1 JOINT SEMINAR RELIGIOUS AND ETHNIC MINORITY YOUTH: SOCIETAL AND MEDIA DYNAMICS Centre d études ethniques des universités montréalaises (CEETUM) and KU LEUVEN Institute for Media Studies (IMS) Interculturalism, Migration and Minorities Research Centre (IMMRC) Aims March 4-7, 2014 This event will bring together professors and graduate students from the Centre d études ethniques des universités montréalaises (CEETUM) and from mainly two different research centres at the KU Leuven. It is the first official collaboration since an agreement was signed between the CEETUM and KU Leuven in October Researchers will present their work on social and media issues as regards youth of ethnic and religious minorities. The seminar will provide a unique educational experience for students in the humanities and social sciences from Montreal and from KU Leuven by allowing them to discover the work of researchers from various disciplines (sociology, anthropology, education, media studies). Students from Montreal will further benefit from extracurricular activities, such as a visit to a centre for integrating new migrants, that will allow them to observe ethnic and religious pluralism in a different national context. Student participants selected by the CEETUM will receive three credits (Travail pratique) for their participation. They will be given preparatory readings before the seminar selected by the professors and researchers who will be presenting their work in the seminar. After returning from Belgium they will write a term paper on a theme relevant to the seminar that will be evaluated by a professor member of the CEETUM and commented on by one of the seminar participants from KU Leuven. 1
2 The seminar will permit the researchers from the CEETUM and KU Leuven to become acquainted with each other s work and to define themes for future collaborations in the form of joint research and co-publications. A special issue of the journal Diversité Urbaine (GRDU/CEETUM) is planned. Finally, the graduate students and professors visiting from Montreal will have an opportunity to make contacts in view of future visits at KU Leuven. The Montreal group includes three professors who are particularly interested in such possibilities. Graduate students will have an opportunity to see what KU Leuven has to offer regarding a visit as an exchange student or for a post-doctorate in the future. A future visit to the CEETUM by KU Leuven researchers will also be discussed. 2
