1 NOTA To Prospective students Date From International office campus Sint-Lukas Onze referentie N-WA/INT/MAapplicBrussel15-16 Subject Master degree applications Introduction: international students We distinguish the following categories of International students: International students who have studied in Flanders, Belgian or international students who have studied in Wallonia, Belgian or international student who have studied outside Belgium, International or Belgian students obtaining an International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate. 2 Access to postgraduate (2 nd cycle) programmes in the Flanders region of Belgium By Initial master's programmes will require a previous Bachelor's degree in the same field of study or, where indicated by the specific programme, in a related field of study. Candidates applying for admission should also consult the academic and portfolio prerequisites per programme for details. 3 Application requirements In order to be entitled for enrolment in a master s degree programme prospective students will have to meet the following criteria: Diploma: the presented bachelor diploma or equivalent diploma grants you access to a master degree of visual or audio-visual arts Language: the prospective students meet the language requirements Portfolio: the prospective student has a relevant and convincing body of artistic works. 2 2 van 7 4 Application deadlines MA degrees of visual arts and audio-visual arts call n 1: Sunday May 31st 2015 (for applicants from outside the European Economic Area who have no residence in Belgium prior to the application); call n 2: Saturday August 1 st (for applicants from within the European Economic Area! Applications from prospective students from outside Europe can only apply if they have a fix residence address in Belgium or Europe prior to the moment of application) 5 Application procedure All applicants submit a digital application through the online application form ( ) where you can upload your attachments. Receiving a hard copy of your application is requested as well, certainly we prefer to receive the certified copies of your bachelor s diploma and relevant transcripts of records! The following documents are mandatory to be submitted: master s application E-form ( ) CV; letter of motivation; master's project proposal: enclose an idea of what type of project (+ theme) you would like to work at during your master. Use the attached master project proposal form. Portfolio: please take into account the attached portfolio requirements per master discipline. Certified bachelor or equivalent diploma / degree certificates and translation of the diploma in case the diploma is not yet translated into English, French, German or Dutch (more information is to be find under the chapter 'Diploma requirements' below) Certified transcript of records / diploma supplement and translation in case the transcripts is not yet translated into English, French, German or Dutch (more information is to be find under the chapter 'Diploma requirements' below) proof of English or Dutch language proficiency (level requirements and recognized certificates under the chapter 'Language requirements') - candidates who cannot

3 3 van 7 immediately sit a language exam like TOEFL, IELTS due to waiting lists are allowed to present beyond the application deadline); copy of your ID or passport Supplementary documents: an example of a dissertation: if you made a graduate dissertation already in a previous (bachelor or master) study please submit a copy; APS certificate (only for Chinese students) Where to lodge your application to? Although proficiency in Dutch is being recommended most master specializations offer lectures, seminars and practice sessions bilingually using both Dutch and English. In some majors like Fine art, Information design, Photography and Animation film English is used foremost. The majors in Film and Graphic Storytelling (Comics) where (visual) language and storytelling is important we are using both languages. In those programmes part of the studio practices are still taught in Dutch, but group sessions are bilingual and many professors are willing to give an additional summary in English. The cross-over seminar is taught in English, the two critical practices per major are mostly offered in English / bilingual as well, and the master s degree project (including dissertation and final artistic project) can be tutored and presented in English or using a forum language..

