4 2016 Clark County Fair Honor Roll Allan Hess Allan s involvement in the fair began in the Short Circuits 4-H club where he served as the treasurer and reporter. The fair was the highlight of the summer as it was close to his birthday. He attended 4-H camp two years. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in His career started at Kings Island where he served as the director of merchandise and games operations in 1971 after returning from serving in the Army. Serving as operations manager at several theme parks he joined a consulting firm and worked on theme park projects in Korea and Singapore. When he saw the advertisement for the Executive Director s position at his home fair he was excited about the opportunity. The board voted to offer him a contract and starting January 1, 1995, he jumped into the fire planning for the upcoming fair and trying to learn the ins and outs of our great fair. It was both exciting and chaotic. The years brought some much needed changes to the fairgrounds. The projects funded by the County Commissioners included upgrading the water lines in the whole fairgrounds and switching to City water supply, new roofs on the exhibit buildings, and repaving a major portion of the asphalt roadways. The board of directors approved a future search to determine the community s expectations for the fairgrounds in Over 100 community leaders met for three consecutive days and came up with a list of wants for the fairgrounds. A 25 year master plan was developed and parts of that plan including the Champions Center have been accomplished. Over the past 21 years Allan has overseen such projects as the building of new maintenance and storage buildings, new restrooms on the Youth Building, front gate redesign, major electric upgrades, and several campsite upgrades. He purchased the gravel pit for the board from the City of Springfield. Being involved with the Ohio Fair Managers Association, Allan has been a presenter of numerous seminars at the annual convention. He was active in the International Association of Fairs and Expositions attending Zone Three meetings annually. In 2012 the Zone Three meeting was hosted by our fair board and we had over 100 participants from throughout the zone. The three day event was organized by Allan and included trips to Young s and the Greene County fairgrounds. The fairgrounds generate over 65 percent of the overnight stays in hotels due to the events that are hosted on the grounds. The fairgrounds being the major contributor to the tourist industry, he was asked to serve on the board of directors of the Convention and Visitors Bureau and has served for 19 years. He has served as the chairman of the agricultural committee of the Kiwanis Club of Springfield. Allan has always understood that the role of the Agricultural Society was to support the youth in 4-H and FFA. He was honored to have received the Friend of 4-H Award at the banquet in H played a special role in his life and he has been thankful to have had the opportunity to help make the birthplace of 4-H continue strong in the tradition of 4-H. 4

14 Clark County Agricultural Society Board of Directors Senior Fair - Junior Fair Clark County Fair Theme - Sew It, Grow It, Show It The theme this year says it all for the 4-Hers and FFA students. They work hard on their projects and the fair is the place where they get to Show It off for their friends and family to see the results of their hard work. The comradery with their fellow club members and students help make the effort worthwhile. Make sure that you visit the Youth Building and the livestock barns to see all the projects on display. The midway has new and exciting things going on this year including Mr. Abraham Lincoln strolling around, the High Flying Pages aerial show, Wombolt s Circus with elephants and tigers, the chain saw artist is returning, and a strolling banjo player. The Big Tent starts Saturday with a return engagement of Mr. Speed, The KISS tribute band, Sunday has Wyatt McCubbin and Wednesday, we are proud to present country star Phil Vassar performing his hits. Motorsports will include truck tugs and pulls, tractor pull, demolition derby and new this year, ATV drag racing. So come, bring the family, and enjoy the 2016 Clark County Fair.
