Le Centre Universitaire Saint-Ignace d Anvers (ucsia) a l honneur de vous inviter à un séminaire doctoral avec dr. Donal Dorr. Coming Down to Earth: The Option for the Poor. The experience of coming down to earth can be a valuable and exciting challenge. The first step is experiential coming to a sense of solidarity with those who are poor, disadvantaged, or marginalized. This requires some degree of immersion in their world, towards a first hand experience of their lives, concerns, interests, and values: gaudium et spes, luctus et dolor (Gaudium et Spes, 1). This may lead on to an option for the poor, which has the character of a conversion. Such conversion calls for the development of new skills, particularly listening skills and the discernment of what Paulo Freire calls generative issues. Coming down to earth also involves a deeper awareness of the ways in which the earth sustains and nourishes us physically, psychologically, and spiritually and a concomitant sharpening of the commitment to care for the earth when considering social intervention for migrant persons and groups (which must include their reception, recognition, redistribution and representation), as well as how this affects our very notion of integration. in samenwerking met en collaboration avec Faculteit Theologie en Religiewetenschappen ku Leuven Faculté de Théologie Université catholique de Louvain Faculteit voor Protestantse Godgeleerdheid te Brussel

3 DOCTORAL SEMINAR MONDAY 25 MARCH 2013 The doctoral seminar is open to post-doctoral and doctoral researchers and invited master students of theology and other relevant disciplines such as sociology, political science and law. Prof. dr. Johan Verstraeten (ku Leuven) will critically reflect on Dr. Dorr s contribution, followed by an exchange of thoughts and a discussion with the participating scholars. 15:00 Introduction Prof. Dr. Jacques Haers, ucsia 15:05 Address Dr. Donal Dorr 15:30 Response Prof. Dr. Johan Verstraeten, ku Leuven 15:45 Debate with participants 17:00 End Rev Dr. Donal Dorr sps is an Irish missionary priest, theologian, and social activist. Ordained in 1961, he obtained his doctorate in theology at Maynooth University, Ireland, in He engaged in intensive training in group work and more recently also as a therapist. After three years of lecturing in philosophy at Cork University, he went on to teach theology at various colleges in Ireland and at the National Institute for Moral and Religious Education, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. In the early 1980s he was the holder of the Cardinal Conway Research Fellowship in Theology of Development, Maynooth University. The main focus of his work and research has been on empowering grassroots activists in Africa and Ireland in working for justice and the care for the environment, in training religious leaders and activists in leadership skills, and in running spirituality workshops for people who are searching for meaning and purpose in their lives. Donal Dorr is the author of the following books: Catholic Social Teaching: Option for the Poor and for the Earth (Orbis Books, 2012) Conversion and Holiness: The Teaching of John Wesley (CreateSpace, 2012) Spirituality: Our Deepest Heart s Desire (Columba Press, 2009) Faith at Work. A Spirituality of Leadership (Liturgical Press, 2007) Integral Spirituality, Mission in Today s World (2000) Spirituality and Justice (1986) The Social Justice Agenda (1992) Divine Energy (1996) Johan Verstraeten is professor at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies and research coordinator for theological ethics. He shares Donal Dorr s special interest in Catholic Social Thought (cst) and the relationship between spirituality and leadership. He recently published articles on cst in Concilium, International Journal of Public Theology and he edited a special issue of The Journal for Catholic Social Thought on cst and the Movements (forthcoming). His book (in Dutch) on leadership and spirituality was reprinted several times.
