FIA 2011 Linked Data Session Linked Data for Telecom Networks Ivan BEDINI, Bell Labs Research Budapest May 18, 2011
AGENDA 1. Telecom Network Trends 2. cell Testbed Network Experiments 3. Linking Network Nodes and Applications Using LD 4. Other Telcos Use Cases 5. Semantic Challenges for Networked Environments 2
Network Virtualization and Operating Systems Trends Many service providers are beginning to consolidate their networks on a common infrastructure Many legacy telecom network elements will be consolidated on an up-to-date platform Many applications are moving to computing clouds. Networks have to support this trend Traditional telecom functions will move to computing clouds. This requires developing combined networking and computing solutions Future VPNs will auto-scale with current needs and number of users. Telcos control large amounts of data and communications 3
Evolution Towards Fully Autonomous Networks Planning and optimisation is performed manually through network planning engineers and drive testing. Algorithms for autoconfiguration and selfoptimisation are developed manually, and used to automate the network configuration and optimisation. Algorithms are generated using automated means. Design process is done offline, and resulting algorithm is implemented in the network. The algorithm generation process is now distributed and performed locally and continuously by the network nodes themselves. Nodes now have ability to autonomously specialise their individual behaviour according to environment. 4
cell cell is a small cellular base station, typically designed for use in a home or small business. It connects to the service provider s network via broadband. They offer: - good opportunity for more grained telco configuration and Web application enablement - more precise operational environment, more configurable and more accessible (IP based connection) PSTN GGSN SGSN IP Internet MSC Operator IP Network RNC cell Controller/Gateway Macro-cell Node B Traditional UMTS Architecture cell Small Cell Architecture 5 Legend PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network SGSN Serving GPRS Support Node RNC radio network controller MSC Switching Centre GGSN Gateway GPRS Support Node

Telco Network Use Cases Smart Locations & Contexts - Integrating Telco, Social, Sensor data M2M (a.k.a. IoT) - Signaling traffic will be the main bottleneck - A new network element, the M2M server Content-based Networking - Flow-based networking, traffic-awareness and self-management Call Center Support - Modeling and linking information Customer Information Cloud Operating Systems Content Management Network Security 9
Networked Environment Challenges Handling space and temporal data - devices move frequently and bandwidth requests are unforeseen Handling numeric values - Reasoning over data values is a must (e.g. that s a good PKI because the average of its normal values is in a good range) - powerful data types expression, like native management of UoM and conversions Handling big data - Network data can be huge amount, what happens if when I ve finished to reason data are already changed? Mutability of LD data - e.g. long-lived vs. short-lived triples, updates Reasoning over LD - Not only same as, see also links but also properties, restrictions, complex equivalences Looking for LD data (Semantic File System/Semantic Name System) - Once the information is organized as LD how can I access it? 10
