Office: Phone: Office By Appointment Hours: o Course Prerequisites: P-3 student status o Course Catalog Description: Advanced Healthcare Communications is a non-traditional, skills based course with an emphasis on developing excellence in communication skills through the processes of see one-do one in the areas of healthcare communication including but not limited to patient counseling, patient interviewing, patient education. The course will provide an additional focus on communication in the healthcare environment. o Course Mission: The mission of this course is to help students develop the multiple communication skills necessary to excel in the healthcare environment with particular focus on the ways in which culture, race, gender, education, age, and physical ability interact in the delivery of healthcare. To this end, we will maintain a stimulating, interactive, open, and friendly classroom environment that fosters self and other insight, critical thinking, intellectual growth and communicative competence. Course Delivery o Facilities o Instructional The class is scheduled Monday through Thursday each day 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM at the following locations: Amarillo SOP Pharmacy Building Rm. 107 Abilene SOP Rm Lubbock TTUHSC Rm. 1C102 Dallas SOP Pharmacy SW Rm. 450 Dallas SOP VA Rm. 100
3 . o Textbooks o No Textbooks Required o Recommended o No Recommended textbooks o Teaching methods o The course will use a combination of instructor and student presentations, readings from the primary literature, group completion of case studies, professor-led and student led class discussions, in-class activities, individual at-home assignments, and videotaped presentations. The schedule provides 9 class sessions (38%) which begin with a faculty introduction of the topic followed by a student debate highlighting the session topic. Fifteen sessions (62%) are traditional didactic lectures delivered by course team faculty. o Students are encouraged to discuss questions arising out of lectures, reading materials and student presentations during the class session. Identify game changers for the health care industry and pharmacy practice that are most likely to impact practice within the next decade; justify why a development is likely to be a true game changer. 4 5. Present a compelling, evidence-based argument for or against an emerging digital-based health care communication development or strategy. (T010: A53, A54, A55, A56, A57) 6. Synthesize basic knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences and behavioral sciences when projecting the impact of the digital revolution on the practice of pharmacy and its communication methods. A43 Identify social, cultural and socioeconomic factors relevant to communication A44 Counsel a patient, utilizing appropriate communication format, medical terminology and identified social, cultural and socioeconomic factors A45 Provide recommendation to a healthcare professional or stakeholder utilizing appropriate communication format, medical terminology and identified social, cultural and socioeconomic factors A46 Function as a drug expert on a team working collaboratively to provide interprofessional medical care. A57 Document Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Course Expectations Attendance o The unique delivery of course material through an integration of lecture, student presentations, course assignments/activities, as well as, the lack of traditional pen and paper assessments requires that attendance is mandatory for all course activities. Students seeking prior approval to miss an exam or presentation must notify any of the course facilitators in person or by phone. Voice mail, written notes or will not constitute an excused absence. Work or travel plans do not constitute acceptable reasons for missing course activities. Only EXTREME emergencies will constitute acceptable excuses for missing an exam or presentation. Any make-up exams or presentations to be given will be done so at the convenience of the faculty. Each case will be reviewed on an individual basis. Failure to follow the policies on missed or tardy assignments will result in a grade of zero (0) for that class activity. o Attendance will be taken at random intervals. Unexcused absences will result in assignment of additional course activities at the discretion of the faculty member. Course Grading o Assessment methods Assessment of the understanding and retention of course material will be through a combination of class presentations, telephone employment interview, critique of student CV and portfolio.
6 Curriculum Vitae: Each student is responsible for completing curriculum vitae. The turned in CV are critiqued as an in-class exercise. o Presentation of a patient education topic: Each student choses a disease state and designs a patient education presentation. No two topics may be repeated. The team must approve each students topic by. Student Presentations will be graded by faculty using a provided rubric. o Portfolio: Each student is responsible for assembling a portfolio to include a minimum of a narrative summary, career goals, community service activities and educational activities. o Telephone Employment Interview: Each student participates in a simulation of a telephone employment interview. Student grades are based on their overall responses, energy, and answer to a behavioral question. Students can expect to receive a response to an inquiry within hours during the typical workday. Questions posed late before an assignment may not receive a response from the faculty member in time for the exam.
