17 WELCOME The tool-making industry is constantly subject to change. As with the automation of single piece production, the industrialization of this traditional trade is just as much a topic today as it was many years ago. While the rapid developments of existing and the rise of new production technologies increase manufacturing complexity, this is also a time of many new opportunities. At the colloquia in the past, representatives from industry and research have always presented new approaches approaches with which companies are able to meet these challenges. Businesses have been very successful in their use of eicient technological and organizational processes as well as in the consistent standardization and modularization of tools right the way to value stream oriented takt time manufacturing. Increasingly complex tools and ever shorter development times also require consistent digital processes and a systematic means of archiving, updating and accessing the available knowledge particularly from the view point of inter-company cooperation and networks. We call it Industry 4.0: new opportunities for tool and die making suppliers, customers and businesses. The companies that master these challenges are the companies that will form the future. We would like the lectures at this year s colloquium to once again provide fresh impetus for lively debate within the industry. We look forward to meeting you! Prof. Dr.-Ing. Fritz Klocke Head of Fraunhofer IPT and WZL director Prof. Dr.-Ing. Günther Schuh WZL and Fraunhofer IPT director 3
18 THE EXCELLENCE IN PRODUCTION COMPETITION The Excellence in Production competition gives a face to the tool and die making industry. For the past eleven years, we, the WZL at the RWTH Aachen and the Fraunhofer IPT, have been presenting you the best tool and die making companies. All companies nominated for the inale have proved themselves in a highly competitive run-up, for which they can be very proud. A place in the inale is not something to be taken for granted! A thorough questionnaire and a scientiically based performance indicator system give us an impression of the performance of the participating companies and enable us to compare them with each other. A team of scientists visits the best companies, has a close look at the tool-making processes and reviews the results of the performance comparison. An independent jury then nominates the best entrants for the inale and names the overall winner. The secret will be disclosed on the evening of the award ceremony: who is the Tool-Maker of the Year 2014? Comparability In order to give all participants a fair chance, the prizes are awarded into four categories plus the overall winner: External tool-maker with less than 50 employees External tool-maker with more than 50 employees Internal tool-maker with less than 50 employees Internal tool-maker with more than 50 employees Overall winner The competition is supported by our partners from the media VDI nachrichten and the specialist journal werkzeug&formenbau. Our other sponsors are Siemens, HASCO Hasenclever GmbH + Co. KG and DEMAT GmbH, organizer of the EuroMold trade fair.. Competition and Colloquium Partners 4
