3 CENTRE FOR BIOMEDICAL ETHICS AND LAW The Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law consists of a number of experts in medical ethics and medical law. The Centre aspires to provide education, research and scientific and societal service in medical ethics and law. The Centre was created in 1986 and will celebrate its 30 th anniversary in BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Contemporary health care systems face many challenges, which essentially boil down to the following question: How can we reconcile (1) the principle of justice and equity for all, with (2) the assignment of providing good quality care, and (3) the principle of economic sustainability? The objective of this intensive course is to analyse the key issues at stake, both from a fundamental perspective, and from the perspective of applied ethical questions. FORMAT This course works from an interdisciplinary perspective. During the course, an international group of philosophers, economists, theologians, physicians, pharmacologists, psychologists, lawyers, policy makers and health care managers, will focus on the issue of justice and priority setting in health care. There will be time for intensive discussions. The language of instruction will be English. PARTICIPANTS The course is of interest to participants from diverse professional backgrounds, such as medicine, philosophy, economy, sociology and theology and is open to health care workers, people from the healthcare administration, health care managers, boardmembers, policy makers, as well as to PhD students undertaking courses of study in these areas. The reading materials will be distributed on the first day of the intensive course.

8 ERASMUS MUNDUS MASTER OF BIOETHICS The intensive course is part of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics programme organised by a consortium of three European universities, namely the KU Leuven (Belgium), Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (The Netherlands) and the Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy). Because of this combination, participants of the intensive course Choices in Health Care, will join Master students from all over the world.
