Architect Kent Kovacs Owner s Project Manager Joel Seeley Symmes, Maini & McKee
What is the NEED for the Project?
The Need Provide a long term solution to resolve existing deteriorating schools Avoid the loss of high school accreditation Provide educational spaces that meet MSBA state standards Update the schools to meet the Visioning session goals Provide 21st Century Educational spaces Provide schools that are safe, code compliant, and places that Holbrook can be proud of
Do the Existing Schools meet MSBA Educational Standards? The Existing Elementary Schools are 31% below MSBA standards The Existing Jr/Sr High School is 21% below MSBA standards The New PK-12 will increase educational space by 44,000 SF
Why PreK -12? Single Building Regionalization Ready Most Economical
Advantages of PK-12 Consolidates resources in order to provide additional services and space Provides services to all students, i.e., music, art, theatre arts, computers, psychological assistance Provides flexible spaces for differentiated instruction, team concept, and group work Provides new electives that would include internships for high school students in the preschool and mentoring/big brother-big sister programs Avoids transition issues that disrupt learning Facilitates vertical alignment of curriculum, particularly the problem area of mathematics from grade 6 to grade 7 Co-curricular activities can include younger students
Advantages of PK-12 (cont.) Older students can provide tutoring for younger students. NEASC recommendations for consistency of curriculum, community service learning programs for students, use of common rubrics, and inadequate staffing could be addressed. Better opportunities for Special Education inclusion. More therapeutic time for students with elimination of therapists travel. More collaborative time for specialists with elimination of travel time. Eliminates three schools in very poor condition. State-of-the-art security for all students safety. Retain great teachers.
Accreditation The Value of an Accredited High School Assures parents, students and community members that their Town provides a quality educational program Assures Colleges that graduates of the high school were provided with an educational program that maximizes student learning Affects the reputation of a community since the retention or loss of accreditation has a demonstrable effect on local property values
Accreditation - Holbrook has been on probation since 2005 The physical plant of Holbrook Junior-Senior High School does not support the effective implementation of the curriculum. The school is at maximum capacity and the 50-year old design is not conducive to instructional strategies that are consistent with current research and best practices. the school s outdated power supply cannot effectively support necessary technology such as a full complement of computers in the library media center if such a thing were provided. Although most staff members actively promote student well-being, the reported and observed facility safety issues such as damaged ceiling tiles, water damage, and poor air quality in locations of the building compromise student well-being. This not only negatively impacts the students sense of well-being, but it also negatively influences their learning. Despite the difficult economic realities Holbrook faces, formal plans to address deficiencies in the facility, programs, and staffing are long overdue and must be given high priority and energetic attention by all stakeholders. - NEASC Report of the Visiting Team 2005
