9 ADMISSION requirements To obtain your grade 12 certificate, a candidate must have seven (7) subjects in his or her matric year. Four (4) are compulsory subjects: One (1) official language at the level of Home Language and one (1) language as First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and three (3) further choice subjects. The minimum admission requirements for degree study at any university (the old matric exemption, now known as university admission) is a performance level of 4 (50-59%) in at least four (4) subjects from the designated group of subjects (see list below). Designated subject list for University admission Business Studies Dramatic Art Economy Physical Sciences (Natural Sciences) Geography History Religious Studies Engineering Graphics and Design Information Technology Agricultural Science Life Sciences Music Accounting Languages (One (1) language of learning and teaching as used at higher education) Consumer Studies Visual Art Mathematics Mathematical Literacy 9

10 You need at least four (4) subjects from the list above at level 4 (50-59%). Secondly, you must comply with the APS score and admission requirements for the study course involved. Determining the APS score The performance in six (6) subjects is used to calculate the APS score. Four (4) of the subjects are from the designated list (as needed for university admission). If the two (2) other subjects are not from the list (thus from the ordinary NSC subject list) it is taken into account. The APS mark obtained in Life Orientation is not taken into account when calculating the APS score, but to attain a National Senior Certificate (NSC), a learner must acquire a scale mark of three (3) in Life Orientation. For the Potchefstroom Campus of the NWU, the following Language requirements have been set: A pass mark of level 4 (50-59%) in the language of learning and teaching at Home Language or First Additional Language level. Therefore if Afrikaans is your home language level language and English your first additional language, you must attain this performance in at least one (1) of the two (2). For more information on provisional university admission, contact or visit The following selection table is used for determining the APS score: (Conversion of symbols of school subjects) NSC-level 7 (80-100%) 7 6 (70-79%) 6 5 (60-69%) 5 4 (50-59%) 4 3 (40-49%) 3 2 (30-39%) 2 1 (0-29%) 1 APS score An example of how to determine the APS score. (This is only an example. Apply your own subjects and marks to the example.) Setswana Home Language (from designated list) 4 English First Additional Language (from designated list) 4 Mathematical Literacy (from designated list) 6 Consumer Studies (from designated list) 6 Design (NSC subject) 6 Computer Application Technology (NSC subject 5 APS score 31 Now compare it with the requirements in this study information guide to determine whether you qualify for admission. 10
