimester. The programme is structured to cater for mature candidates who possess post-high school certificates, diplomas or degrees in various fields. It is essentially an upgrade programme. It is not suitable for direct entry by young candidates without previous tertiary level education. These are unlikely to have attained the required experience, discipline and college culture to benefit from private home study. Each candidate is evaluated individually against the degree programme of his/her choice based on his/her transcripts and the academic level of the institution where the candidate graduated from. The University determines the level of entry and the specific course units that can be acceptable as transfer credits. Candidates from more senior institutions thus enter at a higher level. The maximum transferable credit is approximately half of the required credits for graduation. Once the transferable credit is determined, the candidate covers the rest of the course units to complete the degree requirements at his/her own pace.

12 To ensure students get adequate exposure to develop University culture, they are encouraged to maintain as much contact with the University staff and students as possible. They are expected to make use of the library, and are required to make frequent physical, telephone, or written contacts with Departmental staff within the Trimester. Extramural centres are being developed where students can be tutored or regular basis. In addition, they are expected to visit the campus whenever there is a University function. At the end of the Trimester, students get an element of residence when they visit the campus for examinations. They make their own arrangements to be on campus for examinations and other functions. They can rent KEMU facilities depending on the availability during that period. Besides the regular full time/part time mode of study the following programmes are also available by Distant Learning Mode:- i. Bachelor of Business Administration ii. Bachelor of Theology iii. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture iv. Bachelor of Education and Counselling v. Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems vi. Bachelor of Science in Applied Biology. Our academic year begins in August and admissions are done three times a year, at the beginning of each Trimester in September (1 st Trimester), January (2 nd Trimester) and May (3 rd Trimester). 13 LOCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY i. Location and Climate: The Main campus Meru is situated at Kaaga, 5km from the Center of Meru town, approximately 200 km from Nairobi. The University is located on the former Kaaga Rural Training Centre and Methodist Training Institute. Meru has a bimodal climate regime. The main rainy season is in October to December and the second one in March to May. Temperatures can go low but generally around 20 0 c. The coldest months are around June/July and November/December. One may require sweaters and sometimes heavier clothing. Night temperatures are usually moderate. ii. How to get there: a) By private means. (i) From Embu, Drive through Meru town on the main road towards Nanyuki. Turn right at Makutano to the Meru Maua Road. Drive past Meru Teachers College, Meru School and Kaaga Girls High School. KEMU is approximately 3 km from the Makutano junction. (ii) From Nanyuki: Turn left at Makutano to the Meru-Maua Road and drive as described above (i). (iii)from Maua side: You get to KEMU before Makutano and Meru Town. b) By public means i. From Embu; take a matatu from Meru Town Stage (Maua or Ruiri/Maua matatus). Alight at Kenya Methodist University signboard, OR take a small matatu (taxis) behind Standard Bank in Meru town. Alight at Makutano and take another matatu to KEMU (Maua Road) OR ii. If you come in a bus/matatu headed for Maua, then you alight at KEMU i.e. no need to drop in town first. iii. From Nanyuki, alight at Makutano and take a matatu (Kaaga/Ruiri/Maua matatus). iv. From Maua: Take a Meru bound matatu or bus and alight at KEMU before you reach Makutano.

14 Accommodation in KEMU hostels The University offers accommodation on the basis of shared rooms and on first come first served basis. No single rooms are available. You will be provided with a bed, mattress and pillow. You will therefore be required to provide your own beddings and personal effects. You will be expected to live in the hostels for the Trimester you have paid for accommodation. Pleas note that acceptance of hostel accommodation means that you will abide by the regulations governing use of the hostels. These regulations are issued separately during registration. Students who do not wish to be accommodated at the University are advised to indicate so. There are plenty of private accommodation facilities in the University s neighbourhood. Rev.