4 4 van 7 Language requirements Only students with a good command of English, both spoken and written, will have any chance of successfully completing the Master s programme. Applicants are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English, either by proving that some of their previous studies in higher education were successfully completed in English (only English programs obtained in countries of the Inner Circle are being accepted), or by submitting the results of a recognized language proficiency test or another equivalent English test. LUCA School of arts accepts the following certificates or proof of English language proficiency: The applicant can present a bachelor's degree (=university education) including statement that the BA study of at least 180 ECTS was conducted in English TOEFL paper test: 550. TOEFL computer test 213 TOEFL internet test 79. IELTS 6.0 Cambridge language test. LUCA School of arts accepts the following certificates or proof of Dutch language proficiency: A proof that the applicant has successfully followed a Dutch-language study programme of at least one year, either at an institute of Higher Education or a Secondary School, or successfully completed at least 54 ECTS credits in a Dutch taught higher education degree programme. a Dutch language certificate that is recognized by the Dutch language (Nederlandse Taalunie) and that grants access to higher education. language certificate Level 5 of the ILT- Catholic University of Leuven language certificate Level 5 van KUB/HUB language certificate Level 4 of the University Antwerp language certificate Level 3 of Ghent University A certificate PTHO (Profiel Taalvaardigheid Hoger Onderwijs) awarded by Nederlandse Taalunie, Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal (CnaVT); A certificate PAT (Profiel Academische Taalvaardigheid) awarded by Nederlandse Taalunie, Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal (CnaVT). A certificate issued by an Adult Learning Centre (in Dutch: CVO or Centrum voor Volwassenenonderwijs ), minimum level 3

5 5 van 7 Diploma requirements: what to submit? The (photo)copies of diplomas and transcripts should be certified as true and authentic copies of the originals by the educational institution that issued them. If you are still preparing for an examination at the time of application, you are requested to send as soon as the results are available a certificate attesting to the results. Certified copies are copies of original documents that are certified with a stamp and signature to confirm that the copies are true to the originals. You can have documents certified by the educational institution that issued the original documents. Documents that are certified by notaries are not always accepted, so don t rely on it. If the country where the diploma was issued has signed "The Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents" (1961, in that case the copy of your diploma or transcripts has to bear the "Apostille". For more information on this convention, to see whether the country where your diploma was issued has signed the convention and to find out who can put an apostille on the copy of your diploma, go to the official website. 7 Practical information Enrolment fees The enrolment fees are published on the Dutch language website here: and here on the English language website: Other types of study agreements besides the standard trajectory 1. Diploma versus credit agreement versus exam agreement When you enrol, you may choose between two contract: a) a diploma contract with a view to obtaining the diploma of the MA program of your choice or ; b) a credit contract with a view to obtaining a proof of credit for one or more course components of the course s programme is no longer possible because of the specific course organization and sequence of the MA degrees. 2. Under the diploma contract, you can enrol as a full-time or as a part-time student. If you choose part-time, you enrol for 30 ECTS and you program will consist of Critical Studies (which are 2 critical practices and 1 cross-over seminar) and the master studio/ atelier before you can enrol for the Master s Project.

6 6 van 7 Scholarships LUCA School of Arts LUCA School of Arts doesn t manage a scholarship program for international students. Flemish government The International Relations Office of the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training offers - within the framework of the Bilateral Cultural Agreements with several European and non-european countries - a limited number of postgraduate- and post-university scholarships to foreign students. In some cases, if the applicant has already a master's degree title, he might apply also for graduate programmes at master level. To be eligible for a scholarship the candidate has to be selected by the responsible home authority. Afterwards this authority has to propose the applications by diplomatic procedure to the Flemish Community. More information: Assessment of procedure of your application Procedure of assessment International students can only register for a specific programme after formal approval following an assessment of suitability and capability to join the programme. An assessment will be conducted by an academic committee of the master discipline concerned, taking into on a credential and academic check of the application (step 1) and an intake interview (step 2). Applicants who pass the credential and academic check (step 1) are then invited for the interviews of call 1 (last week of June or first week of July )or those of call 2 (the 1 st or 2 nd week of September). Not each applicant will be invited for the interviews. The assessment will determine whether you possess the required basic competencies for the master s course. There is no direct admission to our master's degree programmes. Depending on the results of this assessment, the academic committee may oblige one to complete a preparatory programme first, the content and size of which are dependent on the degree of affinity concerning content between the characteristics of the course of the attained bachelor course and the academic bachelor course in audio-visual or visual arts.

7 7 van 7 If the commission re-orientates you to the bachelor s programme or preparatory programme after step 1 (check) or step 2 (interview) the Flemish Decree on higher education stipulates that every applicant has to sit and pass the artistic aptitude test which is the formal entry requirement for the bachelor programmes.
