2 2 Planning Your Visit About us Come and explore the story of the Welsh woollen industry at the National Wool Museum, Dre-fach Felindre. The Museum is housed in the historic former Cambrian Mills, once at the heart of this thriving industry. The story of the industry is brought to life through engaging demonstrations, working machinery, archive material and exciting hands-on displays as well as an inspiring textile gallery. Even our smallest visitors can safely experience a real factory environment in the working mill. All our programmes have cross-curricular appeal and have been created with the Cwricwlwm Cymreig and the National Curriculum in mind. Our sessions focus on history, geography, science, art, design and technology and the development of pupils key skills. Whether you are studying the woollen industry, the Industrial Revolution, clothes, materials and their properties, people and work in the past or the local area, the National Wool Museum has something for you. You will also find inspiration from our textiles for your own weaving or colours and patterns project. Entry and all activities are FREE thanks to the support of the Welsh Government

4 4 Foundation Phase and KS2 Foundation Phase and KS2 From Fleece to Fabric Follow the traditional process of creating textiles from the fleece to the finished cloth. Discover the skills involved in the large scale manufacture compared to the hand processes. Experience demonstrations of working machinery and a range of hands-on activities with your very own craftsperson. Wonderful Wool Explore the properties and products of wool in a facilitated session in the Museum s Textile Gallery. Discuss why wool is the right material for the job as you dress up, examine patterns and handle collections, from traditional Welsh costume and carthenni to current fashion trends. The Woollen Industry and the Victorian Era The Industrial Revolution dramatically altered the face and pace of woollen production in Wales. Explore the factors behind the rise of the woollen industry in Dre-fach Felindre. The session includes a slide show of images, group discussion and curriculum-based activities. 60s Fashion and the Woollen Industry Despite the decline of the woollen industry after the Second World War, there was a short revival during the 1960s, due to demand from the fashion industry and the influence of Mary Quant. Come and see our collection of 60s clothes designed in Wales and watch a film of them paraded in a fashion show. Discover the designs, styles and influences of Mary Quant and compare today s fashion with the fashion of the 60s. Explore 60s patterns by looking at geometric and symmetric patterns and design your own pattern or garment. Craft Workshops We can also provide a variety of craft workshops, including weaving and felt making. Your pupils can get creative and discover for themselves the fascinating world of textile production and design. The sessions above last one hour and are led by Museum staff. Max. 25 pupils. Please contact us for available dates.

6 6 For all Key Stages Sessions available for Primary and Secondary Facilitated sessions These sessions provide a real experience of the woollen industry in the heart of where it happened. They are also designed to complement and provide background to the curriculum-focused sessions on the previous page. The Museum Trail A tour of the Museum will enhance pupils learning as they see the development from the domestic to the industrial, through the machinery and stories of the people who lived and worked in the local community. The Village Trail The Village Trail brings the effect of the Industrial Revolution to life as you discover the sites of old factories, compare the houses of the Mill owners to those of the workers, and see the growth of the village, through its churches, chapels, shops and community hall. Welsh Baccaulaureate The Museum has a wealth of opportunities to support the Welsh Baccalaureate. Please phone the Learning Manager on (029) to plan your visit and discuss resources. Teacher-led opportunities for all ages Textile Trail This trail is designed to engage pupils with professional works of art created by Julia Griffiths Jones, which offer a contemporary and personal response to the Museum s collections.
