2 Welcome to the Learning Department Working with young people, from Year 7 to Higher Education, is where we can truly work closely with you to design and deliver a tailored programme to meet your needs. The following pages highlight some of the ways in which we have worked with local schools, colleges and universities. 3 Belton s Forgotten Gunners (our FWW heritage) Suitable for Key Stage 3 Session times: Maximum 4 classes per day (in 8 groups with a minimum of 2 adults per group) Location: This workshop takes place in the Discovery Centre and in our parkland, at the site of the Machine Gun Corp Training Camp. Cost: 2 per student or a minimum payment of In 1914, Lord Adelbert Wellington Brownlow Cust, the 3 rd Earl Brownlow, being too old to fight offered the use of Belton Parkland to the War Office. From then on, soldiers could be found training in our parkland. Major changes were made in October 1915 when the Machine Gun Corp was formed. This was the equivalent of another Grantham town springing up overnight, right next door to this town. During this workshop we will focus on the stories of the machine gunners and their camp. Your day will be split into two sessions: Session A (Training Camp site) During this session we aim to explore the landscape as it is today using contemporary 1915 maps to locate key areas of the camp from the military hospital, to the YMCA huts and, what we believe to be, the officer s camp. We will also use the poetry written by one of the gunners while at Belton House to try and capture an essence of that past. We will also start to create a literacy work invoked by the gunner s words and the parkland. Session B (Discovery Centre) This session uses contemporary First World War resources, including photographs and letters, and reproductions to explore a number of characters and situations from the camp. We will also replicate some team training exercises, such as semaphore signalling. A case study pack will also be provided for you to support your classroom work.

Talks can be scheduled at any point during your visit. Location: This workshop includes a tour of the Mansion and a tailored talk in the Discovery Centre. 5 Examples of other projects recently undertaken: Inspired by Belton Working with Fashion Design students from the University of Lincoln, students took inspiration from our collections to design and create a range of knitwear dresses. These were then displayed through the summer holidays for all our visitors to see. Students also kindly provided 2 days of hands-on activities for our visitors, which showcased their work. Modern Foreign Language and Media project A local school spent the day at Belton House in July Students combined their studies by creating scripts and filming news reports in a foreign language, using Belton House as a back drop. River Studies Another local school spent time with us, developing a River Studies programme. After discussing how the National Trust conserves our parkland and the different agencies that we work with to manage the river, students were able to use field techniques to sample 3 locations along the River Wytham in our parkland. We can provide a case study and guidance for you to lead a session in our parkland.

6 Resources for hire Resources are provided for a class of 30 students. Where there are multiple classes you will be able to arrange your own timetable of use as the resources are available for the whole of your visit. Artist s Kits: Everything you need for art activities in the gardens. Each bag includes clipboards, paper, drawing pencils, coloured pencils, crayons, pastels and guidance on areas for focus.
