Internet of things Perspectives on the Internet of things IoT for a green planet conference, Tokyo, 2010 Nov. 30 Niko Hossain Fraunhofer IML, Dortmund

Agenda Perspectives on the Internet of Things Sociological perspective Technological perspective Economic perspective Internet of things use cases Internet of things at the Fraunhofer IML Visions Folie 1

Management Abstract: Internet of things applications The Internet of Things is a metaphor, how can we understand? Always and everywhere connected objects in different applications from parcels, over buildings to health care applications e.g. Completely different object-based technologies specifically in terms of physical interfaces The Internet as a backbone to offer a regional and global communication standard, with the possibility to mount services on top The following perspectives can help to sharpen the meaning of the metaphor: Sociological perspective Technological perspective Economic perspective Folie 2

IoT? Why is that? Social circumstances Paris-Brussels 1 hour by train People are moving faster and faster Who knows his neighbors life in urban areas divides humans socialy Humans wants to communicate and share information, we are a herd animal: Kant's unsocial sociability "drives Facebook and the Internet of Things... unlimited data space generates an intrinsic sense of deficit In the constant search for something new! People looking for a replacement for the long-lost social Habitat! Ungesellige Geselligkeit, Immanuel Kant: Kritik der reinen Vernunft Folie 3 Zitate Dubravka Ugresic, Neue Züricher Zeitung

From social trends to global impacts Folie 4

Internet usage increases exponentially In the past 24 hours, Chinese people have first gone online. Today more people use mobile internet connections than regular computer connections. Bild: Folie 5

Trend development: growth, knowledge and information From 2000 to 2002, more data is available than in the years before. Currently, doubled the amount of data every 1-2 years. The acceleration of this development continues increasingly. Folie 6 Quelle: UC Berkeley Fraunhofer IML (Brodie, Verizon) Fraunhofer IML 2010

Trends through social networks Facebook has more members than most nations of the world population Facebook would be as a nation (500 million members) the third largest nation in the world Only the states of India and China have a higher population Folie 7 Quelle: T-online.de, Fraunhofer IML Fraunhofer IML 2010

Media data volume increasing strongly Hollywood dream factory can not keep up with the production rate of the YouTube users The community publishes every week video material in length of 176,000 movies. Folie 8 Quelle: T-online.de, Fraunhofer IML Fraunhofer IML 2010

Empirical technology laws for the Internet of things Moore's Law 1965: number of IC components has doubled each year Computing power doubles every 18 months Bell's Law Every 10 years is a new generation of computers Metcalfe s Law Value of a network increases exponentially with the increase of network participants Gilder s Law Network bandwidth doubles every 12 months Bilderquelle: GettyImages; Deutsche Telekom aus IKT2020 Folie 12

internet of things internet of things backbone internet: routing, computation, services computation / costs / size / power/ bw. GSM/LTE WSN AutoID rich connection up to 4G low power connection induced passive interrogator self powered receiver / device access point (BTS) master / device / computer internet Gateway - static IP Sensors FhG IML 2010, Niko Hossain physical attached / embedded things virtual / digital world interaction non moveable objects moveable objects environment (places, buildings, etc.) real world interaction actuators applications use cases (human centric / business centric) energy virtual alter ego Folie 13

Axioms of IoT (Draft phase) Strong axioms 1. Objects have to be addressable (unique numbering) 2. Data communication will take place via Internet (no new internet for IoT) 3. IoT have to be power autarky: No batteries or huge power demand Weak axioms 1. Low latency: Objects have to be addressable in real-time 2. No human interaction for data acquisition 3. IoT centric applications has to addressable without path through 4. IoT have to be mobile mostly Folie 14

Governmental view of IoT value generation The RFID sales will increase at annual growth rates of 25 percent by the year 2016 about 16 billion euros Investment in the "Internet of things", especially with its innovative services, eg Cloud computing will make in 2012, ten percent of global IT spending The Internet of Things "will make 2010, approximately eight percent of Germany's value in industry, trade, transport and private and public service Quelle: BMWI Folie 17 German Ministry of economics and technology 2009

e.g. smart cities Cities on the green path The majority of people live in cities, which cause 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. To direct the rapid urbanization in green cars, the cities are increasingly turning to energy-efficient technologies and new concepts. Folie 23 Die Zeitschrift für Forschung und Innovation, Frühjahr 2010, Siemens

e.g. smart grids and resource strategies Billion spam messages are sent daily. Because each needs power for distribution on PC and server computer, it consumes energy. Taken together, this energy could be enough for a million metropolitan city for each day. Folie 24 Die Zeitschrift für Forschung und Innovation, Frühjahr 2010, Siemens
