4 OTOLOGY JUBILEE: 150 Years of the Archiv für Ohrenheilkunde Past-Present-Future in Otology & Neurotology Welcome address One hundred fifty years ago, Hermann Schwartze in Halle, Adam Politzer in Vienna, and Anton von Tröltsch in Würzburg jointly founded the Archiv für Ohrenheilkunde ( Archive of Otology ), as the world s first journal solely devoted to otology. Today, the journal is published as the European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. The conference celebrates this jubilee of our specialty with a program consisting of oral and poster contributions on the history, the state of the art and the future directions of otology and neurotology, under the motto: Where do we come from? Where are we? - Where are we going? It is the aim of the conference to look back and acknowledge the endeavors and successes of our academic predecessors but also to point out meanders in basic and clinical science, diagnostics and therapy. We want to proudly emphasize the amazing developments in understanding the physiology and pathophysiology of the intact and the diseased organ, in diagnostic technology and surgical techniques including passive and active implants for restoring hearing, which all have completely changed our field in the last 150 years. We want to discuss which otological and neurootological questions and problems have been solved during the last 150 years and which are still unsolved issues in different parts of the world. Finally, we want to increase interest in the fascinating history of otology and neurotology and catch a glimpse of what we may expect in the future of our specialty. On behalf of all organizers I welcome you in Halle Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it G. Santayana, The life of Reason, 1905 Stefan K. Plontke Stefan K. Plontke Conference Chairman Volume 1 of the «Archiv» 4
